  • Many guitar players these days are labelled as a 'virtuoso' or a 'maestro', however, arguably there are none more deserving of either of these titles than this issue's cover artist, Yngwie Malmsteen. With a brand new album titled 'Blue Lightning' out now and a major U.S. tour about to kick off later this month, Nick Jennison caught up with Swedish guitar giant at Handel & Hendrix in London, the location of Jimi Hendrix's 1960s Mayfair flat.
Special thanks to Handel & Hendrix at 23 Brook Street, London, for the use of the Hendrix Flat.

I asked my parents for a guitar at 7 years old after watching "The Buddy Holly Story", then again at 8 years old, then again at 10 and at 11 I got a broken acoustic (body face was lifting away). My parents said I wouldn't stick with it and it was an expensive investment to make if all I was going to do was put it down and never play it again. Finally at 14 I got a cheap electric (Mako Exotic), this was in 1994. I have been playing since then and I have to say decades later my parents were wrong. Yngwie was an inspiration to me at around 24 years old along with Becker, Vai, Johnson, Petrucci etc etc.
As a full grown adult, parents if your kid asks for a musical instrument give it to them. An early support will lead to future endeavors.

I totally agree. Of course, there are many other guitar players in the background that also contributed to change how an electric guitar should be played. For example, a few weeks ago I saw a video of Frank Marino performing in 1975 and it was killing. There was a lot of SRV and EVH there, so people like him also have something to do about guitar evolution. Of course, the three you mentioned were huge and a game changer :)

Say what you want about Yngwie besides being an amazing guitarist the man has a clear vision of what he wants to accomplish as a composer. Been reading his interviews for years and never heard him say anything different. His music, his songs and his way. So it's take or leave it

    • @CloudsBeyond
      @CloudsBeyond Před 5 lety +17

He does have a vision which is good for a musician to have but he is now heavily budget restricted - hence doing homemade badly produced albums with him doing nearly everything. Yngwie is a bigger name than e.g. Impellitteri, Magnus Karlsson, Timo Tolkki, etc but those guys are doing very professional recordings with top musicians and singers. If he wants to try reignite his career he needs to hire top musicians and a good singer and get them in the studio not doing homemade stuff. Recent albums by Magnus (Kingdom Of Rock, etc), Impellittteri (Nature Of The Beast), Timo Tolkki's Avalon, etc BLOW AWAY any recent Yngwie album and the reviews/acclaim show that. He doesn't realize it but that is unfortunately self sabotaging his own career and harming his legacy.

Just one of the million Yngwie interviews I remember: During Seventh Sign, when he was suggesting that the "band is great", they are all Swedish and they have a great understanding and they love classical music and he sees this band lasting forever.....Yngwie persuaded himself about his "own path" that even made him lose his attention to detail in his albums, attention to his phrasing and soloing.....attention in general.

He had mainstream success and had big hits when he was in a band (then Rising Force). The way he works, being the focus, being the owner and just paying the members made him decline 100%!

Yngwie Malmsteen is and has been my all time favorite guitar player ever since I first listened to I'll See The Light Tonight video on MTV'S Headbanger's Ball back in 1988. I was barely 10 years old and his guitar playing really blew me away. I love mostly everything that he has done including Steeler, Alcatrazz, and his own solo band Rising Force big time. The last studio album I bought was Relentless. I love Yngwie as a guitar player, not as a lead singer. Even his live band these past eight years or so are not the amazing musicians that his past bands were. He started out so strong with Jeff Scott Soto as his lead singer, Jens Johansson as his keyboard player, Anders Johansson as his drummer, and Marcel Jacob as his bass guitar player. The most current band he has now is nowhere close to how amazing his first touring band was. I have never thought that he has a huge ego because it is his band. He wants total control on all his albums which includes writing all the songs, lyrics, music, melodies, playing all the instruments, producing, mixing, and engineering the album because it is his band and his name is on the product. I just wish that he would get a proper band, make studio albums in a proper studio, and especially get a proper lead singer. He is still my all time favorite guitar player , but I hate what his band and albums have become in the last eight years or so. He is much better than this, and I hope that he will realize it one day really soon.

Always laugh when people say negative things about him: it's not a coincidence that NONE of them can ever play like him - not even a snippet of what he can do. No internet or way to discover the Gabriel years. Alot, of readers what of thought....."huh"!? Genesis!? Clue me in Yngwie fans did he talk about Gabriel Genesis in early interviews. Deep Purple and similar bands were mentioned.

Him, Vai, and Buckethead are my favorite of the “shredders” although I hate that term. Complex and technically brilliant but melodic, passionate, and tasteful with it. I’m primarily a jazz/fusion, prog, and blues guy but man those guys do something to me. I never understood the idea that if something is musically complicated it automatically equates to being “soulless”. I have no idea how you can listen to Yngwie’s intensity, wide expressive bends, fiery vibrato, etc, and call it devoid of emotion. A lot of the hate for technically demanding music (in my experience as a pro musician for 20 years) comes from these Indie guys that love to brag about not practicing...lol. Nothing wrong with Indie of course.

For one thing Yng is substituting All the minor scales ,and Bebop blues,
it's not JUST the harmonic minor, in his solos , the verse melodies ARE harmonic minor YES , but the solos, all bets are off on that one
look at As Above So Below in tab , the run right before the verse there is a Major 7th and a flat 7 there it's the harmonic minor with a flat 7 , that is a bebop harmonic. ONE of the Bebop scales
a good book is playing ii Vs by Joseph Alexander , it shows all those things
When you play the Minor pentatonic , that is the 2ed mode of Meodic minor Phrigian natural 6
I wrote sweep arp city the winter of 97 , my singer worked for Yng and played him my Demo as a challenge , Yngwie laughed and said , why must they all take the sweep arpeggio from my style
And when he recorded Alchemy , he really was out to prove the mix of single note lines with sweeps were what it took to make the whole sound come together
Really blown away by the Alchemy CD .
Blue Lightning has some great examples chock full improv , the hendrix stuff is great

To those that say YJM is just speed is pure ego. If you listen to his songs it's not purely about speed it is also technical, and very soulful. He revolutionalize and fuse classical music and heavy metal and created neo-classical music. His music is communicating to audience. There are a lot of guitar players who are technical but can't produce the same feel, charisma and magnet like Yngwie does.

Nothing of Yngwie's material in at least the last 17 years has sounded fresh to me. Still, he is one of my all-time favorites. On the early stuff, he played some of the most intense solos I've ever heard. Maybe it would serve him well to collaborate with someone, to achieve something fresh, for a change.
