- In this video I show the different stages required to take apart the control unit for the Garrett AT Pro metal detector.
Also how you can improve the water proof feature by adding glue to the connectors inside where they screw down onto the box. - Zábava
Mate, you are a champion. My AT PRO quit on me and I checked my coil on a friends machine and his coil on mine, determined the fault was in my control unit. I had called about repairs and was looking at $300 for a 10 year old machine (with thousands of hours on it). Being me, I decided to take it apart and see what was going on, it's not like I had anything to lose....the hard part was getting at those two screws, but with your hair-dryer advice I had them out in no time (regular philips head screws). It was as clean as a whistle inside, just pulled the headphone, coil and speaker plugs and gave them a bit of a clean and shazaam!! Back in action baby! Clean and greased the gasket and called it a day. By the way, I love the AT PRO and was not really looking forward to replacing 10 years of experience with those blips, bleeps, grunts, blops and target associations. Thanks again mate, happy detecting. Cheers!!
Thanks Buddy for the awesome tip on taking apart my control box on my AT PRO. In my last vid my detector malfunctioned and i was planning to open up my control box to take a look inside, after watching your vid it made it so easy for me, inspecting the inside i noticed that the connection from the coil wire to the circuit board had a bad connection, now that the connectors are all well connected my detector is now back in action.
Thanks again and good luck to you on your hunting... Aloha! Pat
your welcome Pat, good luck on your next hunt when you get out.
David
I have the A T max, enjoyed watching well interesting, thks for sharing 🤜🏻🤛🏻👍
Thanks man for the video my at gold was acting crazy after a few water hunt and it been out of warranty for 3 years so I decided to take mine apart just fool of water and dirt. Your video helped me out big time cleaning everything and letting it dry out and I think it should work again.
Glad it helped, hope your machine can be saved.
HH
David
Thanks for this help friend
thanks alot, i just did this to 2 of my AT Pros. bring on the water detecting season :)
Thanks,you saved my weekend.
Excellent news
Cool, Awesome tips Thanks. I just got an AT Pro.
you wont be disappointed :)
Good luck with it, learn it well & always use it in pro custom mode.
happy hunting
Brilliant, I was quite surprised when I took mine in the river for the first time because it floated! that's why I think they made the body so large? another thing I did on my old ace was put a bag of silica gel inside :)
Thanks a lot bro! I was wondering if I could come apart because I just got out of the river with my atpro and water got into it somewhere and I just don't know where! So I'm going to tear it apart clean it up
Very brave m8y but it seemed a necesatity wi nuts spinning I enjoyed seeing all the grubbins thanks for that HH ant from Wales
Great video, mate! I was wondering about the coil and headphone sockets and if they would work loose, since it does take a bit of pushing to get the O-rings to seat. I now know what to do if I see any play with them! Cheers!
Pretty interesting. Probably voids your warranty but really cool to see how it looks inside
The warranty has run out on my machine, I would not attempt to take one apart if it is less than 2 years old. I was told it would cost around £75 for someone to look at it and having taken it apart I am glad I did it myself.
Thanks for watching
David
Torx screws on circuit board removal has as shown little stems within the screw. Will a regular torx of size do it or does it have to be a special one because of the security screw? Thanks.
Hi, The screws have a tamper proof nipple sticking up in the middle so you need to use a T10 think. you will see a hole in the middle or the torx bit so if it has no hole in the centre it will not work
Thank you.
@@artloewen Mine had regular phillips head screws (they did have the orange seal too)
Not been detecting for a while so I decided to be brave & take my machine apart for the first time with no instructions :-/
Hope it helps someone out there
Makes you wonder when spending all that money that your not getting what you paid for especially when you can see dust and sand under the water tight unit that sounds major concerns for me! GL & HH
+The Solo Searcher good evening your own block garrett at pro
It is inwards when normal.
@@fabiorodela422 just be sure to blow pressured air carefully in all the little places to fully dry it out with no chance of corrosion creeping in, I would leave it open in a dry warm room for a few days before putting it all back together ;-)
Mine died after I left it sit for the winter and replaced the batteries but no joy. It doesn't do anything - anything you can think of to fix this before sending it into Garrett? Any fuses or relays I can check?
You could check the cables coming from the battery compartment to the board have not popped off due to dry solder. Also try turning it on with the headphones and coil disconnected.
@@solosearcher Thanks I'll give those a shot!
hi going back over your old videos love em got a garrettat pro myself any tips on the best recharg batterys thanks mate
Hi Alan sorry only just seen this comment.
2100 eneloop batteries are what you want. Last for years and years and you can detect all day long on a charge and still have half power left.
@John Burgess oh how much are they?
@The Solo Searcher, in the States around $80 US 2 years ago.
