      Scotty 1st love your work. So I have one problem with your information. Putting a Prius or any true Hybrid Vehicle in Neutral is a bad idea. Putting a car in Neutral while a Prius is on, is a good way to drain the battery, please remember that the Prius uses the Transmission to charge the battery, if you put a Prius in Neutral that means the car has no way to charge the battery.

    You're the first person I've heard suggesting using N and foot lightly on the brake when stopped at intersections or any other situation where idling is necessary. I've done this for many years and the few times I've suggested it to others (in very hot conditions especially), they think it's just one of my quirks. It's not a quirk. It makes sense. Being gentle to mechanical systems pays off in longevity and dependability.

    • @robertmaybeth3434
      @robertmaybeth3434 Před 3 lety +2

      Dropping the trans in N too many times is not good for it, if I wouldn't put in park then don't put in neutral either. Excessive shifting is not doing it any good. Excess idling he said is "5 minutes " that much I believe. Any less than that, I leave my shifter be.

    • @mikestirewalt5193
      @mikestirewalt5193 Před 3 lety +2

      @@robertmaybeth3434 Well thanks, but it's a habit now and the engine sighs with relief on a hot day with the air conditioner going full blast and it's 115 degrees. Putting it in Neutral unloads the transmission/torque converter and lets the engine not have to work so hard.
      This is the third car I've had that I've done this with over the years, a Cadillac and another Olds 98 (I'm on my second one, a '95) and who knows if I'm doing any good or harm. I just do it to be nicer to the engine, especially on a hot day. Lessens the load. Thanks for your comment though.

    • @robertmaybeth3434
      @robertmaybeth3434 Před 3 lety +2

      One time I had a discussion with another mechanic who i felt knew cars pretty well, too, and we talked about putting in "N" at stop lights. All he said was "WHY"? I realized he was right. Anything 5 minutes or less you might as well leave in drive. Shifting wears the parts more than any possible benefits. If you are idle more then 5 minutes oy u might as well shut it off.

    • @mikestirewalt5193
      @mikestirewalt5193 Před 3 lety +1

      @@robertmaybeth3434 "Why?" the mechanic asks? To relieve stress, for one thing. Stress creates heat. If it's 120 F outside like it's been lately in the Western USA, relieving the stress between the engine and torque converter and brakes lets the engine breathe easier and faster, air conditioner puts out more cold air. It depends on the length of the stop. If it's a fast light I'm less likely to do this. Also outside temp is a factor. It's a variable, not a hard and fast rule.

    • @robertmaybeth3434
      @robertmaybeth3434 Před 3 lety

      @@mikestirewalt5193 Yes I get the concept, but the real question here is: when you shift out of gear, are you creating more wear and tear than you might be saving? Everytime you disengage/engage the trans there is inevitably slight wear, you even feel it happening. So I submit, is it worth it ultimately? The trans is still spinning, there's still heat being generated - but all you've done by shifting it into N is added more wear to the shifter assembly. The ATF's enemy is heat, You can't cool the transmission fluid down by shifting it out of gear alone, it has no effect. There is only one thing that cools the trans, and that is airflow through the radiator (which usually has an ATF fluid cooler built in, or at least attached). Heat is primarily what degrades the ATF fluid, the only way to reduce excess wear from heat is, maintaining the airflow through the radiator whenever possible, and changing the ATF every 30,000 miles or so.
      If y ou really want a tip to help baby the trans, it is this. When i park, first i put the trans in N. Then engage the parking brake. Only then do i put it in park and shut down. This little step, plus changing the ATF, eliminates much wear inside the trans. (I've owned 15 cars, 12 with auto trans, and never worn out a trans yet.)

      @Island Mike Yes it is but the vast majority of people where I am in the UK people who drive automatics beat the heck out of them all the time doing stupid things like going from drive to reverse whilst moving and vice versa and putting it in park whilst the vehicle is still moving and failing to apply the parking brake, they always leave it in drive whilst at a traffic light too. The worst thing they do though is never change the transmission fluid I only one person who ever changed automatic transmission fluid and it is the only automatic car I've ever seen achieve over 250,000 miles in the UK. Leaving a manual in gear whilst stopped for long periods of time is also bad for the throwout bearing and the premature wear can cause to break before you need a new clutch causing you to have to buy a whole new clutch kit. At least with most people driving manuals in the UK they are a bit smarter with them and don't abuse them.

