Salty has always been a favourite character of mine, it’s impossible to hate him.
I love Salty too 💓
@Dom Grelt It's a shame he's so underrated and underused
@Dom Grelt I read on the Wiki that BoCo was originally supposed to play a role in 'Calling All Engines'
@Dom Grelt I think he was supposed to have Mavis's role but his model had been destroyed
WHAT?!?!?!?!
Emily acting like a sister to Thomas and Percy here and then acting like a mother to Henry when he's ill is so heartwarming for me. Season 7 was so good, man.
I think it’s the other way around: A sister to Henry and a mother to Thomas and Percy here.
@@mythicbadger9855 Emily's language is written like a mother's in What's the Matter With Henry, at least to me
Tbh honest l don’t see Emily as a sister figure to Thomas.
Sorry buddy I disagree
@@Error_-ct2vp who are you talking to
Salty honestly feels like a character that Wilbert should've come up with. He feels just so natural to the universe
I agree. I always thought Salty was a welcome addition to the series.
@Dom Grelt To be completely honest, I don't know why they used Fergus at all since he was only used like once or twice, and after they broke his flywheel while filming the rock slide scene in Bill, Ben and Fergus, it practically rendered his prop unusable, hence why he only appeared only about 2 more times because he was a new character
He probably would have done if he had kept writing ✍
Now that I think about it, Fergus’ role in this episode could also work for Trevor, what with them both being traction engines.
I wish salty was introduced sooner than season 6, he’s such a fun character, high on life. He’s a jolly pirate on wheels. He rarely gets mad, he’s easy going, hard working and entertaining: from singing songs to telling stories about sea times. I never realized till now that, salty gets along well with the trucks because he tends to sing when he works and the trucks are known for singing mean songs to the engines. Salty is somehow able to entertain the trucks and distract them from ever pulling any stunts on him for being a new engine.
I love this episode. It shows how Salty is a hero. It is his ideal role in the sense he is quite sensitive. He couldn’t be away from the sea for a few days and he got teased when Thomas and Percy mocked him. It shows Emily has changed and developed though out her time on the railway and steps up to support Salty against Thomas and Percy. It is also nice to have Fergus make a side appearance instead of his two main spotlight roles.
I'm quite a fan of maritime/nautical movies myself. In fact, my personal favorite movie of all time is "A Night to Remember", considered by many to be the most accurate dramatization of the Titanic disaster, but that's beside the point. You can tell that David Mitton wanted to make this episode like an epic maritime film, and I think he pulled it off perfectly. While a more child-friendly story, it still feels like something in the vein of "The Poseidon Adventure" or "The Hunt For Red October". Considering his work on Tugs, it's quite clear to me that Mitton enjoyed ships as well as trains. A true man of culture.
Also, after seeing Unlucky Tug's latest video, I feel vindicated in saying Season 1 is my favorite.
I hate that Season 6 and 7 get put under the radar because they came after TATMR and because the lighting became dim. Both of them are still classic seasons to me and episodes like Gordon & Spencer and Salty’s Stormy Tale shows why.
Emily's New Coaches: *AM I A JOKE TO YOU?!*
Season 7 is my 3rd favourite season, mainly because I don’t think there’s truly one bad episode on there. I like to think it’s the most heartwarming one, with those cheesy endings that I’m a sucker for.
However, my favourite of the season is Fergus Breaks The Rules. It has Fergus, a very unique character in every kind of way. Diesel is here too and actually feels like his Season 2 scheming self again as opposed to the more playground bully style we saw in Seasons 3 & 6. Arry & Bert are also here and they really feel like a powerful threat, unlike in Middle Engine. They’re very reminiscent of how they were in Stepney Gets Lost. And those sets, especially where Fergus runs away to is beautiful and tonally so gorgeous!!! Oh, and of course the cheesy ending! Just everything here works! 👌🏻
I agree with your points about Salty’s Stormy Tale too and is a very nice runner up for me. But I just love that Fergus Breaks The Rules ending too much!
Fergus Breaks the Rules is another strong one, Season 7 is so good in general. The sets, other than perhaps the SKR, are all great.
Man, this brings back memories. I think the DVD I had with this episode had to be an entire collection of darker episodes, practically one of my first ever horror movies with how easily I got scared. This one, though, turned out to be one of the most epic.
Strange thing is, I don’t even remember Emily making an appearance in either this one or Bulgy Rides Again. I think I remembered it being either Mavis or Edward who scolded Thomas and Percy for some reason.
One reason I like this episode is simply the visuals and atmosphere. I’ve always liked dock scenes and rainy/overcast scenes, and it does them both very well!
I also like Emily’s role! For more or less the same reason you do. I always saw the main Tidmouth Sheds engines as a group of brothers, Thomas and Percy being the younger ones, Gordon Henry and James as the middle ones, and Edward and Toby as the oldest ones.
