- Dagan unboxes and checks out a brand new reissue of one of his favourite guitars, the 1961 Les Paul, or as it was later known the SG! Previously only available for crazy Gibson Custom Shop money, let's see if this new Epiphone model has what it takes to honour such a LEGENDARY guitar!
Made in partnership with the Gibson Custom Shop, this Inspired by Gibson model is Epiphone’s impressive recreation of one of the most important and popular guitar designs of all time. The Epiphone 1961 Les Paul SG Standard pays tribute to the legendary original - the very first SG. In 1961, the original shape of the Les Paul model went on hiatus, replaced by an all-new design that is known today as the SG or “solid guitar.”

Why do I want every guitar you demo, Dagan? I'll be broke very soon!!
Oh my Lord....🤘😜🎸...my ebony Gibson SG standard 2020 is gonna be jealous when this shows up..
2021 was a great year for Epiphone
That SG is truly special, I think that’s their crowning achievement for the year with the Lazarus less Paul coming in a close second
Unfortunately the slash collection was a bit disappointing
What are some not so known rock bands I need to hear??
@@BOBANDVEG hot lunch
@@Jawnietheboy I've asked 20+ people that question.
This is 1 of 3 that are really good
I just hope they make other models like this aside from the 61. Hopefully a 63 or 64
@@BOBANDVEG Raging Slab (Don't Dog Me, Geronimo, Move That Thang). Or Clutch.
2021 Epiphone put out high end Models the Custom Modern and Prophecy why would this beautiful Epiphone be any different.
epiphone sure did and this 61 is also gorgeous
Gary Clark Jr is the reason I started playing SG's and bought this exact model. One day I will own a Gibson SG 61', but for now, this is more guitar than I'll ever need 🥰
Thanks for sharing. I've been looking for a proper demo video on these since they came out a few days ago. This is next on my hit list. Keep the great videos coming Dagan.
What are some not so known rock bands I need to hear??
Favorite SG players: Dickey Betts ‘61 SG/LP used circa 1970 Allman Brothers Band, then Duane Allman used same guitar in 1971 for slide work.
Not to mention the amazing Derek trucks
Sounds great and the finish is gorgeous.
Dagan, another awesome video! Thanks. 🤘
Another great video. Well done. Keep them coming!
Bravo for making the effort to make so many new videos. My go-to channel for a guitar review
So AC/DC sounding...love it! I have a Les Paul Studio 50s Tribute Solid Gold Top with the P90s. Great guitars!
Thanks for the video, awesomeness.
ANGUS.....he's why I play my SG standard in Angus ebony...lol... Dagan keeps my inspiration going as he is my modern day sg ass kicker!! Great work as always my brother
So don't stop playing! A large part of loving your vids is obviously the generous slathering of killer riffing. My first electric guitar was a repo Gibson SG. My parents co-signed the loan for my brother...his loss was my gain. I was a moron back then and no longer have it. Your display takes me back to when I didn't have a business and always saw"rock star" in my future. Love the passion man. Keep it up. Oh...the Epi sure looks tasty and sounds sweet.
Great tones, I think the pickups really do the job here.
Great video and beautiful SG!
It's nice to see someone who enjoys their job! Always a pleasure to listen to your analysis& playing🔥😊✌🇺🇸 The Old Man NC
Got the Les Paul Custom in White on June for my 21st. The quality of Epiphone is really good and I'm really loving it! Gonna get a wah pedal for Christmas :))
Derek Trucks is one Hell of an SG player.
Just won the aged white version on one of the guitar raffle sites!
I'm in love with the white one.
This thing comes with Gibson 61 R/T Burst Bucker pickups! Those are same pick ups in my much more expensive Gibson Les Paul Standard 60s. It's 1/3rd of the price of a Gibson and comes with a hard shell case. I think I may be buying one of these.
Do you work for epiphone or something?
@@kaiju4914 no, and ironically I'm guy that's usually complaining about companies trying to compare knock offs and say they're "just as good as" Gibson and Fender. I own pretty much exclusively Gibson Les Pauls, but I do have 1 Epiphone Firebird that is pretty sweet. Only bought that because Gibson stopped making them. I was honestly shocked Epiphone is putting Gibson Burst Buckers in a $900 guitar.
