Just finished going through your UW walkthrough, and I'm impressed. You even finished the game without using the rune bag! Excellent work. I've finished this game a couple times in the past, and didn't know of half the shortcuts you did. Your UW2 walkthrough is brilliant also. I wish they'd release another UW game using modern 3D technology, it'd have real potential.
Thank you very much for uploading this! I just made a time-travel 20 years in the past... I had not seen images not heard any music from this game since 1992! I remember the thrill of the dark corridors and unexpected rats... never managed to go further than half of the game though :p Anyway, thank you very much!
Yes this is the lookingglass engine, used also in System Shock. Most advanced 3d engine at the time, only required small updates for system shock... It is NOT full 3D. The levels are stored in array format and contain similar information to Doom-style levels. However, the engine implemented bridges and whatnot to enhance the 3d aspect. From a playing standpoint it is full 3d, you can go anywhere in the levels. But the levels themselves are only 2d.
It's also worth pointing out that Duke Nukem 3D which came out in 1996, four years later than UW1, was still essentially a 2.5D game like UW. I read that the game designers used some visual tricks so that the game seemed to be fully 3D even though it wasn't.
Ok, thanks for checking this out. I suppose that considering the time this game came out (1992) real 3D wasn't yet possible to implement. I agree it's an awesome game and when this game came out, the computer game magazine in Finland gave it 98 points which is the highest score obtained by any game ever since that.
Long live the great games of Looking Glass Studios! Thief is my favorite game series ever. Never had a chance to play the Ultima Underworlds though. Cool to be able to see it in action here, although a speed run does feel a bit empty for those who've never played it, because it skips past a lot of the context of the story. :) I should try to find a video with a narration by the player, I find those funny and insightful when done well. Anyway, great vid! Very impressive game for the time!
I loved this series. Being an amiga freak, I know the whole RPG scene :). This was such an enhancement from EOTB and Lands Of Lore. This was 3d. But Amiga Chaos strikes back will always be my favorite.
@jazzpsalti The quake engine had 3d objects but not 3d levels, in reality it just had code to automaticaly form 2d textures into 3d objects, i forget when quake came out but it was one of the first games to have true 3d even though the whole game wasn't 3d
A great great game, i recently came across a notebook i had kept back in 1994 with translations of the Lizard peoples language, brought back some memories :)
I think you could actually fly over enemies like the golem at level two who is below you in a pit guarding some valuable treasures and you could kill him by levitating and casting fireballs at him. So there doesn't seem to be any limitations with flying over enemies so I'd say it is full 3D :)
Although Quake came out after Descent, I thought Quake did have true 3D environments. It still used sprites for some effects (particles for example), but I remember being able to long through the floor on to the level below. Maybe that was still a visual trick?
I would love to have played Ultima Underworld as a bowguy/archer build, but it seems that the developers only created the "missle" skill for formality, not be be really used, because there are about 30 arrows/bolts in the whole game and there is no way to make more or neither does any NPC sell them At best you get some pellets off boulders but they do crap damage and are still in very limited number In Ultima Underworld 2 you can get infinite bolts from a traps or by letting Iolo shoot you
@thecybercat I got something to say about ultima: Beware the green goblins treasure chest room glitch. I just pushed the green goblin away and closed the door broke into the treasure room and closed that door and looted everything and broke the locked chest. The door fell through the floor and i couldn't leave,i was stuck in a room with no door because it fell through the floor. Has this ever happened to you?
How do you get the alternate battle music etc? I'm a bit curious, because I was replaying the game recently, and had the same "normal" battle music (different from yours) all the time, until for some reason my inventory started glitching and items from my inventory could be seen lying on the ground in various places, where when picked up the "old" one would dissappear from my inventory. At that point I also got the "alternate" battle music, but I still don't know why.
@TheGatekeeper7thSeal i've played it and its also one of the hardest rpgs in the series, heck ultima has more than 1 game that makes you want to pull your hairs out in frustration.
download dosbox.com my friend gets all the old 90's games free. I just got back into this game. But but when i played this game i was 12 years old. Now im 29! jesus im still trying to pass this game.
Ah, this game was amazing and I spent a mountain of joyful hours on it as a child. Thanks.

This was not only the first computer game I ever played but just about the first time I ever used a computer! Happy memories of a long time ago...

Cant wait to get to this. Just started a Let's Play for the entire Ultima series.

thanks for this one! brings up good old memories :)
Some nice fella mapped the UW1 levels as custom maps for unreal tournament 99: gee, i must had tear in my eyes as i saw how UW could look in 3D...
So freaking awesome!
I will post the PSX version's speedrun without using any glitches.
Your speedrun helped me a lot. thanks!
Long live the great games of Looking Glass Studios!

My my. I appreciate your video. Good work.
WOW you actually make the controls look incredibly intuative
Ha, yeah I played it on a 386DX-25 & a rotten mouse. How sweet the upgrade to the 486DX2/66 was !!
My favorite monster is the "lurker", cool name :-)

q recuerdos de este juego... me demoré como 8 meses en terminarlo...
BEST GAME EVER!!!
Without this game, there would be no Oblivion nor King's Field.
A great great game, i recently came across a notebook i had kept back in 1994 with translations of the Lizard peoples language, brought back some memories :)
@jsundqui yes you are right... the first game I can think of that was totally 3d and had a workable render was Descent
one of the best games ever!
I still think THIS is the best game ever released. played it on a 386 DX40

@thecybercat Like father like son, the ultimate nerdness for ultima runs in genes. :)
That's very cool
I think they just found a way to put multiple floors on a map so you can have, lets say a bridge, and then a floor or water then floor below.
This is now what people call Tibia.
anyone find a free download link or torrent for this game please tell me!!!!
@thecybercat I love it man, I used to always watch my dad play this game too.
I would love to have played Ultima Underworld as a bowguy/archer build, but it seems that the developers only created the "missle" skill for formality, not be be really used, because there are about 30 arrows/bolts in the whole game and there is no way to make more or neither does any NPC sell them

I didn't understand that thing you were doing at the end, blowing things up?? what does that do?
If looking glass could see this :)
I played this as a kid. Even though I kept trying, I couldn't figure out what to do or where to go :/ at all.
@thecybercat I got something to say about ultima:

best. game. ever

the graphic looks good compared to my ultima underworld 1, you have any mod or any different settings?
9:56 I always thought that cheat would only work in UW2.
@TheGatekeeper7thSeal i've played it and its also one of the hardest rpgs in the series, heck ultima has more than 1 game that makes you want to pull your hairs out in frustration.
so how are you supposed to know how to do any of that stuff if you haven't beaten in like 100 times before
Was Underworld 2.5D or a subdued 3D implementation? It's hard to tell running around as much as you are, but it looks like the former ...
why did you name your character Gunnar? your favorite hero of Heroes III?
Gunnar is my name :-D
nice speedrun. you must have plyed it over and over to know exactly where to go and how eh?
i just got this game and i dont even know how to play it
my friend used dosbox to down load all the old 90's game. then you type in mount d h:\ -t cdrom enter then d: enter then uw
