- I optimized my strategy so that I only visit every world the absolute minimum number of times possible. Final time is 52 minutes 41.2 seconds. This is about my eighteenth recorded attempt and is probably about as 'perfect' as I can get in a single-segment run. I'd guess if I got it absolutely perfect it'd probably save about 2-4 minutes total, getting it under 50 minutes. While I never 'cheat', in order to pull off this fast time I did take advantage of several very interesting glitches and shortcuts. Now I did originally consider doing this run without using them, but the problem with not using them is that it would have easily taken two or three times longer to complete (a lot of boring time spent building up the character, etc). So since I just wanted to go for the fastest achievable in-game time (1 minute real-world equals 1 minute game time, meaning no dying or sleeping as it uses game time) using only methods inside the game world.

One of the most atmospheric games of all time. My favourite features are: Gameplay is so deep, the environment gives so many pleasant surprises for a game of its date esp whole discrete individual worlds, much more interactivity with NPCs. Too much to mention, and I don't want to, to not give too much to people who haven't played it.
Fantastic! I was cleaning out a cupboard the other day and found this game. I've yet to install it again, it prompted me to look up things about it which eventually led me to here. I never did complete it back in the day. You do an absolutely fantastic job here.
Mate, great job. UW2 is one of my fave games ever, and this is a superb speedrun. The part of the game towards the end where you enter Praecor Loth's grave is really depressing and adds to the overall creepiness of the game. Cheers for uploading.
I had the hardest part finding Nystul to treat my blackrock gem. He always seemed to be somewhere else. Sometimes I just got so agitated with furniture in the way I would destroy it. Heh, heh, and my favorite mean thing to do in the game was to kill the brain creatures in Kilhorn Keep. (Although the spell that wipes out the entire level -I can't remember the name- was cool for about 3 seconds, until I realized I couldn't get out of the level.)I love this game, it still ranks #1 on my list!
@CountDown0 I know man, me too. They had started an unofficial project which never made it ... The immersion of this game is unbelievable.
@TheGeolocation I played the first one as a teenager 3 or 4 years after ultima underworld 1 came out.
I remember sitting down and playing the first one for hours completely involved in the game exploring and enjoying the game.
It's a spell. If you check the bottom left corner of the main screen (above the text block) you'll see the spells being used. Daylight, Walk on water, and this one (not sure of their official names) are commonly used throughout.
Im sad, I've missed UW1 and UW2 in their times. I've played Dungeon Master 2 and Daggerfall as first dungeons, missed part of history. But I'm sure, I would enjoy UW, I feel those very fascinating emotions (from good old games), when I'm watching video from these games.
the music in UW2 I think is absolutely brilliant, much more thematic and moody than UW1 but UW1 did have good music too...
so... much... MEMORIES!! I remember this game from my childhood, i played it 24/7 but my mom hated it becouse you could kill people with a sword (lol) so he sold it to a local gamestore and bought me SNES with Super Mario World, i was a bit disappointed becouse it was my favourite game but i was even more disappointed couple days ago when i realized that it would be extremely rare in its original box and booklets!! : (
My Apologies, you are quite right, i thought you were referring to later on where there IS a spell. not sure on that one, it does appear to be a good jump or 2.
If somebody made an up-to-date version of this game, using a good 3D engine (something like Unreal Engine 3) and making the interface more modern (WASD was unknown, at the time), I'd buy it immediately. But probably I'm dreaming...
does anyone know where to get the soundfont that will make the game midi's sound exactly as in this video? thanks.
@ExarKatarn Both Ultima Underworld 1 and 2 came out before Arena.
@eran5005 Yes it's possible to run it even on windows 7. With DOSBox

You're talking about UW1, not this game. But yes, I played UW1 quite a bit also, and got stuck on the Slasher of Veils at the end. Had to resort to walkthru's to finish the game.

another question - how do you jump so far? is there a trick you use to jump better? i've upgraded my acrobatics but that doesnt appear to be it... thanks
