    For me, the appeal behind the diesel is I want to run larger tires. Currently on my 07 JKU, I'm getting a combined 13 mpg on 35 inch tires. I have every intention of purchasing a Gladiator Diesel when they become available and I would like to run something in the range of 37 to 40 inch tires. The extra torque and fuel efficiency will definitely be noticeable and a much welcome change from what I have now.
    Midlife crisis is in full swing here, don't judge.

      When TFL truck did their 66mile highway loop at 70mph they got 31.5mpg from a stock diesel wrangler. With 40's you'll probably get 20mpg if you regear the axles.

    • @jlo7770
      @jlo7770 Před 4 lety +3

      I have a ram eco diesel that I run on 35s...
      I get 17mpg highway. It's not gutless but it's nothing like my Cummins were. If you want better power/ fuel economy you're going to have to regear it. Im sure it has more power then that garbage gas motor they have in them now but.. if you run bigger tires expect mpg and power to drastically drop(my buddy had same year stock ram and was getting over 10mpg more)
      I really wanted a jeep gladiator diesel but now... I don't think so. You should also take into consideration like the tdi diesel motors that eco diesel takes a specific type of motor oil not just 5w-40 full synthetic. These eco diesel motors had a ton of motors that had the bottom end let go, they found out later it was because of their specified oil. They later changed it.
      I had mine in at a dealership because at 6k miles it went into limp mode and wouldn't go over 5mph. They told me (this being small Sheridan Wyoming) they were currently replacing a motor and it was the 3rd or 4th that they had replaced that year and it was June.
      With a new "revamped" ecodiesel I'd be highly cautious with buying a first year or even within the first couple years. The first eco diesel was absolutely trash.
      Oh I should also mention the transmission.. my truck running that 8 speed with 35s... at 70mph it won't go into the highest gear it jumps around 6,7,8. It constantly is changing gears messing with the fuel economy, and no that's on flat farm land, going up hills I understand but just flat highway, cruise set it is constantly changing gears.
      My guess is the motor is slightly revamped mainly because jeep has that 30?" Water fording and they had to relocate a bunch of stuff to make the ecodiesel work to keep that number.
      That's the honest truth about the ecodiesel I hope this helps, trust me I love dodge and jeep I wanted that ecodiesel to be something special and it let me down. I know this is long but what he said was right but there's a lot more to these motors then finally a better motor for a jeep.

    I love the negative comments about the ecodiesel being junk when they've never owned one. My 2015 Ram 1500 got 80k miles 60k in the last 2 years no issues, only maintenance and annoying recalls. I work at CDJR store 2 other co workers have around the same mileage on theirs and it the same for them. Do not buy the diesel if you do not have a a 20+ mile one way commute or it will be a headache and do your research on how a modern diesel functions.

      @juanzingarello4005 Před 3 lety +2

      The one in the 1500 which is the same as this one in the Wrangler is an Italian VM Motori engine. VM Motori is FIATs commercial diesel engine manufacturer. These engines have been used in many commercial vehicles in Europe and have been proven engines. Personally, I'm a Cummins guy. Always been a fan of the ISB engines.

    • @whatchis1120

      @@juanzingarello4005 You are correct it is the same vm motori. Yes they are reliable if used properly with any modern diesel, I'm at 95k now still nothing even on the original pads and rotors. You can't go wrong with a Cummins much better on the commercial side of things compared to a ford or chevy. But you still can't treat it as a grocery getter only, there complex also nowadays. But much better with passive regens.

      @@whatchis1120 Fords Power Stroke is a co-developed engine with Navistar. Thats why their engines aren’t great. Navistars popular MaxxForce engines which is the basis of the Power Stroke were notoriously unreliable and unrefined in their operation. They sucked so bad that Navistar themselves started ditching them in favor of ISLs. When it comes to diesels, the best in the business are Cummins and Detroit Diesels. Volvos D13 get an honorable mention though they do have some issues with their regen systems.

    • @whatchis1120
      @whatchis1120 Před 3 lety +5

      @@FrankPapadakis It can do long term harm to the engine if it doesn’t see normal operating temps 200 degrees frequently. It all how the emissions equipment works it’s annoying to say the least. But definitely research how the scr system functions. I do minor errands with mine I just take the long route to get the temps up. If it never sees highway during the week, take it out for 20-30 min on the highway or high mph backroad. The harm is low mpg and clogged dpf which causes too much back pressure on the piston rigs and causes blow by. It’s a lot to deal with so dig into the google, and drive it’s balls off especially. Good engine just needs to be used properly.

