I had a FWD ‘06 Five Hundred with a CVT and it was tremendously solid. You could tell it was designed with fleet use in mind - everything was high capacity from the washer fluid to the engine oil. It had a good serviceable design and it was very comfortable to daily drive. I took a center punch from a Saturn to the driver’s door and wasn’t injured at all and had it repaired. I eventually sold it a few years later with 160k miles and it still had the original shocks, struts, tie rod ends and ball joints which is a miracle in western PA.

I currently drive a 2005 Ford 500 with CVT and AWD 129,000 miles. Bought it at 105,000 and it's no speed demon, but never considered it slow for a full sized sedan, especially for a 6 cyl. I have taken this car several times over the passes of the Sierra Mountains into Northern California from Nevada. I can pass multiple cars, going from 60 to 95 in short order when opportunity presents. It is also an extremely nimble car for its size, and an extremely comfy car to drive.

If I remember correctly, one of the features of the 500 was its height. They were very easy to get in and out of. Perhaps Ford was trying to sell this as a replacement for folks who were trading in their old Crown Vics.
In New York City in the 80s and 90s, the Crown Vic was a great car to have, because it shared the drivetrain with the Lincoln Town Car. The Town Car was the number one private transportation vehicle in Manhattan. They were called “black cars“. In Brooklyn and Queens, there were 1 million repairs shops that specialized in Town Car repairs, so by default they were a million parts available for both models.

I personally own an 07 Ford Five Hundred with 200k with the Aisin 6 speed transmission & I think it’s a great transmission. Many people were fooled into believing the transmissions were terrible when in all reality... it’s a THROTTLE BODY issue. Keep the throttle body cleaned out every 30k miles or so & reset the computer & boom! it will run, drive, & most importantly, shift like a brand new car.

The thing is an absolute TANK in the snow, we live in the PNW and can get pretty heavy winters, that car has never gotten stuck (Never had snow tires only all seasons) With the AWD and the traction control it hardly even slides, hands down one of the most capable sedans I've seen. I've had my 2007 500 (FWD) for about four years, and while a lot broke down over time it was only because everything inside it was the same parts as when the previous owners bought it in 2006. Amazing the car lasted until 2019 without any parts changed. Currently at 277,755 miles and still going strong! Comfortable, versatile, and it can get up and go when you need it to. It ain't a Supra, but it sure as Hell ain't no Prius
Edit: before anyone says "they lied to you", I had some shops check it out. They found date marks on the engine, belt, battery, AC compressor and a few other parts that were inspected and confirmed legit. All mentioned but the engine have been replaced in the past year when they finally gave out (or in the compressor's case, exploded)

She kept going strong for about a month, but after her brakeline ruptured and some other damage, I had to replace her with a 2013 Dodge Charger Pursuit. I went to start her up yesterday to make sure she was still kicking; won't even crank. The battery's probably dead. That's $250+ on top of $3,000+ to fix the body, headlight and windshield damage, plus the brakeline, plus the steering stuff and God knows what else-I'd spend less money just buying another Five Hundred.

Personally I think this is an amazing car. I love my 2005 five hundred and it has the 6 speed automatic. 186,000 miles and never had a problem with anything on this car. I even pull a 4'x8' trailer with it. I do change the fluid in the transmission every 30,000 miles. My mother bought the car new and when she died I took the car over. With good maintenance these cars are amazing. The guy that made this video is right about the ride of it. It is very comfortable and the 6 speed automatic cars are pretty quick. I plan on keeping this one for a long time!

Definitely. Mine is spectacular and just really practical and perfect in a lotta ways. I’ve been through a lot of used cars and Fords tend to be pretty damn tough and have longevity. Not all of them but all the ones I had.
