i saw him in 03 at the riviera in chicago
after his set, i was in awe and i went to the bathroom
he was surrounded by about 5 women all dressed in the same almost athletic/cheerleader outfits
as a 16 yr old, i ran up to him and he asked, "do you play?"
i nodded and said "yes, sir"
he responded "well you dont play enough, get back to it"
he changed my life and i did start playing more
God bless you, Yngwie. you were a legend before and more than a life changing experience to me now
I saw him in Minneapolis at a bar about the same time and I went to the bathroom between sets and who shuffles up to the urinal next to me... yep. YJM... totally mind blowing! I wanted to squeak out a "hi".. but, urinal etiquette.. I did give and receive a nod, though.. :)

I find Yngwie's slow playing to be incredible. Amazing sensitivity to vibrato, etc. Same with Jason Becker. They get the label as fast players...but people that think that haven't listened to enough of their playing. Or they have mud in their ears.
Jason Becker is dangerously under appreciated . His new stuff is brilliant even tho he has ALS

YJMs humor can be very dark sarc/ 'tongue n' cheek. Goes right over most heads they get 'offended'
not really ...Jed Nadin is right his cocky attitude has changed over the years.....eons ago ..he'd be pretty insulting at times...like when he would play parts of EVH eruption tapping and yawn at the same time....it was funny as hell...but disrespectful ..

When he was young apparently he was very cocky, but now since then he has changed and matured completely.
2-3 moments in time he's on video flipping his Iid. I have GREAT people skills and did that 2-3x last month lol. Just didn't have a camera following me. 😀

Imagine being 14 in 1984 and a guitar player walking into a record store and picking up Rising Force.
It literally changed the guitar world overnight.
HoshiHearts RetroGaming How did you hear about him enough to come to the conclussion that you don't like him without heard his music? Usually it's a song that peek ones curiosity about an who the artist or band is begins.

I did that very thing! I was 14 when I picked up that album. I was HUGE fan of his when he came out. I would agree though. I fell out after Odyssey. Although, I still appreciate what he does.
Would love to check him out on tour again and take my son. Just took him to Maiden back in June.

The first time I saw him in person, he was touring in support of his "Rising Force" album, opening for AC/DC. What a show! I saw him again in 1988 supporting the "Odyssey" album. It was festival seating and I made it to up the stage right in front of him. Getting to see how effortless he made everything look blew my mind. I put YJM right up there in the ranks amongst the best to ever play the guitar.
Great interview, Nick Bowcott does a great job at these, very professional and genuinely interested in the interviewed person.
Last piece of advice is pure gold. Long live Yngwie J. Malmsteen.
I have to add that my brother and I got to watch Yngwie soundcheck before a show in 2005. It was in Sauget, Illinois. Yngwie just looked at us but didn’t throw us out. That’s just how cool Yngwie is.

First saw this man at 103 KDF's One For Sun concert at Hermitage Landing in Nashville Tennessee in '80 or '81. I was 13 or 14 years old. He was with Alcatrazz and I remember swimming in front of the stage (stage was on lake) thinking..."What the hell is this?!!!!" How does he do all that?!!! He was ripping up the neck like there was absolutely nothing at all to it! Unprecedented. Also saw him with ACDC at their Fly on the Wall tour several years later when his solo career was taking flight. Puts on a great show! Love watching him play...always have.
Saw him with generation axe still play's eith passion and his tone was awesome definitely cuts thru the mix.. Pick up an Yngwie strat feels like quality guitar.. YJM marshall would be nice to.. Jyst like to say thanx Yngwie for giving me tremendous inspiration

Yngwie is a master of over the top excess. Sometimes I think who the hell does this guy think he is? But the answer is a one of a kind guy. Nowadays honestly underrated with a lot of younger people like myself. He’s a fascinating guy whether I’m feeling it or not. He made me realize how awesome a Strat is for fast heavy music. The clarity will expose everything if your technique and feel isn’t there.
His last response is just fantastic, it sums what everyone who wants to be a real artist must do; you must play and do what you really love. Because there wil be critics, there will always be people who love and other who hate what you play. The haters you have to ignore and keep going, doing what you love to do.
Great interview... Do what you love...don't listen to what other people say. Malmsteen still going strong after all these years.