Emily definitely works best works as a sister to them, somewhere in the middle as far as age goes! And this definitely shows that off!
Glad to see someone appreciates this episode. Salty is one of my favourite characters and this is probably my favourite episode with him as the lead. Great sets, a pretty epic story and really interesting character dynamics. Could you make a Cynical Spotlight on "The Magic Lamp" and "Halloween"?
Love both of those episodes, but I currently don't have those on my list. I'll be releasing a revisited Defence of the HiT Era sometime though, so stay tuned for that!
@@TheThomasCynic Can't wait for it. Your previous Hit Era Defence video was great too and so I believe the next one will be even better
Season 7 is underrated and this episode is great
Nah sorry the season is bad
Very convenient that you've made an episode around your favourite Series 7 episode the same day my Series 7 Review video comes out.
I agree this is definitely one of the best episodes of this Series.
I feel like Season Seven going back to Thomas' flawed side without a total reset like you say was a decent idea, since the transition between Season Two and Three's Thomas feels a bit wonky without proper development (also Season 3/4 Thomas was maybe a bit too goody goody). I like them showcasing his antagonistic side with Percy and Henry in particular, things that weren't really resolved in those eras. He feels a lot more human and sympathetic from realising he can actually be a jerk to them sometimes.
I kinda disagree on bringing back Thomas’ flawed side. Bill and Ben would have easily taken him and Percy’s role. Thomas and Percy have had good development from season before season 6-7. Bill and Ben are portrayed as cheeky tank engines. I think it would make sense. As l said before, Thomas and Percy should have more secondary character roles and a few main roles in the show.
I enjoyed watching Salty’s Stormy Tale when I first watched it. It was one of the best S7 episodes to date, behind Three Cheers for Thomas.
Thanks for covering this episode Thomas Cynic I appreciate it because I also really love this episode and everything that you said about it was all true. Plus I love this episode when I was a little kid and I still love this episode now as an adult.
Possibly one of my favorite Episodes alongside Percy Gets it Right, James and the Queen of Sodor, Best Dressed Engine and Gordon and Spencer in Season 7. In which while Season 7 is a really good season I found it to be boring and I really wished that Hit Entertainment did get their grubby hands on the season and let David and the crew have Creative control like they had in the past.
Wait a minute what I meant to say was I wish Hit Entertainment didn't had their grubby hands on Season 7. But I think you already know that.
I love how you mentioned the double-plot of this story. It reminds me of many other stories that (in my opinion) are quite cleverly written, like Old Slow Coach or Edward the Really Useful Engine, where a clever plan is used to connect 2 storylines together. Like how Thomas’ witty idea connects James’ storyline with Old Slow Coach’s, or Sir Topham Hatt’s witty idea connects the Edward/Gordon story with Duck’s. I love Salty as a character, and this episode really made him feel more developed
Personally I think Scaredy Engines is one of the most underrated Thomas episodes. It's one of my favorites.
I always really liked the plot with Thomas and Percy. It's a simple misunderstandings plotline done really well. It seems to me that they were genuinely emulating him because they thought his nautical slang was cool, and he took it the wrong way, but that's the sort of thing that seems perfectly reasonable. I wouldn't be surprised if some of the big engines and/or engines back at his old home made fun of his accent, and it doesn't feel stupid that he takes it the wrong way.
Me: chilling on a season 6 kick
The Thomas Cynic: may I join
Me: Yes
But overall season 6 needs more fans, it may not be classic to me but it’s damn close. 6 and 7 have such a great dynamic and fit as a seperate era more then classic or hit
You mean like Guallne
Season 7 is very underrated.
Agreed
I agree 👍🏼

I could never put my finer on why I love Salty so much, and you just put words to it. Well done!
I have always loved Emily becasue (At least in season 7) she reminds me of my older sister.
I wouldn’t say it’s the best episode but it’s definitely a good one. Your analogy of Salty was great. Salty would probably be a good foil to Terence. The action sequence is definitely one David Mitton’s best. Salty’s Stormy Tale is definitely a great story with great visuals.
Side note for anyone that cares: that Minecraft book is written by Mel Brooks’ son! (Mel Brooks directed Blazing Saddles, Spaceballs, History of the World Part I, etc.)
While I disagree about it being the best of the season, I do absolutely love this episode. Always one of my favorites when I was a kid.
You made your point about the beginning scene completely clear. It's not considered out of character for Thomas and Percy to act like cheeky engines at the start of the episode because to me it's illogical reasoning.
Fun fact: The Fat Controller states that Fergus’s driver doesn’t know the route, implying that it takes place before Bill, Ben and Fergus.
Great video. Being honest, I really never took most of the Season 7 episodes seriously, but this gave me some newfound appreciation for that season, especially the role Salty plays in it. Analysis was on point, and can’t wait for the next installment of the series.
I love this episode and this season this was a great vid keep up the great work!