@@IndyRockStar, It’s actually not shocking because the pickups are cheap to make but they just overprice them. I mean $350 for a set is ridiculous. 🤦🏼♂️
You are a beautiful man, dude
Getting this shipped in, so super excited. Awesome review !❤
Got one recently, what A Deal!!! Great Guitar with many upgrades that make it a real instrument to keep!!! I Usually use Satriana pickups, but these Burstbuckers sound really good to me and usable straight or through Your processor!!! Really Plays Well, and Stays In Tune!!!! What a GREAT DEAL!!!
I agree SG and Strat are the best shapes
Really want this looks so clean and smooth and the tone is so good the thick hard rock humbuckers put some distortion and you have the best guitar ever
Mine's coming 12/21. My lazarus is sitting on a ship off of CALIFORNIA somewhere. No Lazarus yet but my 61 Paul came in just before Christmas. It's worth the price the quality is top notch I mean come on it comes with a 200 dollar case gibson burst buckers cts pots and mine is flawless so jump on one and ROCK ON !
Only subscribed because of Dagan. Man does killer reviews and can shred the fretboard. Love his content.
Don't forget Dickie Betts and Derek Trucks as well!!
again with the amazing vids
I have a 2022 sg and I love it, once setup and upgraded they are dangerous
My favorite SG players are Derek Trucks and Johnny Stachela. Derek is a true virtuoso.
Again Epiphone is hitting another one out of the park..... now how am I going to explain this New Guitar to my wife :D, Heya Dagan I put a link to your Vid in my Facebook Epiphone Owners group... told them to give it a watch and a like ! Keep up the great work
My all time favorite axe is also an SG by far. It's thinner, lighter and has awesome high fret access while it sounds very comparable to a Les Paul. if that's not enough they're also typically cheaper comparing apples to apples.... thanks for sharing the video :)
2021 definately is Epiphone year!!!
Zappa was always my favorite SG shredder. Great demo
I used to really want a Gibson, but after buying a bunch of high end Epiphones like the Snow Falcon and Ghost horse, I don't really see the need anymore.
Just ordered one today. Cant wait to get it
I have Epi SG Modern in transparent black. (everything I own is black)! Wonderful guitars. Gotta get another! Fabulous video! Great tones 🔥🎸😍 I’m so glad they upgraded the headstock on Epiphones 👍 Favorite SG players? Original Alice Cooper Group!
I absolutely adore my SG Muse, but dang I think I just might need one of these in white!
I prefer the sound of SG Muse! I'll take that in green
My favorite Sg player is Peter Townsend of The Who
Tony Iommi
Their were different carves in the 60s as well and especially the 70s . The standard were through many changes in carve and bevel dimensions . Even 1963 sgs are different
What are some not so known rock bands I need to hear??
@@BOBANDVEG sticky fingers and ocean alley. two great australian bands! if thats not your kind of thing, try a band called hockey dad or the skegss!
Robby Krieger got some love in this video :D Feel like he's not often mentioned in SG videos!
I was really surprised when I bought mine I love this guitar
I LOVE that red sg with the vibrola and the one p90
Just bought this guitar. It is worth every bit of money.
Nice. What's your favorite thing about it?
Still happy with it? I'm currently saving for a Gibson but this is very tempting. Epiphone have let me down in the past though
@@youreatoilet ahh a fellow Iommi enjoyer I see. I'm in the same dilemma, keep saving for a Gibson SG with P90s or pull the trigger and get some of these nice epis? Its a though one
Absolutely Lovely Guitar,I Love The Vintage Cherry 🍒 Finish 🤟😈🤟
This years Birthday guitar for August - - - 🎂 Thank you for the review - I enjoy your video's - keep them coming - NEXT, how about a Jackson X Series Soloist™ SLXM DX in white with gold hardware . . . That might be the Christmas purchase . . 🎄 -
As another owner of Thai guitar,it’s crazy,I came here cus the guy at the store said it was special in some way and I wanted to k ow exactly why, thank you
*that
Favourite Sg player? Dagan of course! Seriously!
Good stuff! I’ll add John Cipollina to the list of superb SG players :)
Derek Trucks is an awesome SG player!
Love the demonstration and the package display I would like to get one free and a ebo Bass guitar
These sound like a sg should 🤘
Great Video Dagan. Could there be a Foo Fighters and Pink Floyd Gear Guide possibly?