I have a broken gold AT with a 3-pin component, similar to a smd burned transistor, this one is located next to the battery power connector, it is just the first component through which electricity passes, I think it can be a diode or Zener diode but I do not have the reference to being burned
Probably a bit late, but that would likely be a either a transistor or a voltage regulator, and likely a very common item. A bit tedious to replace a tiny smd component, but completely possible with a low temp soldering iron and a steady hand.
Thank you for this video. I had a small amount of water trapped between the plastic sticker covering the screen and the waterproof casing. Now I know water is not in the machine. Thank you
Glad it helped
Many thanks for your upload one of my AT Pro's goes out of balance after using for about 20-30 minutes use. it won't automatically balance so I have to balance it manually. Do yo have any ideas? I'm is Perth Australia so it's rather costly posting from the most isolated city in the world.
By the way, are you sure you want to use a glue gun on yours, the glue runs quite easily when the unit gets hot in the summer. I glued up my trash and treasure bag using a hot glue gun and it started to run down the bag. Maybe you don't get the summer heat we experience in Oz. can you get back to me if you have the time. Many thanks. Chris.
I'm not sure why it would do that unless the coil is letting in water? Also some types of batteries effect the machine I have found in the past, I use NIMH batteries 2400. And the glue never melts here btw.
I would like to replace the top part of my at pro international because it is damaged, would that be sold as a spare part?
The top part being the screen with all the electronics?
@@solosearcher no Just the transparant lid
I think you can only buy the whole case which would include the lid. That costs around £150. You could email Garrett and see if they will sell you just the lid but I dont think it will be an easy task. Regtons.com sell the AT PRO case enclosure but do speak to them just to check it comes with the lid if you do buy it as the description and picture is not clear.
Hi, I'm looking for the electronic diagram of Garrett At, do you know where I can find it?
Antonio Cano No sorry, I'm 99% convinced that information has not made it to the Internet yet but if you open up the machine and reverse engineer the circuit board you might just be the 1st person to get the information you require ;-) unless you know someone that has access to Garrett's Test & Develope department?
If Garrett was thinking they would have used 18650 Li-ion batteries and put a decent removable faceplate (ie: not glued!) and regular screws. Once purchased it's MY DECTECTOR and should I wish to work on it, it shouldn't be a nuisance. For the cost you would expect much better build / design quality.
I think the battery could of been better but I guess they were trying to keep it simple for the mass market. there are certain build aspects I would of changed to make it more water resistant but over all it is still my go to machine and I can't see myself changing it unless they bring out a new AT Pro. who wants to go Detecting with a bag or cover over there £1,200 metal detector just incase it rains ay? lol not me
The Solo Searcher I agree - it's a good detector overall.
Have you put the AT pro in water before you made the video? If not good thing you opened it before.
hi, no I had only used the machine in the rain but since this video I have used it in a river with no problems.
Hey I know you probably won't respond in time but my grandmas friend has one and we are trying to fix it but it just won't turn off
Did it get wet? I would try taking the batteries out and leaving it for a while then disconnect the coil and headphones
got told today the repair of my AT Pro is not possible, after 1 year 2 pins from connector broke off and are still sticking in the box connection. How can this be that a 10 Dollar cennection is not able to be repaired? This was my last garret! Has anyone instructions how to fix the coil to box connection?
I had the same problem. I took mine apart and sealed around the headphone connector and the coil connector with a very small amount of 100% silicone. From my experience hot glue will not stay water tight for very long. Also there is a copper sticker on the inside wall of the unit that became detached. Giving me false signals I'm guessing the sticker is some kind of anti static ground. I also used silicone grease around the gasket . the same stuff that the factory uses. I hate to say this but the AT Pro is a total piece of junk... the first day I had it a cam locks cracked.. a couple of months later Mike coil failed.. it would give faults signals when I bumped up against small branches and I could shake the unit in the air and it would sound off... also the arm cuff broke. I know many people with the unit that had the whole head break off do to the small screws that it's Mountain on with. Also the little plastic pieces that connect the coil to the shaft tend to break very easily... I made a special bracket to hold the main unit on to the shaft. Garrett was pretty good about replacing everything for free. then I noticed air bubbles coming out of the main unit.. so it was not water tight. So many problems with this unit. I know this may sound kind of harsh but Garrett needs to fire there design engineer team.. they also need to use better materials. I have fixed everything myself.. because Garrett is clearly not capable. They will just send you another unit that will definitely fail in one way or another. The machine has been very good to me the electronics are absolutely fantastic put all the hardware is absolute garbage.. this is not my opinion this is a 100% fact... and the new max is basically the same thing. I will never buy a Garrett machine ever again. you would just be purchasing a disappointment
I have to agree that the design engineer obviously had no real experience with plastics which require much more thought to the ergonomics and I doubt very much the testing of the prototype was put on a robot arm and swung left and right for 28,000 times per 8 hour hunt for an average of 52 days to see if it would last a year of only being used once a week "Total of 1 million 456 swings" basic maths lol.
