    my dog had separation anxiety, one time we went to pick up my sister from college (2 hours away in total 4 ) we came back and he had broke the door frame, ripped up the couch which are all near the window next to the front door. my parents had gotten really mad that they gave him away. but i had been telling them to take him to get trained. and they said no we can train him at home . but in reality none of us knew how to properly train a dog ( keep in mind my dog is a husky) . and i still get sad because he was my first dog. He and i were very attached and because of that they gave him away behind my back. after school coming home getting ready to walk my dog just to find out he wasnt there anymore. what could’ve been if they had listened to my advice months prior, HE had separation anxiety. i just hope people see this and don’t cheap out on training your dog, it’s worth it!

      Omg, I think that's cruel to get rid of the family dog without telling you. I'm sorry that happened.
      It's too bad the vast majority of people get a dog with good intentions but little real knowledge of what the heck they are doing. Husky can be a difficult breed too. I've made my fair share of mistakes myself.

    My dog definitely has anxiety...broke out of her crate while we were gone and shredded the door to try to get to us. She's super smart, and listens well...mostly the obsessive behavior is while we're gone.

    I think we did a good job with making sure our dobey mix doesn't get separation anxiety. Puzzle toys are awesome. And he loves our fuzzy throw pillows. Taking a long walk or running at the park for an hour before we leave anywhere helps tire him out. A bored dog is a bad dog a tired dog is a calm dog. So good at basic commands. But the fucking leash walking...lol

    Our two dogs were siblings and had separation anxiety with each other. They were always with each other and we didn't put in the time to train them out of it. If I tried to take one alone on a short walk the other one went insane. The one I had was totally fine, excited for the walk. The other would bark enough to hear from two blocks away, would slam themselves into the door, sprint from the side yard where they could see us to the door until there were track and couldn't focus on anything else, not even their favorite treats. Fortunately they were 8 when we had to put one down and so while depressed, our old boy knew it was time.

    My 7month old cocker spaniel is extremely terrified of everything the minute we leave our front door. She starts shaking really intensely and usually will soil herself in fear before we can get downstairs. She won’t let other people or dogs get near her or else she will pee herself.
    She does love the dog park, and plays with the dogs there but still won’t let other people get near her.
    I’ve had friends that see her everyday outside our house and she still won’t go near them but if we are at home she is friendly with everyone.
    I try to take her out 4-5 times a day not only to help relieve her self more often but to also desentize her to her environment. We haven’t made any progress with her when it comes to her fear.

    Anxiety happens but dogs can be desensitized to things. When I leave home the dogs barely lift a muscle. But when my wife leaves they are anxiously awaiting her return. By telling them they are supposed to stay it becomes better. It has improved by having a second dog, the oldest one was much more anxious alone.

    We adopted a dog from a rescue. When our dog gets anxious he shakes uncontrollably, pees, poops and expresses his anal glands. This has nothing to do with separation, we can leave him for hours without issue. He’s afraid of new people- for context- he came out of a meth house and was saved from a cage after SWAT did a no knock on the meth house. He is terrified of sudden groups of people showing up at our house. (Recently had family come for a visit and he was terrified). We’ve been trying to work through some of his insecurities. We’ve found letting him really run his tail off- helps ground him in preparation for training. Which he does well- but all of that goes it the door when people come to our house, for example- like a birthday party/baby shower/BBQ. He’s actually come so far from when he was in a foster for the rescue. My previous dog was actually a service dog- who was very confident and had zero issues with obedience/anxiety/ socializing. I’ve handle this dog with the confidence I did with my service dog and I think that’s really helped build trust with him. He’s learning- it’s been a few months and we’ve come so far with things. I continue to watch training videos to build my training tool box to help me help him be a better boy.

