  • In this video I show the different stages required to take apart the control unit for the Garrett AT Pro metal detector.
    Also how you can improve the water proof feature by adding glue to the connectors inside where they screw down onto the box.

    Mate, you are a champion. My AT PRO quit on me and I checked my coil on a friends machine and his coil on mine, determined the fault was in my control unit. I had called about repairs and was looking at $300 for a 10 year old machine (with thousands of hours on it). Being me, I decided to take it apart and see what was going on, it's not like I had anything to lose....the hard part was getting at those two screws, but with your hair-dryer advice I had them out in no time (regular philips head screws). It was as clean as a whistle inside, just pulled the headphone, coil and speaker plugs and gave them a bit of a clean and shazaam!! Back in action baby! Clean and greased the gasket and called it a day. By the way, I love the AT PRO and was not really looking forward to replacing 10 years of experience with those blips, bleeps, grunts, blops and target associations. Thanks again mate, happy detecting. Cheers!!

    Thanks Buddy for the awesome tip on taking apart my control box on my AT PRO. In my last vid my detector malfunctioned and i was planning to open up my control box to take a look inside, after watching your vid it made it so easy for me, inspecting the inside i noticed that the connection from the coil wire to the circuit board had a bad connection, now that the connectors are all well connected my detector is now back in action.

    I have a broken gold AT with a 3-pin component, similar to a smd burned transistor, this one is located next to the battery power connector, it is just the first component through which electricity passes, I think it can be a diode or Zener diode but I do not have the reference to being burned

    • @bryantaylor5612
      @bryantaylor5612 Před rokem

      Probably a bit late, but that would likely be a either a transistor or a voltage regulator, and likely a very common item. A bit tedious to replace a tiny smd component, but completely possible with a low temp soldering iron and a steady hand.

    By the way, are you sure you want to use a glue gun on yours, the glue runs quite easily when the unit gets hot in the summer. I glued up my trash and treasure bag using a hot glue gun and it started to run down the bag. Maybe you don't get the summer heat we experience in Oz. can you get back to me if you have the time. Many thanks. Chris.

    If Garrett was thinking they would have used 18650 Li-ion batteries and put a decent removable faceplate (ie: not glued!) and regular screws. Once purchased it's MY DECTECTOR and should I wish to work on it, it shouldn't be a nuisance. For the cost you would expect much better build / design quality.

      @solosearcher  Před 8 lety

  • @wiki1979able
    @wiki1979able Před 6 lety +1

    I had the same problem. I took mine apart and sealed around the headphone connector and the coil connector with a very small amount of 100% silicone. From my experience hot glue will not stay water tight for very long. Also there is a copper sticker on the inside wall of the unit that became detached. Giving me false signals I'm guessing the sticker is some kind of anti static ground. I also used silicone grease around the gasket . the same stuff that the factory uses. I hate to say this but the AT Pro is a total piece of junk... the first day I had it a cam locks cracked.. a couple of months later Mike coil failed.. it would give faults signals when I bumped up against small branches and I could shake the unit in the air and it would sound off... also the arm cuff broke. I know many people with the unit that had the whole head break off do to the small screws that it's Mountain on with. Also the little plastic pieces that connect the coil to the shaft tend to break very easily... I made a special bracket to hold the main unit on to the shaft. Garrett was pretty good about replacing everything for free. then I noticed air bubbles coming out of the main unit.. so it was not water tight. So many problems with this unit. I know this may sound kind of harsh but Garrett needs to fire there design engineer team.. they also need to use better materials. I have fixed everything myself.. because Garrett is clearly not capable. They will just send you another unit that will definitely fail in one way or another. The machine has been very good to me the electronics are absolutely fantastic put all the hardware is absolute garbage.. this is not my opinion this is a 100% fact... and the new max is basically the same thing. I will never buy a Garrett machine ever again. you would just be purchasing a disappointment

    • @solosearcher
      @solosearcher  Před 6 lety

      I have to agree that the design engineer obviously had no real experience with plastics which require much more thought to the ergonomics and I doubt very much the testing of the prototype was put on a robot arm and swung left and right for 28,000 times per 8 hour hunt for an average of 52 days to see if it would last a year of only being used once a week "Total of 1 million 456 swings" basic maths lol.
      If they just spent some money & time on fixing all these problems they could have a machine which is without question the best All round machine out there but they won't so it's Upto us minions to improve it and do as best we can with it.

      Wow you need to take better care of your machine. I've been using an AT Pro for 3 years and never broken any of that stuff. The cam locks don'e need to be that tight! How in the world would you break an arm cuff!? Sit on it? Of course it falses if you bump coil, all machines do. AT Pro is a nice machine, however I wish pro mode had adjustable audio for depth. Pro mode is great but makes it hard to find deep targets.

  • @DeeegerD
    @DeeegerD Před 7 lety +1

    I believe the reason the case is so large is for buoyancy as the AT Pro floats when you let go of it in the water. If I take mine apart (likely) for a cleaning and seal service I may just cut away the faceplate where the screws are as this is something that should be done annually (as you said). I would also put a thin film of silicone grease on all the seals. I can never figure out why companies cover access screws unless it is to get people to send it in so they can make more $ ;) Anywhere a screw or seal goes from the inside to the outside should get some silicone grease (a very light coating). I am attempting to get a new faceplate from my Garrett dealer and if I can will likely use a paper hole punch to clear the screw hole areas. If not, use some spray adhesive like 3M 77 to replace the existing faceplate after I punch the holes. I don't mind the more mechanical look if it means I can service it.

      The Solo Searcher Or you could get an Anderson straight shaft and it mounts the control unit via the 4 speaker screws. I've also heard someone say that you can use longer screws (the ones that broke on yours and many others) and it is less likely to break. For the money these should be better built.
