George Best just brings tears to my eyes. His staggering brilliance. Yes of course we have Pele, and Muller and Beckenbauer...all absolute geniuses from then but there's just something haunting and sinister and hypnotic about George Best and his beautiful, BEAUTIFUL presence on the muddy pitch. Absolute poetry in motion.
Brilliant comment, thank you. I write this in August 2021, 50 years after his 'last hurrah' - the first part of the 71-72 season when his brilliance was undiminished, putting United 5 points clear at the top of Division One at Christmas. Somehow in 1972 he was never quite the same, and of course when he retired for the first time at the end of that year, aged just 26, his greatness had gone forever. But, for those of us who remember him at his peak, the memories now are as bright and wonderful as ever.
Unlike today, not every match was recorded, sadly George's peak was between '66 and '69 and much of his brilliance was not recorded. Those fortunate enough to witness him during them years will remember what an absolute magician he was. R.I.P George and thanks for the memories.
I don't even like football, but George Best deserves to be the legend that he is. He is just 10 times better and faster than anybody else I've ever seen and he makes it so entertaining. The goal at 5.09, I've never seen anybody else do that. I don't even know how he did that. Amazing.
@@critical_analysis He is exaggerating in one direction whilst you are exaggerating in the opposite direction, the truth probably lies somewhere in between as they say LOL. For me it will always be 1.Pele, 2.Messi, 3.Best, 4.Magico, 5.Maradona, 6.Zidane, 7.Cristiano, 8.Di Stefano, 9.Cruyff, 10.Ronaldo. Say what you want it is in that order that they all impressed me with their primes & peak moments of their careers.
@@Pun1Sh3r_360 I have seen enough footage of all the past great players, read their stories, opponents views, circumstances and so on and all that makes me think that Maradona was a cut above the rest. He was not highly technical like Cryuff or Van Basten but also had magical ability of a Messi and above all he was a leader of men who could inspire his entire team. What Maradona achieved with Argentina in 1986 and especially with Napoli is quite possibly unsurpassed. To me, even though Messi is probably the greatest of all time when it comes to sheer numbers and also his insane ability but he shades a bit behind Maradona. These two legendary Argentine players will always be a cut above the rest, including the fantastic and memorable player Pele. Rest of the players are more or less could be stacked in tight places, like Cruyff, De Stefano, Platini, Zidane and so on.
Tavy@ george best had that special something that other great players didnt have. I thinck its his great balance when running with the ball and then shrugging of vicous hard tackles like the ones we see here on muddy swamp pit parks. In the whole of 1971 he was the greatest ever seen. Like that lob over big p at jennings is my favourite goal. Then the one chopper harris tried to snap georges two legs but wasnt hard enough and quick enough, then best took it round peter bonneti who was a great keeper like big pat. Then the 2 goals against stoke when charlton put the ball on a plate for george to run onto, then when best got in the box the defender tried to bring him down thats why best rode the tackle from the back to then put the ball into the roof of gordon banks net with hes left foot and from a hard angle. That goal was genius. The speed, the hard balance to stay up then placed the ball into the roof of the net. Then hes second one when he nipped in and took it of the defender to kidd banks on he was going 1 way to then take the ball round the other way and walk it into the net. Banks said afterwords "as i came out to block it george then swung hes body round the other way with the ball. i thought inside my mind that was absolutley fantastic the way george did that, and i was lieying on the mud. But inside my heart i was applauding him But i couldnt show it, i couldnt go up to him and say that was magic george. I was made to look a real fool out there i realy was. George was just a genius" what strikes me is george scored all hes best goals against the greatest keepers in the game. Hes scored at least 6 against gordon banks. And pat jennings and peter bonnetti and loads of other great keepers at that time britain had the best goal keepers in the world. But george made them look really average. And at international games to. The 2 against stoke in 1971 were up there with hes 10 best goals of all time. For years i didnt know or notice that was the great gordon banks best had scrambling all over the mud lol. Becouse banks does hide hes face when best walked round him and into the net. Banks walks into goal but never looks at the main stand or cameras. A believe banks hadnt been totally humilated like that before. And not just once but twice!!!!!! Banks said in hes book george scored the best goal ever against him and there wasnt any tv cameras there that night. He said it was 1971 and we were at the victoria ground and it was heaving with at least 50 thousand there. Sir matt had taken over again just for a short time. So the ground lit up like a catherine wheel as george paraded all hes tricks and fancy