    Many years ago I had a rescue dog a big bad Rottweiler so bad ....
    lol that I could not leave him home alone,
    he took doors off hinges, chewed throughout the house & my window seals,
    Luckily he didn't go through the windows because I did not leave him alone again after witnessing his destruction ,
    He demolished my blinds, chewed the stuffing out of bedding our bedding,
    if I took him at night to work I'd leave him in my car he badly chewed my car,
    He finally escaped from home and got stolen I didn't manage to get him back 😪
    this dog was getting minimal 4 hours of excercise a day.
    Sadly I did not know or have the skills to deal with it, 17 years ago

    My dog literally has separation anxiety, we can leave him alone in the house at all! As soon as we shut the door and he hears the car pull out he starts whining and barking and breaks out of where ever we put him and then he scratched and chews the doors and scratches my carpets that are at my door totally flipping them up and ripping the carpet up! He also pees and poops even if it’s only 10 minutes as he’s been taken out before we left 🤦🏼‍♀️
    He was my mother in-laws dog and he was literally never left alone when she went to appointments we would watch him. So when she passed away we realized how bad it really was!

      I struggle with this, too. The trash truck is an almost daily foe, since Raytown has so many trash companies operating in the same area. Chevy shuts down and cowers in the bathtub. I’ve tried exposing him to the trash trucks for desensitization, but he is extremely fearful. I am hoping to utilize some new tools, soon, to see if I can break through his fear and require engagement during the scary thing. He’s making progress in other areas, but at this rate he will always be an orange dog unless I help him.

    • @theshadow4737
      @theshadow4737 Před 3 lety +2

      @@triciaw8953 how did you try exposing him? If done wrong it makes it worse. The main thing for you is to not react on his fear and fully ignore his behaviour. The moment he snaps out of it, even for an instant, reward him. But under no circumstance try to sooth him, as that enhances his fear.

    • @triciaw8953
      @triciaw8953 Před 3 lety

      @@theshadow4737 I took him outside while the trucks were going up and down my street, and I walked him around the yard. I was using a martingale collar. I probably did try to soothe him, because I didn’t know any better at that time.
      Since then, I’ve been working with him on basics in the backyard with a slip leash and a firm tone. It’s helping with basic obedience, but I’m not getting immediate effects as in the videos. Obviously, I suck at training. I’m hoping to learn better soon.

    • @theshadow4737
      @theshadow4737 Před 3 lety +2

      @@triciaw8953 do not be too harsh on yourself. We have a local dog trainer with the same talent as Tom, if he takes the dog it turn in to a fully obedient dog in seconds. To get the same results it takes us weeks of training. Be consistent inside and outside, let the dog know when he is expected to listen and build on your relationship. When on the Martingale a truck drives by, correct him for cowering instead of showing sympathy. Be counterintuitive at times and focus on rewarding the wanted behaviour while ignoring the unwanted (as long as it does not pose danger).
      After some months I reached the point where our Belgian Sheperds will walk calm besides me while returning from their walk. But while going there they are excited which leaves some work, though my arm muscles enjoy the workout.

If one comes up to us wanting attention, she will run over and try to get attention too. She used to bite at them, but has gotten better. We are pretty for sure she has separation anxiety because if we leave her outside when we are away, then she will ransack out porch. But, if we leave her inside, she is fine. What helped my dog is leaving her alone and coming right back in the room, and over time you extend the amount of time you’re gone so they get used to it. Like to start youd leave her in the room, go out and close the door, and come right back and reward her. Then over time leave her for longer and longer and she learns to trust that you’ll come back and she’s less worried.
      Another important thing is for the dog to build a relationship with other family members, like get your mom/family to take her out for a walk, feed her, play, etc so the dog feels more comfortable when you’re not there.
      She’ll still miss you ofc, but hopefully this helps her adjust a bit better because she knows you’ll come back

      We simply could not find place for a crate so our 2 dogs were raised without. Training started by sit and come command, the rest followed and while we are self critical, the dogs are pretty well behaved (thank to their intelligence in training their monkeys). Treats are a way to introduce behaviour, but never forget that for a dog seeing your positive emotion can replace any treat.
      In the end you should be able to get your dog to do anything without filling it up with food.