  • @XavierStark
    @XavierStark Před 3 lety +4

    I'm not sure why people are calling BS on mpg. I've had my JL Willys Ecodiesel for 6 months now, 7600 miles later, and it's been a joy to drive. I get 28-29mpg average on long drives on the highway, and about 23-24 in the city. That's about +8-9 mpg over my old 2 door JK. Tank sizes are about the same, but my diesel easily goes another 120 miles compared to my old JK. Simple math shows 4 full tanks on the JK is about 50 miles short of what the Diesel goes in 3 full tanks. I do agree that the savings on fuel are almost completely offset by the DEF refillls, fuel filter changes every two years, and the eventual oil change costs (I get the first 2yrs free). This thing does drink DEF, I'm getting about 4250 or so miles per full tank of DEF. I've only fully refilled once and it cost me $40, though some forums say you can get it even cheaper at truck stops.
    As some comments have stated, modern diesels love to go long distances at highway speeds, it'll keep the engine and emissions system happy. Maintenance will always be a thing for any vehicle, gas or diesel. But similar to owning a complex German V8 or a Japanese turbo 4, buy what you can afford, and what you can afford to fix.

    • @XavierStark
      @XavierStark Před 3 lety +2

      Upon a further search, you can find the MOPAR fuel filter for this engine for $50-60 online. Synthetic oil options are available at $50 range. The DIY cost is at about $110. Keep in mind this is every 9000-10000 miles. My old JK needed an oil change every 4000-4500 or so miles, and I payed $55 for synthetic oil and the filter. This find definitely puts you ahead in yearly cost related savings!

    • @XavierStark
      @XavierStark Před 3 lety +4

      Last thought, many people crap on the upcharge of the diesel engine. Most Wranglers sold are auto anyway, and it's my understanding the 8-speed on the diesel is superior. So it's really a $4k upcharge in fair comparison in gas vs. diesel. Within those $4k, you're getting 3.73 gears over the standard (all diesel wranglers bring 3.73), and you're also getting a rear AND front dana 44 axle instead of just the rear which is standard on non-diesels. You got to acknowledge those improvements over gas when talking about spending $4k more.

    The diesel in the wrangler is good, gladiator is where it shines. Dealer sold the diesel gladiator earlier in the morning when I went to test drive. But they did have a shop guy who just traded in a diesel wrangler so I tried that and now I’ve got 8500 miles on my ‘22 diesel gladiator. Buying new, Jeep wave covers first 3 oil changes, I asked if it included diesel, they said yes. So that should get us to 1/3 of break in….assuming that this one holds to the rule of thumb, 100k miles is where diesel shines

    Ive always thought of the Wrangler as the two door descendent of the CJ's, now everything Im seeing has 4 doors. Also historically speaking, jeep was always a rugged bare bones 4X4 utility type vehicle and they should really offer something like that again. A good ole CJ-7 with a 30MPG diesel engine would be really appreciated right now, especially; considering where gas prices are headed for the next 8 years.

    • @BennyTygohome
      @BennyTygohome Před 3 lety

      I think the first gen wranglers (YJ code) were the closest to the CJs. Wranglers had fully boxed frame, unlike the CJ that had U channel frame that weren't nearly as strong as wranglers. YJ also had leaf springs (wider leafs than CJs had too). And the High Output (HO) 4.0 that came out in the 90s. bought my 89 YJ new for $8999+$800 dealer installed AC, wasn't a factory option +$250 folding rear bench seat. It was a 2.5 4cyl with 4.11 ring gears and a i think 2.5:1 tcase and manual 5spd with a very low 1st gear. It did awesome on trails, super light with simple all terrain tires which i think 205-75R15 tires on 15x5.5" stamped steel. i upgraded those to 235-75R15
      2nd gen wranglers (TJ) introduced coil suspension the but retained 4.0 inline six as an option. I had a fully loaded 2004TJ Rubicon new for about $30k i think.
      Prices are crazy now, but they keep getting better and better forv trails. Today they are way more capable trail rigs than CJ but sooo expensive now (base entry wrangler 2dr, after delivery fees is $32k). Some people won't want take them on challenging trails for fear of scratching them. LOL

      Amen on that. This ecodiesel has a history of problems. This is the gen3 version though, and they say they addressed those problems, but its basically the same engine. Not sure the Italians have the expertise that Cummins has with diesels. Now that Jeep is FCA, it stands to reason they would go cheap on the diesel made in their country. And beyond all this, I think the diesel engine is doomed, all diesels. They just pollute too much for a lot of people (government types). I know California wants to ban them and as goes California, so go a lot of other states. Then pretty soon the federal government jumps in.

    I have a 2014 Ram Ecodiesel. The 3.0 diesel is nice. Yes oil changes and fuel filters suck. And rotilla T6 is expensive. But the secret for the do it yourself guy. Wix oil and fuel filters. K&N filters for air. And don't do what they recommended in service manual. Oil filter and oil one change then next do oil plus all of the others. Do oil and air filter one change. Then oil and fuel others. Makes oil changes around $110. And find DEF at the pump. Avoid DEF out of the 2.5 gallon jugs at $20 per jug. When you can fill it up for $17. Just some advice from a personal owner of an Ecodiesel for 72k miles. And he is right about DEF life. Find it at a truck stop or a high use station. Same for the Diesel fuel itself.