If they just spent some money & time on fixing all these problems they could have a machine which is without question the best All round machine out there but they won't so it's Upto us minions to improve it and do as best we can with it.
Thanks for watching & commenting
Wow you need to take better care of your machine. I've been using an AT Pro for 3 years and never broken any of that stuff. The cam locks don'e need to be that tight! How in the world would you break an arm cuff!? Sit on it? Of course it falses if you bump coil, all machines do. AT Pro is a nice machine, however I wish pro mode had adjustable audio for depth. Pro mode is great but makes it hard to find deep targets.

Hi Tom I have a 400i I'm new to detecting. I today purchase a Nell storm coil for my 400i. Would you say I have a good set up for a first timer. Do you no if there is much diffrance between 400i to the AT pro or am I fine to carry on with my 400i regards Ian
I've had mine for 10 years (thousands of detecting hours on it) and hardly baby it, put it away dirty, chuck it in the back of the vehicle. Just had my first problem, an oxidized plug connection on the inside of the control unit...a little cleaning and it's back in action.
Lucky you, I used it under water river detecting once and it didn't do very well which was why I looked inside. I'm sure your machine has paid for itself and I do love the machine it's consistent with good results as I've found 5 Celtic gold coins 3 Saxon coins gold treasure and many more amazing finds with it
I believe the reason the case is so large is for buoyancy as the AT Pro floats when you let go of it in the water. If I take mine apart (likely) for a cleaning and seal service I may just cut away the faceplate where the screws are as this is something that should be done annually (as you said). I would also put a thin film of silicone grease on all the seals. I can never figure out why companies cover access screws unless it is to get people to send it in so they can make more $ ;) Anywhere a screw or seal goes from the inside to the outside should get some silicone grease (a very light coating). I am attempting to get a new faceplate from my Garrett dealer and if I can will likely use a paper hole punch to clear the screw hole areas. If not, use some spray adhesive like 3M 77 to replace the existing faceplate after I punch the holes. I don't mind the more mechanical look if it means I can service it.
Yes I think you are correct.
my control unit snapped off the upper shaft the other week so I'm sure I will be doing a video on "How to re fix a Garrett AT Pro control unit to the Shaft after it Snaps off"
:-/
The Solo Searcher Or you could get an Anderson straight shaft and it mounts the control unit via the 4 speaker screws. I've also heard someone say that you can use longer screws (the ones that broke on yours and many others) and it is less likely to break. For the money these should be better built.
yes I was thinking of making my Own face cover design for the AT Pro with screw holes to go on top. I guess paying to print out a custom one wouldn't be cheap but it would look amazing with my logo on it ;-)
The Solo Searcher You can order new faceplates from Garrett - My dealer is sending me one free (good people). I asked how much they are if I should need more and was told $6 Cdn so they are not expensive to replace.
+Digger D can you order a new empty control box ?? that's what I'm really after
If the control panel is conceived from inside and published, we can make it
When you see inside the at pro you are really glad you bought a minelab 😂
why whats inside your minelab?a little fantasy world thats going to find you so much more because you spent another thousand quid on it ?Doubt it...:)
I bet you don't even own a Minelab! Go back to filming potholes on the streets you baffoon!! 😁😁
Don't open the minelab the rainbows and unicorns will escape!! Just kidding mate, they make excellent machines.
If I may offer a suggestion... If anybody does open their machine in this manner, before you close it up, put a couple small packets of desiccant inside. This will ensure that it stays dry inside, should any small amount of moisture get inside.
good idea, I also would recommend you do not over tighten the control box to the shaft with the horrible self tapping screws that eat into the plastic. this causes the screw pillars to weaken and eventually snap clean off the control unit.. you live and learn
I got water in mine today. They are NOT WATERPROOF!!!! Where those nuts are is exactly where water got into mine.
Hi
hi
How to void a warranty.
Luke Rankin the machine was out of warranty when I did this, I would not recommend doing this if your machine is less than 3 years old. also I have a HNC in electronic engineering which helps. thanks for watching
David
This guy drags on and babbles too much! Annoying! Get to the points mate!
I will work on my babbling but not so sure about the dragging on ;-)
You have show when you.re taking off.each parts .you dont teach no thing
The video is called "Taking apart the Garrett AT pro" the hint is in the title! I have another video showing more about taking it apart. I show everything you need to know about " taking it apart" and btw I don't get paid to do any videos they are just for fun so don't be so rude and quick to criticize when you do less than me it's disrespectful
