    From both you I have learned:
    -The process of how to get an identity established
    -Paying as close details as possible to details
    -The power of collaboration with other skilled artists
    -Use whatever tool to achieve your idea
    -Most importantly is the power of reduction between thoughts and delivering them.

    Question : How do you approach a client with crappy logo and tell them their logo could youse a makeover? Do you think it will be offensive and they would not want to talk to you or hear from you ever again? Do you tell them what great benefits and other things a new logo could bring for the company? I'd like to watch an episode on that subject. Thanks!

      I dont think its ethical to do that, unless you are directly asked for your opinion. A good designer does not need to be knocking on other peoples doors asking to redesign a logo.

    • @el_teodoro
      @el_teodoro Pƙed 4 lety +4

      @@kekoski Wow what a bad mindset. As a designer, I love to redesign the logo if the logo is bad since I can somewhat understand what the person tries to communicate through the logo and do it better. and you as a good designer know why it is bad so it is professional criticism, people pay thousands of dollars for that. And why hold back your opinion and not help that person? Because you're afraid to hurt him/her feelings?

    I've really taken to this method of design. There have been times when I've started by trying to think up really creative ideas for a logo only to drive myself crazy.
    Now I start by creating a mood board for the brand. This gives me the vibe I need to create the right logo. It's surprising how often a simple text logo with a little tweak goes well with a brand.

    I always take something away from you guys. As a Production Designer I have a process that looks a lot alike this, bigger moodboards and a lot more concepting, but getting those words together in the beginning is KEY to all else, I call it the PREMISE though, and instead of asking the client, you can analyse the premise straight out of the script. Cool as always, I totally agree with Chris, the more analytical and precise you can get with the client, the better and more surprises.

    Enjoying this video. Chris's process of creating the logo is similar to the way I learned to do it. One story handed to me over 12 years ago. Colorado State University had (has) a great design department, one of the instructors was a well known designer and for his posters. He had people working for him too. One day he was looking at his designers (about 8 of them) doing their thing, got very frustrated. Walked to each station unplugging the computers and told them to design. I love my growing collection of sketch pads, 20+ years in the making. Love the computer too, but never for designing the concepts or developing the direction. Great job. No takeaways except validation, however I will add that I do go back and find some sketches that inspire personal and self-promotional ideas.

      Thank you for the story, I completely agree with sketching. I'm a self taught graphic designer and developed all designs solely on the computer for years. A partner and I are building our first design firm and I had to learn the basics....Never to begin the design process on a computer. I found a new appreciation for The pencil and pad. It allows a direct current of creativity to flow and encourages raw imagination. the video is good too!

    I had to pause this video and smile at the Bible reference. I'm learning design and am also a Christian who used to lead youth ministry, so I've experienced looking up logos (as in logomark) and logos (as in the Greek word) and getting the opposite result. But there's a definite connection there, and it just makes you think about the power of logos and branding in general.

      @@thefutur that's incredibly sweet of you Chris to acknowledge his contributions even though you two might disagree with some things here and there. I absolutely hate it when graphic designers pretend they can 'brand' when they know nothing about marketing. They lie to their customers, not with ill-intent but because they don't understand it themselves. Visual communication is just ONE aspect of branding, and it doesn't get actualised until a much later stage of the branding process.

      The Skool Network You are doing good work and this was a good video. You guys were pretty spot on and it's rare to find such good material when the word is so overused in irrelevant ways. Please do take the time to read the below as although I agree with what you have provided in the video, as this video only addresses great tips on visually communicating through graphic design. It's a great design process nonetheless and here we go;
      I would add certain marketing methodologies, understanding of consumer psychology and sociology into the mix which could lead us to a more comprehensive approach if more of us who are in the industry are willing to innovate and add value to the customers. Most successful branding efforts have been known to produce a cultural shift/statement, which is worth being studied and possibly applied.
      There is a qualitative and quantitative aspect to branding, simply put, the art and science of Branding. It's not just about what the client would like their brand direction to be, but what is most relevant to their customers, their industry and pretty much the whole business environment. At the end of the day it's not just about looking good, its not just about communicating value, It's also about staying relevant. So it would make sense to quantify how successful our branding efforts are through tracking and monitoring post implementation instead of giving the client empty hopes. There is no such thing as beginning a branding campaign without insights. That's an utter waste of money and time, as we won't even be sure if a Brand/rebrand investment is necessary and if it is, in what direction should we steer public brand perception.
      Providing BRANDING services is different from providing Graphic design, Visual communication or anything else within related fields and in most cases is an amalgamation of all of it. Most graphic designers claim to do 'branding' where I am from, just because it sounds good and helps them get more projects in. Which they are essentially poisoning the well for actual Brand consultants or Branding consultancies/agencies by misdirecting the public and diluting the term.
      In summary, people who claim to provide branding services have the responsibility to offer just that. Nothing less, from information to strategy formulation to development to implementation and back to information.

    • @bebeurie6822
      @bebeurie6822 Pƙed 6 lety +2

      Well in the same breath - branding ‘specialists’ are also missing a hugely integral part of the process too. The artistic vision, and intuitive process that can only be seen through the eyes of an experienced artist. Branding begins with the company figuring our its market, and then bringing that information to the branding creator. It is not solely the responsibility of the brander/designer to deal with all the other aspects, they are simply there to use their skills to compile aesthetically pleasing content that fits in with the company’s mission, target audience etc. In no way do I disagree with you in the sense that design isn’t the only aspect, however it is a hugely important part of it. If it wasn’t, then graphic content such as logos and trademarks would not be considered integral either.

      The Ole's logo took about 3 days of sketching. I can post those "failed" attempts if you'd like. What I realized is that as a designer, we tend to try to create something without studying what has come before. Once I started tracing over other marks that were similar, I started getting a feel for the letterforms and spacing. After which it only took 3 sketches before I was ready to get sign off from my client and hand off to an expert letterform designer Oban Jones .

    • @StephenLee529
      @StephenLee529 Pƙed 9 lety +1

      Yes...! Your point about studying is so true. And, you end up getting frustrated and you waste valuable time and effort by NOT doing it this way.
