Buying Andrew Camarata's 1st Piece of Equipment ( Purchased from a 3rd party)

  • This was Andrew’s first piece of equipment that he ever purchased. He bought the 1010 johndeere bulldozer in 2009 and then sold it some years after that. He found it in marketplace and sent it to me. I bought it so I can pull logs and do some grading around my house. The guy that I bought the bulldozer off of just put a new motor in it but never told me the steering clutch was bad. Andrew came over to tell some stories and run it.

I rebuilt the clutches on my 420 in 2015 and have had little trouble since. I used all used parts nothing new. The most important thing with these clutches is to adjust the fingers properly on the pressure plate, my guess is Andrew didn't do this the first time and probably why he had issues with the clutches. They are a very good working machine when setup properly. Goodluck with it.

My first money pit was a 500 international with a bad final drive a busted radiator and completely trashed undercarriage. After spending a fortune and every spare moment I found out I had to sale it and move to a 450g then a 650g and now a 650g wide track. The steer clutches in my 1010 track loader work just fine once they busted lose, the brakes not so much, but I still have to get into them to work on them. For the size that it is the 1010 is one of the best little machines I've found, but people try to overwork them, they look larger than they actualy are. An upgrade I'd recommend doing to it is replacing the dash shifter with a floor shifter (It should be bolt in unless I'm mistaken). Something isn't right in that left hand clutch compartment, I don't think the linkages are assembled properly, or maybe it's getting oil into it, but you'd need to pull that side's final drive off to fix it (Yes, you do have to drop the track frame to do it, but I've yet to see a machine where you don't have to do that). Sadly, most of this machine's issues look like they stem from being 'Camarata'd' (Don't get me wrong, I love his channel, but how he runs and works on machines flat out scares me), so good luck and invest in the manuals for it (trust me, they are lifesavers)

Drain it and spray it with plenty brake cleaner. That might get you by for a while. The complete clutch kit is cheap. I have a Mitsubishi BD2 that I changed steering clutch on. I found out the hard way by pulling the track and gear assembly off and didn’t even have to. That clutch pack should come out as an assembly through that same access cover. Find you a clean dry place to work and put the machine on blocks so you can rotate the tracks so you can get to all the bolts. Good thing is you shouldn’t have rusted bolts. That machine is well worth fixing just make sure you change the seal when you got it down

@@Dumpster_Dave No, I meant to say to put it on blocks if you decide you gonna have to end up having to actually change it out. You can fill it up with cleaner just like it is for now. The 1010 was the first to have a option for a direction reverser, that you didn't need to push the cluch in each time.
The older 440s had to have the clutch pushed each time, or the reverser would fail. That's probably the biggest advantage of a 1010 over a 440.
I'm not seeing the blanked off reverse in the main box, so I'd say it doesn't have it.
    .
The 350s have a 2gen power reverser in nearly every one of them, but there still was a base model with a gas engine.
    440s are 2 cyl
    1010 are 4 cyl
    350s are 3 cyl
All 3 where sold as dozer or loader versions.
over the years I've seen a few with backhoes alwayson a loader version, ripper, one with winch on top of ripper, and gearmatic 8# winches hydraulic and non hyd versions. There's also a 9# that they could be possibly upgraded to, it does a better job of not rusting up the brake bands.
    the hydraulic 6 way blade.
And hyd track tightening, over the threaded bolts.

Thanks for replying. Don't worry about what you paid for the dozer. I have a 68 Camaro I restored. And at the time about 22 years ago, and had 13 grand into it. Was probably worth 14. But as time goes on, inflation. Worth 2 to 3X more now. You can't always hit a home run like you did on that tractor and brush hog. Man, am I jealous of you on that deal! If you want a hand one day, let me know. It will give me a little more hands on experience, when I do mine in a few months. I live in northwestern Connecticut. I can pick up some wood pellets from Jessie at Slaters pellets. Over by Hanford supermarket, while I'm in the neighborhood. Either way, it will make for some interesting youtube videos. Once fixed. You'll just have to run it every few months, and the clutches won't stick. Another dangerous way to free those clutches was to run it into a large tree or Boulder. Sometimes the force would be enough to break them apart. I'd never do it because you can get thrown from the seat. On another note. I'll be looking forward to you wrenching on the Nova. I may have some parts and tips for that. I have 3 first gen Camaros. And the Nova is an F body. Lots of parts match up. Take care.