  • @Tuberesu
    @Tuberesu Před 2 měsíci

    In the UK we have a law which forbids allowing an engine to idle. "The law states that is an offence to idle your engine unnecessarily when stationary. If you fail to turn your engine off after being spoken to you may be issued with a fixed penalty notice." (Vehicle Emissions) (Fixed Penalty England Regulations 2002.). the worst offenders are truck drivers who, probably because they don't pay for the fuel, couldn't care less. Apart from environmental reasons, everything you have said in this video makes good sense, thanks for putting your thoughts into words. It might have taken four years but things are beginning to improve!

      @@danr4316 it's not quite out of touch. all material things have lifespans. they fatigue and they eventually fail. and when you put them through more and more loading cycles of unnecessary thermal/mechanical/whatever stresses, they fatigue and fail a little bit sooner. that's just a physical reality, and automotive engineers/designers/project leads are paid to figure out what's a practical and cost-effective target lifespan to achieve for any given component or system.
      from what i've seen in industry, interest in how your engine handles long periods of idling is mostly academic or from an emissions concern standpoint. automotive OEMs don't give a crap about how much you overly abuse your car b/c they've already designed and okayed their vehicles to meet their own specific test requirements, left a manual full of warranty limitations and recommended do's/don'ts for you (which originate from their design intent), and couldn't possibly design an indestructible fuel-efficient engine that can idle forever - even if they wanted to.

    I really like this video, It is very informative. I had no idea about cars starting fires when running and parked, until I saw an episode of the Sopranos and AJ's vehicle caught fire, it was parked on dry leaves. As a side note on Heat Shields, many years ago I bought a Pre-Certified two year old Honda Accord from a dealer (and paid for a 3 year warranty). About 3 months after purchasing I took the car into the dealer in for an oil change. They tried to sell me a new heat shield for $150 because they said it was "rusty". I declined the offer to change the shield since the vehicle was still new. The car is 20 years old now and the original heat shield finally fell off. When I called the same dealer they wanted to charge me $350 for a replacement heat shield (its just just a basic metal cover that probably cost $20 for the dealer to purchase and 15 minutes at most for them to install it, so the price they charge is outrageous).

  • @WaddlesTheDuck
    @WaddlesTheDuck Před 3 lety

    Scotty, you should start this video with a disclaimer. Something like, "It depends on where you live and the time of year ".
    I live in the Pacific Northwest. In the winter I let my cars idle when starting them in the morning or when the water temperature engages the automatic choke. This allows oil to get through the engine before driving it and putting more strain on the engine. Remember, heat kills engines, so do oil-free cylinders and things that need to have that lubrication to combat heat. So warming the engine until the automatic choke disengaged and the car is running at normal idle reduces the strain on a car.
    I do the same in the summer, and yes we do get 100+ degree days. We actually have 4 seasons, each about 3 months long. Allowing oil to actually lubricate the engine in the summer before putting a strain on the engine is vitally important.
    I have a 2000 Chevrolet Silverado1500 4x4 Z71 with over 270K miles on it. I have driven it to Texas and back, over the Rockies through the middle of the night, and in one day gone from 80+ degrees tonsuv zero. If my engine had the additional wear on it from not warming it in the morning I know that Vortec engine would be dead. It runs smoother than a BMW X5 (I know because a friend has a 2-year old X5 and we were talking... her engine was louder than mine and she made note of it... you couldn't hear mine).
    Disclaimer please, no generalities.

    I was in a snow blizzard (not a snow storm, an actual blizzard) a few years ago all night on the Derbyshire Cheshire boarder in England UK. Snow ploughs were going past every hour to keep the road clear of snow.
    I ran the engine all night. Just revved up once an hour or so just to blow the carbon off the plugs. It was fine. When we made our way down to Buxton the next day we noticed that the police had closed the road during the night that we had stayed on.
    Wild wind and snow white out. Loved it.

The problem turned out to be the TIPM (Chrysler cars really are the worst).. But I got used to putting my car in neutral at red lights and stuff even after I got the car fixed. Putting the car in neutral seemed to take some stress off of the car while waiting at red lights.

Also, there has never been any major problem with it. I had no idea it would last so long when I bought but I will keep on driving it as long as it works perfectly. I wish new cars were built like that!