flicks. George was looking very sharpe, i thinck sir matt being back made him at ease. So after 15 minutes george gets the ball just along the edge of the box trying to find a way in, then john stills dives in and george just did a shuffle to the side leaving john on the mud. Then peter gray tried to tackle george but george just walked past him, then alex garvey put heself up for humilation next, george duly obliged as garvey stood looking but not diving in as ye never dive in with george, george just put the ball throw hes legs then made a sharpe short burst of speed as some 1 else tried to catch him but georges speed just made the guy slide past him and tackling fresh air. Now that left george and me, as i whent out to narrow the space down a goal keeper must watch the ball not the player, george moved to his right my left, then he dropped his left shoulder as if to go left, my right. Then he swung his left boot on the ball as if to shoot hard only to stop hes boot dead on the ball, by now iam rocking on my heels like a toy soldier stuck in mud and then george dropped hes other shoulder and moved the ball about 3 inches, and then i fell down forwards trieying to stop him but he was now past me and he just put it in the net. Then raised hes arm. Its the greatest goal i have ever seen in football. I still have pictures of that goal in my study on the wall and when i look at them now and again i always wonder how he managed to do it. How he beat 4 men in a space of 10 to 12 feet and me also in the way he did it. He did a shimmy your sister kate would have been proud of. Then he beat 1 without touching the ball. He just sent him the wrong way. George was just a footballing genius. Then a had to face this same genius 2 month later at winsdor park belfast. And we all know what happend then. I whent to kick the ball up field then george struck like a viper and kicked the ball over my head then we chased after it like two school kids in the playground and george got hes head to it first and knocked it in. The goal wasnt given for foul play. But he didnt foul me? By gordon banks !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
A lot of people don't think he is coz he never played on the biggest stage: the World Cup. Imagine if he was english, they'd have certainly won the world cup in 1970, and that amazing brazilian team would not have won it. One of Best's best qualities is that even though he was greedy he always worked doubly hard to win the ball back when he lost it. My dad is a huge Best fan and whenever I ask him how Critiano Ronaldo compares, he always says "not in the same league." Simply the Best.
Great memories, football was better then, see all the other great british players then? not like now and they played with sheer joy, and not just for the money.
Tavy@ George best was the greatest entertainer i have ever saw on tv. And that includes not just sport but all kinds of show business. Becouse he treated the game as show business. The park was his stage! I can still remember the first time i saw the one he lobbed over big pat jennings and 3 spurs players on the goal line, i shouted NO WAY lol. becouse i was aged 11 at the time and had watched football for years. but had never saw any one do that before, never. in 1971. and a first saw it in 1983. a just laughed in sheer admiration at what i just saw. best only had a split second to decide what to do? thats when nature took over with talent he was given by God, he took it on his chest then without letting it hit the ground he lobbed it over every one from 14, 15 yards out at an angle, exhibiting sublime excecution gauged to the very inch. Its the only goal on the video they show twice!!!!!!!!! R.I.P GEORGE
thats a really good compilation, one of the better ones ive seen. He was the greatest, if he'd played in the World Cup he'd of made Maradonna look like a one legged gerriatric.
The players who always wow me the most when watching them were Pele, Best, Messi, Maradona, Magico, & Zidane. From the pre war era players I've read about by far the most impressive were Giuseppe Meazza & Gyorgy Sarosi, they were acrobats on the pitch in an era that was very rough.

Well upon watching this I think it's fair to say he's on a par with Messi. However George was playing with an old football, have any of you ever tried volleying a ball of thick leather? Or heading it for that matter? Seriously, it takes getting used to. Messi uses modern day, perfectly weighted footballs. I'm sure Messi would of adapted just as well, therefore I place them on a par. Best has similar movement, unreal control, clinical finishing and a playmakers instinct. Sound familiar?
Yes I'd agree with this... those people that say Messi is miles better than Best or Best is miles better than Messi are delusional... both are amongst the most talented players of all time and both actually have a lot of similarities.

Since then I've been lucky enough to watch all the greats, . The fabulous Brazilian squad of 1970. I've lived soccer and my life revolves around it. When I hear people compare Messi to the greats, I just laugh. Sure Messi looks great in today's game. I could name 20 plus players who he can't hold a candle to, Best of course is #1. Soccer went into a serious decline in the late eighties/ early nineties and still hasn't recovered.