That’s sounds great! I hope that comes out at some point!
Shut up and take my doubloons or whatever you use over there! 😄😄😄
thanx
All men love it when it is pink on the inside
Boom 🤣☠️
😂
Never heard that one before 💤💤💤💤💤💤💤
My favorite SG player has to be Glen Buxton from the original Alice Cooper Group
Is this similar in build quality to the Elitist SG? Is the fretboard rolled and are the fret ends smooth or do they feel a little sharp?
Lovely
I want one... dammit
"It's pink inside" Dagan 2021 😅
I never listen to an sg for the clean tones crunch and above it lives well there period
Epiphone Customs Modern figured Sgs prophecy Crestwood Models all high end guitars and the 2019 Epiphone exclusive deluxe limited Run g400 Sg Pro Honeyburst has become a collectable and it wasn't hard to hear and see why..
Surprised to see burstbuckers in this SG
I bought a Gibson SG Tribute early this year from PMT - I hope I still made the right choice, considering it’s nearly the same price as this!
Like dagen has said before just like Japan Indonesia Korea and now China they make fine guitars and these high end Epiphones easily compete with other high end guitars.
Glad you like your tribute awesome guitars.
You’re Tribute is awesome , I wouldn’t sweat it.
Hi Dagan. Love the videos.
I think your're the best person to help me as you love SG's.
I want to get one but not sure which one as there are many variants of the Epiphones n Gibson's.
I also dont know whether to get an epi or gibson.
I have only been playing for a few months and am using a Squier Affinity Strat HSS.
Please Help.
Cheers.
ROFL. Bro! do you still have the plastic protective cover on the pickups in this demo or am I trippin? (just wondering lol)
Does anyone know what guitar is hanging on the left wall?
Which would be easier to play with the epiphone SG 1961 or the SG prophecy. I have tried the Epi SG 61 realy nice guitar but i haven't tried the SG Prophecy would appreciate if i could get your opinion because you have played with the prophecy .
Lovely. Another 1 for the ever growing list. 😂
Woodstock sounds 👌 🔥
Great video and tones. Can anyone elaborate on the neck? Is it tiny, medium, kind of thick?
Ya but nice creamy Gibson thick.
Just brought one
How does this compare to a Gibson SG Standard? I've had 3 Gibson SG's and loved them all.
There are so many great SG players and the reason why we want to pick up one. That being said, the inspired 61' was a Les Paul that later became the SG by itself. In the 61' Les Paul (SG) my favorite player is Mick Taylor. I love Townsend, Iommi, Young, Betts, Allman, and many other greats that held this Rock Machine as well. The Busrtbuckers really put this guitar on the map. All that have trouble spending the $1500 or more on a Gibson, will not be disappointed with the better Gibson Burstbucker pickups than the Epiphone Probuckers.
I purchased the earlier model and changed the pickups immediately. I put Tone Master Handwired PAF Exact Replica's and it smokes away any Gibson Les Paul Standard today. The guitar feels good and it's set up right.
Frank Marino
I just ordered the white version. Epiphone has been kicking ass lately, and now with the inclusion of Gibson pickups in a few of their models, why not? These Burstbuckers are much better pickups than the 490 set which come in the new Gibson SG Standards.
How so are they better than the 490 humbuckers?
@@bushcry1 To me, they sound much better than the 490 set.
@@bushcry1 I think the 490s are Ceramic (correct me if I mixed it up)
490s are actually great pickups.
I prefer them to these BBs.
They just sound better to me. I like the 490's, I just like the Burstbuckers a lot more, especially for the style of music I play.
Barry Goudreau from the original Boston and Frank Marino.
Could you do a review on a fender Lead with Humbuckers?
Angus young..sister Rosetta Thorpe...legends
Burstucker 1 make a better neck pickup in an sg . The 2 is good as well but a 2 in the neck is already mid heavy in a les paul and even more so in an Sg . Burstbicker 1 and 3 is perfect in an sg .
I need to check that out
What's the difference between this and the epiphone sg standard herritage cherry?
I too like white SGs. Not so keen on Cherry Red SGs. Black SGs are very acceptable also.
Did it come with a truss rod wrench?