Karen's Guitar Channel yup! I don’t care what anyone says about him. This mans dedication and passion and intense appreciation for the craft he loves is unmatched, one thing that nobody can deny is his pure passion for the music he loves bleeds into everything he does.
Love how he has stuck to his root's of his influences. Great sense of humour also and loved all his albums mostly the Goran Edman era!
Well that was fucking incredible. The final piece advise he gives, even though I've heard it a million times over and over from other people (and I do try and follow it myself) really is amazingly well put.

When Yngwie goes into the blues-type parts with his style mixed in, there is nothing better. Like on the tune Little Savage. He destroys on that song.

Saw him at a G3 show and I've been a fan ever since.

I can't quite recall how I discovered Yngwie. It was somewhere around 2006 and I got this DVD called "Yngwie Malmsteen - Far Beyond The Sun" that I still have, but if I already knew him or if that DVD was the sting that stung me idk. He got me into playing guitar and got my first short after. What's is sure though is that that DVD captivated me like never before, I was 14-15 years old and his madness really got me fired up, his music send chills through my body and took over me and made me the best air guitarist in the world 🤣
The solo in "Heaven Tonight", "Riot in The Dungeons", the main riff and solo in "Deja Vu" followed by that funky bluesy lick, the intro and riff in "Evil Eye", the infectious rythm in "Queen In Love" as in "You Don't Remember, I'll Never Forget"... Well the entire songs really, I was tranced. The best of his arguably 2 best albums 'Trilogy' & 'Odyssey'.
'Eclipse', 'Magnum Opus', 'Alchemy' and 'Perpetual Flame' (which the previous album should've been like with it's name) are killers too. 'Fire & Ice' and 'Facing The Animal' are highly recommended too. 'Rising Force' and 'Marching Out' are great too if you have no grudge with Soto cuz Yngwie's work was ground breaking and the first real foundation of the new genre.
Everything else except his Concerto Suite-album is just meh or not worth it in general. But if you like them then fine :)

AT THE TIME OF THIS INTERVIEW, Yngwie was 54 years old (!) At that age, we should all hope to look and act so youthful and healthy - and to have such GOOD HAIR.

However, for the vast majority of human history, 54 has been at-least considered to be "middle-age"; and for many people, it STILL signals a "middle-age degree of bodily slow-down" (if-not worse). Frankly, even for someone in contemporary times, it is "the exception" when they can still maintain the physical capabilities - , and still look appealing enough - , to continue to do "the Rock-star thing".
I know right? I'm 38 and bald as a baby. Yngwie is a class act and a stand up dude.

I remember as a young rock chick i was always into Van Halen he was so popular in 80,s LA but when my bf of the time gave me the Rising Force album it was like Wizardry i could not believe Yngwie could play so fast on guitar he honestly made EVH look like an Old Man in comparison , YJM is the best Neo Classical guitarist ever fact.
Gotta say Yngwie holds true... over the years when grunge happened and other musical genres came and went Yngwie did Yngwie... saw him live and I don't care what the haters say Yngwie kicks ass big time.
As i heard the first time Black Star it was if i am smashed to a wall. It completely changed my view how to play a guitar. But then came Jeff Beck. He reached my Heart with one single Note full of Emotions. Yngwie needs hundred notes to get the same effect.
Yngwie is one of the best... The true electric guitare virtuoso... Beast technique, feeling and taste... Big influence for a lot of guitare players...

What do you mean play lke him. All the greats play like themselfs. Technical ability ? speed ? chops ? there are or were palyers out there known and unknown that have equal or more chops ect ect. i.e. Shawn Lane, john mclaughlin, Allan Holdsworth , and the list goes on... Of course respec for what he has given to guitar world, but he is not the only one in that level
never said there wasnt players on his level as far originallity,chops and creative influence. but when it comes to speed,clarity and ALL OUT SHREDDING! HE IS THE BEST!! ;-)
We cannot call Yngwies playing shreding. But anyway if it is for technical ability and scales all over the board in blistering speed and clarity , there's none more advnced than Michael Angelo. He can play that much and then again same with lefthanded guitar, , with the hand upside down on the strings , with his hands crossed ect. ect. , for hours... none can do that NOBODY.
Having said that of course Yngwie is a musical genius to a point of bringing the bar high up in Rock guitar with his innovativeand unique style and coin his sound, and deserves respect for that .
