    Perhaps the greatest,who can really say? All I know is that he was a true genius,two footed,good in the air,great pace and the best balance ever - and jumped over fouls rather than go down like today. What a player he was. I'd take him over any of the modern 'stars'.

    • @alanmctavish4802
      @alanmctavish4802 Před 2 lety +2

      Mr rainjunky, i dont mean to be rude here wich it may sound but i prefer to be honest. Or we just kidd ourselfs and every one else on. But when a player dies young and the way he died and its the exact same in any other young stars wither they were actors or singers but i cant help but notice all off a sudden there classesd as the best at what they did. And in the short space of a week wich to me means its purely a sympathy vote then theres there age and how young they were, duncan edwards was age 23 when he died. But when george best was just age 23 we really have to be honest and say he was never in the same class as george best was, george had already won man utd the european cup at age 22 and the leauge before that at age 21. And i believe if george didnt get injured in 1966 at age just 20, he could have taken man utd on and won the european cup after beating benfica 5-1 in there own ground and he just waltzed past those players as if it was a game on the street, a mean can you expect duncan to have did all that and put another 25 thousand on the gates where ever man utd played. There attendance was a smooth nice 42 thousand at home till george came on the scene it went up to at least 65 thousand. The gates were closed by 2pm home and away. They qued from 6am till 12 or 1pm to get in. A believe every knows george won them the cup if you watch all the rounds up to the final, george did it with sheer hard work and skill and his natural flair. Duncan couldnt have did what george did between 1966 to 1968 to then win the cup, he didnt have that self-belief and same quick skill under pressure with both feet and timing and pace that george had to make him the greatest player in the world between 1966 to 1972. But it should have been at least to 1979. Come on mate, sure duncan was a great player but not in that class or near it. The older ones like harry gregg would say it. But he might struggle to say it at times that duncan wasnt in georges class becouse you could tell just by listening to harry talk about george and he says "there was so much to give, there was so much to give, and we didnt get it all and he didnt get it all either. George best was a diamond with a tiny tiny flaw in there" and he was right.

Considering I teach in a school in east Belfast, 1 mile from George's family home I thought I'd let the kids see some Best in action. 20 lads weaned on Ronaldo and Rooney going 'ooh' and 'ahh' at the sublime skill. Wonderful though Messi is he lacks the sheer beauty of Best in full flow. I love Messi so don't misunderstand. Messi is in many ways superior but what has truly never been seen again is the magical mix of beauty and talent that Best represented in 1966 to 1969. The true meaning of the word glamour is magical beauty.........no one - not even the incredible Messi - has the sheer glamour of George Best who was the Beautiful game in person.

The sheer panic he creates in opposing players, it's palpable when Georgie Best gets the ball at his feet, his balance, his power, his sublime skill and with both feet, incomparable.

On foggy grey muddy potatoe parks to then casualy just roll the ball over the line! No chance! George Best was the greatest player that ever played the game. Simple as, he had the lot, speed, grace, bravery, timing, tenacity, two footed, great in the air, flair, remarkable speed of thought, skill, what more could you ask for. He had the lot. And once he was clear on goal Best rarely wasted a chance !!!!!

    Tavy@ i meant to say, who ever picked those 3 brilliant songs to george best playing and dribbling and scoring in full swing at his best couldnt have chosen better music. And who ever made this upload up really knows there stuff and how george best played at his very best with body swerves, dummys, fients, draw backs, nutmegs, amazing control, speed, tenacity, timing, skill, heading, remarkable speed of thought, bravery, flair and two footed. This is the best george best upload i have seen becouse the music is just spot on. 'The verve' is the first song and 'The Las' is second and 'The doors' is the 3rd song. And 3 brilliant groups who i like very much. Me and hundreds of others took years to get the first two songs and i couldnt believe it was 'The verve' and 'The Las' becouse i knew jim morrisons voice and song the first time i watched it becouse we always played the doors years ago, but 'The verve' sounded different i think. But great to watch, its a 10 out of 10 from me. It makes you want to go out and play football again. When kids old enough to know and enjoy playing football would always be out side with a ball once we had seen george best playing on tv and in colour. Becouse this was back in 1981 when i was age just 8 year old. He had that impact on you and made football look so good and most of all enjoyable and fun even if you made a mistake, he drilled that into all the hard housing schemes every where. Were there was alot of fighting and being kicked by bullys. But george even made the so called hard bullys want to enjoy the game just to get a full game with out boys all leaving after 10 minutes, he was that good people just wanted to play like him and to hell with the rest. Wich can be a good thing, becouse some one always wants to control the game and that means winning by hook or crook. There was 1 of they guys in every area across the world. Well it is the biggest sport in the world and always will be. But i have seen grown boys at age 15 and 6ft tall crying there eyes out becouse there team got beat by a team up the road and wanting to hurt some one, thats how much it means to them to win at football becouse winning to them and me shows your better as a team and player !!!!!!!