Every year it seems it gets harder to justify paying top dollar for a Gibson SG rather than an Epiphone SG, something I thought I would never say! Angus Young has to be my all-time favourite SG player and I would drool and dream of owning a "proper" SG.....but like with this recent Epiphone model, you are getting pretty much the same guitar for a hell of a lot less.....but still there is that part of me that wants the Gibson SG, despite not really having much of a reason other than its the one I wanted when I was younger and having the logo on the headstock. I'm sure there is some tonal difference, but at this stage its got to be so small that only someone who handles guitars all the time like Dagan would be able to tell the difference and not a bedroom warrior like me!
Also, strange as this may sound I am a full pickguard kinda guy and wouldn't want the half pickguard that this one and many Gibson's come with! The standard with full pickguard is perfection in my eyes :D
epiphones pick ups and construction aren’t as good as Gibson. Their pickups are muddier and most of the ones I have played, including the new ones, have been less resonant. They’re good guitars for the money but my Gibson SG is still much more comfortable and clear sounding.
@@Otis-Isom Thankyou for giving me the greenlight for pursuing a Gibson SG! :p
Seriously though, I have wanted an SG standard for so long that to buy an Epiphone, no matter how good, would be a downgrade and I would still have that itch for the Gibson model so in my mind its just better to save up for the one I want :)
The pickups are no different, they are same burstbucker pickups. The wood too high end Epiphones are no different to thier American counterpart and no wonder why when with a guitar that coat 650 when for a bit more money you can get a Gibson.
Epiphone have a great reputation evident by support and endorsers they have Gibson new owners have done a marvelous job giving the Epiphones the respect it deserves.
Tony Mcph of the Groundhogs was, by far, the gratest SG player, in my opinion.
Sister Rosetta Tharpe (the Godmother of Rock 'n' Roll) played a '62 white SG custom with three pickups and a maestro vibrato. I'd love for Epiphone to reissue that because there's no way I can afford the Gibson Custom Shop model!
ANGUS YOUNG IS DEFINITELY MY FAVORITE SG PLAYER!!!!
One day, Angus told that his brother plays better than him!
Which is better the SG standard or the 61 SG standard? Are they the same?
"Guitar picks make great scissors."
Is the Epiphone SG Custom Ebony also composed of 2 piece mahogany such as this one? Why would one choose this one instead of the Epiphone SG Custom Ebony?
Fun fact all of the most famous Sg players did not play the 61 or 62 les paul sgs . In fact players preferred latter models. Most agree that the best sgs were made in 63 and 64. The 61 due to its neck join was prone to breaking and not staying in tume . So in 63 and 64 they were modified for better neck satbality . They made the neck thicker. A 64 has quite thick but not baseball bat thick neck and the neck join was moved down the fretboard a couple of frets. Ed King said the 63 and 64 were the best and much better then the 61 and 62 models. Ed had a few 63 and 64 sgs . Clapton played a 64 . Iommi had a 65 special and then Custom built sg copies Angus young had a 68 and a 71 . Krieger had a couple of 65 specials a 67 standard and a 68 standard Harrison had a 64 . Mick Taylor had a a 63 . Alice coppers guitarist had a 73 Custom. The reality is the 61 and 62 were not considered great guitars in the 60s and 70s but being the first sg being called a les paul and having pafs give it a mystique which is more about cork sniffing and marketing
Thanks for the comment. Interesting
Why did you use ‘latter’ instead of ‘later’?
I thought the 61 had 3 pickups?or am I getting mixed up with the custom?
Zappa!!!!!!!!
Dagan said tonewood and the comments didn’t go crazy??? Nicely done, everyone! Tonewood is most certainly a thing.
How does the slim taper-c neck compare the 60’s slim taper on the Epi SG Standard?
6 in one hand , half a dozen in the other
@@benallmark9671 kinda figured. I just really like the neck on the standard and didn’t know if it was much different.
All the ones I have seen so far seem to have very dry and pale looking fretboards . That is my one complaint with my epi 59 . The board is very dry even after having it treated and it slows the the action.
What's a Dagan ? A sales rep? The Les Pauls have the Slim C neck verses the slim D which isn't that slim on all the other SG's by Epiphone.
Favorite sg player is me of course,,,,,I win
Favorite SG player? Frank Zappa, man.
Tony Iommi…best SG player
🤟
