- Guitar lovers can be quite outspoken. Sometimes we say controversial things, things that the manufacturers might take issue with. But this is America, right? It was this morning...
So we have here an Epiphone 1961 Les Paul SG Standard Reissue. It sports a 2-piece solid mahogany body, one-piece mahogany neck, CTS pots, Mallory caps, Switchcraft jacks/switches, and GIBSON BURSTBUCKER PICKUPS! Yes, American Gibson Burstbucker pickups - the favorites of many players.
There are more specs common to the Gibson brand than to Epiphone's. So, why isn't this a Gibson?
I'll just leave this here. Comment away. I have a bad feeling about this...

Nice review , thanks guys . I’m stuck between this one (cherry) and a Gibson SG (cherry) . I’m 65 years old but I still feel the need to get that cherry 🍒 !
Get the Cherry!!
Gettin mine tomorrow!
I have the identical model and it is first class. Yes, there were a couple of high frets and the neck relief needed adjustment, but all in all, it is a lot of guitar for the money and much, much nicer than a Gibson SG 50’s Tribute I used to own, which was neck-heavy and had a neck profile akin to a baseball bat. This one feels just right, sounds great and the satin neck finish is perfect.
I have one and it is now my workhorse. One guitar to do it all.
Just got one yesterday played it all night, I’m loving it.. read no reviews beforehand was best guitar in shop..
Hey me too!!...love it
Just bought a cherry one from MooreMusicGuitars yesterday, should be here Tuesday. Hope I can sleep between now and then!
How are you liking it? I’m thinking of getting one
Bring it here and let me play some 1 bar blues on it I wanna play one now
Cool, enjoyed your vid brother!
Wanted to share i decided to get one of the Epiphone SG also. However, 2 months now i’m still trying to get kinks out. I have been playing guitar for quite a few years and believe it or not i’ve been playing a Yamaha SA1100 for 33 years! Seriously, many many gigs on it. Never had fret work or anything major, other than replacing pods. 335 style. So you know the pain there. Anyway when the SG arrived, I realize there will be tweaks to adjust etc., action was super high, so decided to check the truss rod and it was very loose, frets on bottom of the neck needed filing done. Saving time i just wanted to mention i use 10’s always, after breaking the first string the first gig i used it, kind of broke my heart; i rarely break strings. So decided to try Elixir 9’s, not a preference just had a set. And now been playing stretching strings for a gig tonight, i’m getting a buzz fret sound on the first string from lower F-G#? I suppose i’ll just take
It down to guitar center being i ordered it from them and pay a pro tech to check it out. I really like the tones and love the wide neck. Just can’t wait to use it!lol
Please I don’t want to sound discouraging about this guitar, just wanted to share my experience getting one. As with any new guitar, i’m sure there are adjustments to make, so whoever is deciding to get one, might want to keep the loose rod in mind-
God bless y’all, keep pickin’!
With any epiphone or gibson the first thing you should do is take it to a luthier and have them look it over, deal with any fret issues and have it setup to your preference. Out of the box its basically not ready to play.
Hi there.....Is this guitar better than the Fender Player series Telecaster HH............Thanks
The LP 59 version is also amazing.
Almost as nice as the '61 Faded SG Elitist I used to own. But that one had the proper headstock angle and authentic bridge and tailpiece. Nice to see that Epi is upping their game, but their prices here in Canada make it more economical to buy a used Elitist or other Japanese Epi.
They’re going for mim fender territory and the prices match. Imo these are more premium than the vintera series w the way they’re built and the electronics they get. Gibson used to make guitars in this range then cut them. They had full open book headstocks too. They’re moving back in that direction which is good. But they should really offer full headstocks at these prices imo
Just telling y'all the absolute truth. Nice neck. Plays great and sounds super sweet. Can't handle punishment
Almost got 1. Decided on the Gibson SG TRIBUTE instead.😊😊😊
Use the lightest strings you can find and tune it super low or you'll need a fret job real soon.
What's the difference between a '61 and a "Pro". I ended up with a pro, and it looks a lot like the '61, same pick guard, controls and everything. But the volume buttons "pull out", which you didn't mention in this review so I don't know if the '61 does that. Does that mean different pickups as well?
I am amazed that in this day & age you haven't just looked it up with a search engine.
@@kirkhunter146 I did. The "Pro" label is not well defined and didn't run many years. Maybe I should search longer. Did you look it up and find something? Or are you just one of those guys?
Front strap location sucks. Drilled a hole through the top horn and changed it.
I have seen so many of those with broken necks at the head and body joint I call them Epicbreaks now.. Perhaps they use a better grade of whatever wood that is that is Mohogandish from Asia. I know they claim to have improved them but I haven't had the urge for one.
Is it like a gibson considering the $$ difference or still thousands miles away?
Some of the Epiphone models are blurring the lines. This is one of them. Differences in fretboard wood and tuners, but the overall build quality, playability, and tone is all there. This is a heck of a guitar - especially at the price.
@@MooreMusicGuitars Gibsons are shit compared to Epiphone so stop your frigging lying...maybe someday Gibson will actually win a lawsuit over something they Actually invented 🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂
@@mr.astrophysics9115 Gibson is a complete joke who plays them anyway? Epiphone all day long over Gibson
Smelly here. That' a tough question to answer. I'll put it this way; if you're in the market for an SG, you should definitely play one of these Epiphones as well. I had a ball playing on it and the pickups sound fantastic.
@@smellytele9629 the Epiphone Custom Modern figured and Crestwood Models are high end Epiphones and these models will soon have a price tags of $1,400 by next year...
The best Epiphone high end Sgs are the Modern figured Customs and prophecy Models...so long Gibson don't let the door hit ya on the way out
😅 Aw bless
I want one of the Moderns but I don't like the colors.
Actually- les paul contract was up and as they say " the rest is history ". Gibson continues that bully attitude even to this day. Irony , the very same companies are building there guitars in the same country as epiphone .
At this point though you can get a minty used gibson 61 sg for $500 more.
Thinking of doing that! The vintage cherry on the gibsons seem to be less red though which I kinda like on the Epi
I bought a used Gibson 61 with a chipped headstock for $425, and repaired it myself, Good as new.
Nice guitar. I bought one. 900.00 bucks. You'll eat the frets like a knife through butter
Epiphone name means so much more than Gibson ever could..
That's the exact same one I bought. Right down to the color. Frets are trash.
It's a Gibson - made by honorable Chinese gentlemen.