I really love this series so far. I haven’t really thought this episode was deserving a video but I was proven wrong. Great video!
While I never really liked this episode, I give it credit for the excellent model work. Great vid, Cynic!
I am neutral on this episode
It's one of the few episodes of the US Dub that retained Mike and Junior's music.
I like it when someone calls themself a cynic but mostly makes videos praising things
Fantastic job
-Some book about cubes
My favorite season 7 episode is Bad Day At Castle Loch.
In my thoughts, Season 7 is a great final hurrah to the classic series.
I think season seven is underrated as well
4:55 I'm pretty sure Fergus DOES speak when Salty collects him.
my favorite episode of season 7 is Oliver the snow engine but in my opinion saltys stormy tale it adds how Fergus is not a bad engine
Season 7 kinda is underrated now that I think about it. Lots of great characters were introduced, even though unfortunately most were barely used
Maybe you could do a Cynical Spotlights video on a HiT era episode that you haven’t talked about much before? Maybe Season 11’s Dirty Work? Or Thomas and the Toy Shop?
I remember when I first watched Rob the Green Engine's video where he ranked the episodes of season 7 from worst to best and put Salty's Stormy Tale all the way down number 25, right above The Old Bridge and he said that it was a downgrade from everything before because it teaches lessons that we already learned in previous episodes and that Salty was out of character. I agree with him on plenty of things, but I don't agree too much with his opinion on this episode.
I'm a bit of a Season 7 stan...
I sure would like to see how you would like to re-write a certain episode or movie that you don't quite like and your personal improvement or changes altogether that you would like to see.
Personally l’m 50/50 on this episode since I’ve seen many reviews of Thomas episodes. I like how they depicted Emily as a character. How she stood up for Salty. As for Salty he can be relatable. I sometimes get upset when somebody ridicules me however l did not like how Thomas and Percy were portrayed. I think to most people ,Thomas is only cheeky and rude and Percy is cheeky and sometimes an idiot. People forget how much they matured from season 1-5. They both were childlike, cheeky, bouncy and innocent to more sensible, mature and hard working engines. They should know better when it is right time to joke. Another episode “What the matter with Henry” is an example. You know how l would have rewritten this episode. Bill and Ben will take Thomas’ and Percy’s role in the episode ‘Salty Stormy Tale’. They are depicted as cheeky engines and the reason why they are working at Brendan Docks is because the China Clay Pits is closed due to some rockslide or something covering their almost their entire quarry. I think this would so work much better than the actual episode. In my opinion, Thomas and Percy should have had more secondary character roles from season 7 and onwards instead of putting them as the main focus on the show all the time.
Maybe this is just to me but I never interpreted Thomas and Percy as mocking Salty when they put on a pirate voice. Don’t get me wrong that’s definitely how salty took it and the tank engines may have been wise to think about how he would’ve responded. However it seems to me like Thomas and Percy more likely than not just thought it was a fun voice and because they like salty they imitated him.
Again they should’ve read the room a little better but I don’t think they had any malicious intend behind the pirate voice as they put it they just think salty is grand so naturally they wanted to imitate him a little bit. It’s the equivalent of someone imitating a celebrity because they like their performance in a movie.
4:56 but Fergus appeared some episodes later
Thomas and Percy weren't mocking Salty, they were just copying him in the way children copy things they like.
Very interesting. By the way, are you the Leader of the Tracks guy? It’s just that when I watched this video, you sound very similar to him and I think you sort of upload similar Videos so I was just seeing if you’ve changed your name.
No, never heard of him.
@@TheThomasCynic oh right I see yeah, I think I realised that you’re not him actually now but yeah.
So what’s the next Cynical 🤨 Spotlight episode?
Dude not you too
If you're talking about the clip button, that's something which is on by default. I can't be bothered to change it. There are also certain scenarios in which you aren't allowed to disable it.
@@TheThomasCynic :(
Another banger video, this is one of the few episodes of the later-model seasons (I personally consider this the start of it) to get every single character correct. This is also one of my personal favorites of the classic series! On the subject of Season 7, I've recently made another review video on Gordon and Spencer similar to the James one you gave me feedback on, feel free to check it out if you like: czcams.com/video/2p2yjM8d6LM/video.html
Looking back season 7 was always a good season and the episodes aren't to bad themselves. However it is my least viewed classic season for 2 reasons and 2 pretty big reasons. The narration and music changes. Angelis just has no enthusiasm so it makes moments that are supposed to be exciting a bit boring. In the other hand while I don't share the quams other people have with Brandon the edits they made with the music kills the classic feel and the new music just doesn't fit well. Overall good season but suffers from poor narration and poor decision making regarding the edits for the US dub.
Unfortunately I really hate this season. It started the terrible era of Season 8 through 12. Sorry bud I feel like this season wasn’t good
No thanks.
I'm not really a fan of this episode but there are quite a few positives. 3/10