    When Best was using his left foot (free kick assist for the EC 1968 Final for example, and countless other goals) he was fantastic, when he was using his right foot, he was unstoppable. Era for era, that's what puts him above Messi for me (and what I mean by era for era is if Best had the same opportunities, and was raised in the same football climate as Messi with the nutritional and training based advantages Messi has , though I can't erase Best's addictive personality from this), Best could do EVERYTHING, Messi can do nearly everything, but he tracks back like a coal train on a rural Welsh railway, and his weaker foot is far inferior to Best's.

    The goal against spurs in 1971 is my favourite george best goal it was just sheer genius. Not many players would of thought of doing it never mind doing it. A cross comes over into the spurs box at the stretford end and pat jennings trys to punsh it clear but gets challenged in the air and only gets half a punsh on it and it falls to best who is at least 14 to 15 yards out and at an angle just to his left side, so the ball comes down and best lets it bounce onto his chest then lets it drop onto his right foot and lobs it over big pat jennings and about 2 spurs players on the goal line as well. Exhibiting sublime execution gauged to the very inch. I first saw it in 1982 when i was age 9, and it was the first goal to make me laugh in sheer admiration, becouse i hadnt seen any one do that before. It was a pure joy to watch. Especialy for a young 9 year old who was football mad and never missesd a game on tv but this was something diffrent. I didnt even know who he was, i had to ask my dad "who is that" i said. And he said "george best" with a bit of maybe sadness in his eyes but still enjoyed his goal again wich he saw about 30 times no doubt. He said to me "that man had all the skill in the world and left the game at only 26" i didnt even know what to say as i had just saw him 2 minutes before it and didnt know who he was, then when i heard that at 26 it seemend so young, but my dad like most knew the full story, the legend, the legacy, the goals, the drincking, the lot. I just wanted to see more of his goals. And when other older people told me how good best was and what he did on the park i didnt know wether to believe them or not. He was a show man. And would take his top off and say to the guy who kept pulling him back "here just take my top you only have to ask me instead of pulling it off me, and heres the ball too if you want it that much just take it" and other stuff too. And i was meant to believe all this about this great man at only 9. Wich was all true as i found out the older i got lol you couldnt script it. Then when i saw the famous goal against gordon banks when i was age 12 i thought who is this guy? meaning anything was possible with george best on the park. Anything anything. He made it look so easy wich i know in a game it is anything but easy. I started to thinck the other teams were just letting him run riot, i just couldnt believe some one could be so good and still only 22, makeing keepers just look like complete idiots as he had them diving all over the place.

The way he took the ball past that player, drawing the ball in with the inside of his foot and away at the same time on the touch line. then stops and lets the player catch up with him to then chip a beautiful pass with hes left foot over 2 players to his team mates feet. And on a park full of mud and water and ice. Thats the natural skill coming out him for us to see. He didnt know he was going to do all that or plan it. It just happens bit by bit. You cant teach any one how to do that. How can you say to a 7 or 10 year old boy in 1958 "ok son when the pitch has no grass left and its all mud and water and ice, when your on the wing at the line and a pass comes to you fast and a big player comes in to get it first what you is go to meet the ball as if to stop it first but then draw it inside to you with the inside of your right foot and at the same time go past the player. Then just stop and let him catch up with you, then you just chip the ball over to another playerwhos 30 yards away with your left foot right onto his feet.lol the boy would look at you as if you were mad! A was pissing maself when a saw that best clip at 7.56. He made it look so easy but delightful a couldnt help but laugh. And the state of that pitch? It was bad. The worse av saw yet!!!! In 1968. like cruyff, eusiebo, pele, beckanbauer, no british player even comes close to it. Although celtic had a great team and won it the year before in 1967 to be the first british club to win it. Big billy mcneil said "it was the easiest game i ever played in. I couldnt believe how much inter milan just wanted to defend. Especialy after there one goal lead. At half time big jock said "ok its done now dont moan about it, there trying to defend that lead wich i thought they would at least try and get another 1 or 2 goals to finish us off. But i want 2 extra players up front, 1 from defence going into midfield and 2 from midfield playing as forwards making it 5 forwards with 2 dropping inbetween the midfieldto help them out when needed and helping the forward line out too. This change will have them with 9 defending thats ma only worry becouse strait away they will see the change and maybe just park in the penalty box as italians always do. And there the best in the world at it. Teams always wonderd how they managed to win a game with 8 defenders lol some one qouted they win becouse the other teams scored own goals.lol. Big tommy gemmel said to billy mcneil when it was 1-1 and hadnt kicked the ball or were in any danger for 85 minutes of the game. "its hard to believe its a european cup final isnt it, ye a know said big billy, i have just counted 9 of there players in and around there own penalty box. Such was the mounting pressure from celtic. If it goes to extra time we should take them then becouse you know there not fit for going the extra 30 minutes. Continental teams arnt used to it tommy, there not trianend for it. They dont train as hard as us i heard" then celtic scored. Inter by this time were being pulled all over the place by celtic. A celtic player missesd a reasonbly great chance 5 minutes before the goal. Some said it was sitter. And to me all sitters are the same. A sitter is a sitter!!! Its like an empty goal from 6 yards out and you only have to kick the ball or even fall over it hard enough to roll it in. By the way a dont believe inter did notice celtics change at half time. By moving two up front to make it 5 forwards wich wasnt unusual back then! By moving one up from midfield but really he was an inbetween man to help the forwards and midfield. And they moved one from defence up to midfield as an inbetween man who helped the midfield. but was to help out the defence. Mean while back to George Best, he was english player of the year in 1967,68 by over 635 votes from players in the the english leauges. Then he was english top goal scorer with 28 leauge goals. 38 all in. In the same season. Then he was european player of the year in the same season again. 1967,68 then he won the european cup or played a major part in it. Then in the same season he was british player of the year. And all before he was age 22. If you watch all the games up to the european cup final you will clearly see George Best won sir matt busby what he always dreamend about. And George won it in style! R.I.P GEORGE AND THANCKS !!!!!!!!!!!!

You have to understand what a star he was. Since he was 19 Bestie always had endless women whenever ad wherever he wanted them. This along with alcohol destroyed his will to play football.

      alan mctavish Best would indeed be even more brilliant on today's carpet pitches & the rule changes ruling out the hatchet-men of his era. Better than Messi? I think watching how quick his feet coordinations were in tight spaces on terrible playing surface tops, compared to today's carpet tops, coupled with unbelievable balance. He would give Messi a run for his money. With Pelé, Di Stéfano, Cruyff, Maradona, being the other players in my opinion, who could give Messi a run for his money.
      Never fancied Messi when he turns out for Argentina though. In that area of national team football. Pelé, Cruyff, Maradona, have him licked

    If by "academics" you mean people who decide this stuff then yeah. But then they're the only people that matter in terms of what we're talking about. Look at any atlas and the group of islands are known as the British isles. It's very easy to just Wikipedia is. Yes there is a 'dispute' but only there is a 'dispute' about whether Jesus rode on the backs of dinosaurs. As I pointed out it's only a political term if you're intent in politicising it. It's really not very important.

    Ireland is not a 'British' isle, it is only part of the so called 'British Isles' as far as academics and politicians in England say it is. The term British Isles came into use in English at the same time as the term British Empire. Surprising hey? In Ireland these islands are never referred to as the 'British Isles'. You should know that coming from Limerick. Type 'British Isles naming dispute' into Google.

    Chip on your shoulder much? How much Ireland be a part of the British Isles when it's not part of Britain? Easy. The British Isles and Britain are too different things. Britain is the name of the island containing the countries England, Scotland, and Wales. The British Isles is the name of that island plus the island of Ireland and other assorted small island groups and individuals islands. It's really not very complicated and nowhere near as politically loaded as you seem intent on making it.
