- Hello everyone. Upon revisiting the HiT Series of Thomas and Friends in order to review it later down the road, I've had this episode in the back of my mind for quite some time now. The one episode that I believe takes the overused story formula associated with this era of Thomas and makes it work. Let's take a look at Series 9's debut story, Percy and the Oil Painting.

Wow that contest you plugged at the end seems pretty cool. I bet the person who's holding said contest is, like, super humbled you gave them a shout out.
Remember when Thomas and Percy were allowed to get angry and/or call someone out for their crap? Yeah, I miss those days.
Heck they did a happy medium with this rage. Percy didn't say stupid but he had his feelings be clear and honest
Season 9 seemed to actually have more moments of bringing them back to normal. They're cheeky assholes again in Respect For Gordon for example.
It’s another episode which Percy is IN character. Easily pissed , but passionate with his work
I love how Gordon was being nice to Percy after Gordon takes charge and the part where Gordon said at 12:12 HOW DARE YOU DISRESPECT MY BOY! part is beyond wholesome
Quite amazing is Gordon's facial expressions say a lot and there arent any lines for him in the episode
11:35
as the resident season 9 man, i approve
he approve
With tugs video on Respect For Gordon, your redo of the Hit model era defense video and this one, Hit era model Thomas appears a lot better now
Me too
@@Thomasmemoryscentral that's becuz it IS good !
Contrary to popular belief, Thomas and Friends wasn’t the first show to use the infamous so-called “Three Strikes Formula”
It was actually first used in the Fireman Sam Revival Series Episode “Neighborhood Watch Out”
Small details, but I never noticed how Gordon reacts to certain scenes. This makes me respect the character even more.
Billy being the spirit of sodor was so out of left field and I laughed so hard. You've got a new sub :)
It feels good whenever this show can break its formulas thanks to talented writers. I really adore how Percy is handled in this story. As the artist stated, he's great for being able to stand up and say his opinions.
Percy's best episode in the HiT Era. No competition.
A 3 strikes formula and Percy is in his character? Holy shit.
Another minor detail I enjoy is how they let Percy's Gauge 1 cab open as he leaves Brendam Docks open for the famous artist to hang out. This proves they could have his model work fine with the cab windows open bit for some reason they keep his cabs covered up in S6 up to the end of the model usage in S12.
Dont think they let Percy's cab open for a human to hang out of since that 1 shot in Happy Ever After when he pulls Old Slow Coach out of Tidmouth Hault.
I remember this episode well from many years ago. Incidentally I always thought the artist was a right pompous twit.
The scene where Percy snaps at the man is quite relatable, since I've had similar experiences where I've lost patience and shouted at someone / something.
Michael Brandon to me did Percy's rant better because he gives Percy a voice that sounds very annoyed at having his time wasted as it builds up.
A random TTTE fan:,,James way to arrogant in TOTB!"
My face: 12:42
I've always liked this episode, but I could never explain why. You just explained it perfectly. Nice job!
I’d also like to point out what a nice subversion the chosen engine for this episode was. It’s not news to any of us that Thomas has always been pushed to front and centre as the books and show got more popular due to marketing from whoever was in charge at the time, something Reverend Awdry was annoyed by if I remember correctly.
Thomas is the main character, Thomas is the face of the brand, Thomas is everywhere, especially as the show goes along. It would be an extremely predictable move for him to be “the spirit of sodor” and for this episode to be about him to serve that marketing goal again.
But it’s not. It’s about Percy. Percy gets to have the spotlight and be in the forefront in this meaningful way. I think that’s extremely clever and again, you can tell a lot of care was put into the writing for this episode.
This episode started Season 9 on a high note.
12:31
The Artist: "An orange buck-toothed tank engine! Now THIZ is what I've been looking for!!!"
Seriously though Luke you're comedic timing is great, nicely done as always 👍
I agree, this episode is one of the best S9s
This episode is a fantastic work of art, no pun intended, Abi literally knew what she was doing with this, I am mind blown after all her hard artwork on this and Luke’s kind words and messages to us with this video. Abi must one of the best Thomas writers, this was a work art and a sweet treat. Congrats, Abi and Luke!!!👍🤩
I certainly agree with you on this one. Usually, the HiT era has a lot of episodes (minus some) that used the same old three-strikes formula that only makes the story cliche not to mention that longer runtime not making much a difference. But when worked well, they can be interesting if everyone is in character. Percy & the Oil Painting is a masterpiece of using that formula correctly.
Also, I like that quote "How dare you disrespect my boy", really great here. I always think that the narrator's quote "Gordon thought the artist was very rude" feels Classic Series-esque.
Luke, if you bring up Percy And The Oil Painting again for a Season 9 retrospective, pay close attention to his cab for certain shots of this episode. It showcases missed potential the Hit series could have done that is one of Mittons special touches on the classic series.
So far, the best in-character HiT episodes are:
Respect for Gordon
Percy and the Oil Painting
More will come later
the episode with james wanting to be on a bilboard instead of edward is cool too
James the second best and halloween coming soon
That was awesome! Abi Grant seems to have a thing for Percy considering she also wrote Percy and the left luggage. I consider that another great 3 strikes formula episode because Percy isn't being dumb. He's just putting off a job until later which is something any of us could do. And The race with topham at the end was fun and satisfying ending. It'd be cool if you made a video on that episode one day too if you agree.
I'll cover that episode whenever I get to reviewing Series 9 in the future. But this won't be the last time I focus on individual stories
It's the final standard gauge full model episode before the weird cgi liveaction hybrid in S12 I believe?
an underrated Percy episode that uses the 3 strikes formula method correctly.
There is another great story from Series 11 that stars Thomas called "Thomas and the Storyteller" and that's an episode many fans also consider to be a correct use of the three strikes formula. Thomas is given a job to take a famous storyteller around the island, but ends up having to help James, Percy, and Emily instead. The storyteller having not seen any sights decides to write a story about Thomas. That episode was also written by Abi Grant and a great way to see how far Thomas has come in the final all-model season.
Luke, does Abi have the best track record as far as Hit model episodes go? Percy And The Oil Painting, Edward The Great and Its Good To Be Gordon really stand out as the gems
What about Thomas & The Storryteller & Edward the Hero. They also use the 3strikes formula diffrently
Granted. The three strikes formula may have been overused throughout the Hit era, but it was worth it. I'm glad Percy didn't get punished by Sir Topham Hatt. Because this Percy centric episode is alright.
This has got to be Angelis' best moment in the HiT Era.
That Gordon part is very smart ngl, only shows in small parts (He doesn't even talk) yet it actually shows Gordon's character development in respecting Percy after what happens in Gordon takes charge
Continuity!
Percy is one of those characters in the HIT Era that unfortunately was mistreated and out of character, but it’s nice that in certain moments in Series 9, along with this introduction episode to the season is just wholesome and feels like the Percy we know in the classic series, god imagine this was an episode in the style of Series 5?
I feel like certain three strikes formulas work, if tackled correctly. Such as this episode, The Magic Lamp, Dirty Work and others. I don't think Series 8 follows the formula IIRC.
series 9 was the first series to have material written by Sharon Miller, so maybe that's why the formula ain't really there in S8
Nice video
I think this also applies to Thomas and the story teller since that ep makes the three strikes based on Thomas's good wills
"Calling all engines" and S9 came out when I was born during 2005.
I mostly like Michael Angelis' narration in "Twin Trouble" and "Percy's chocolate crunch".
Brandon does have some great moments of emotion and power in his narrations from S7 to 16.
I honestly want to see the angry side of Percy more often in fanmade content in the future. Just to show that even one the youngest and nicest characters in Thomas can lose their cool sometimes when pushed too their limits.
Something other than (cough x2) "dirty Percy" fashion.
I agree with you that the Three Strike Formula could've been good if done correctly. Hell, even Sad Story of Henry's a Three Strike Formula episode
One of the better gems of an otherwise forgettable Series.
A good display of the 3 strikes formula done justice too.
The Magic Lamp is a much better 3 strikes episode, however this is also really good
Very well made video, I enjoyed it very much!
Amazing video as always!
The artist: Sodor has nothing special about it
Season 4 narrow gauge sets: Hold my beer
Season 9 is so underrrated because it has most of the greatest hit era episodes
I need to check out this episode’s UK dub more. Great video, BTW!
I just watched this episode for the first time (I grew up with the show, but I watched random episodes of the models seasons, so I didn't watch this one), and woah! This was actually good, especially for the H.I.T. era.
Even tough you don't like the hit series, in s8 the three strikes formula was rarely used, and that's why i think s8 Is underrated.
I know I ranted in your Series 6 video about I don't think Angelis is good but I have to agree with you that he did the painter better than Brandon.
Because I grew up in the US, Michael Brandon sounds very funny.
I agree it’s one of my favorite episodes
11:56 billy is the spirit of sodor?😂
He always was
We just never knew 😂
I would have loved if this episode was made in Railway Series style.
I would argue Percy’s Big Mistake is the best episode of the HiT Era but I might be slightly bias since it is my favourite episode of the entire show
I loved the music in it at some parts like when percy wakes up, or from when he collects the pipes to when he crashes the tar wagons.
@@mythicbadger9855 the cinematography is pretty good too especially for Percy worrying what'll happen to him in the sheds as the camera slowly pans away
Painter: Paints Percy at Knapford.
Painting: Has Percy in the Countryside.
he painted percy, not the station
1:25 Same here!
The Hit Era and the Sharon Miller Era can easily be summarized by this:
It was a beautiful day on the Island of Sodor's Railroad. All the engines were huffing and puffing their hardest. One morning, Sir Topham Hatt came to Tidmouth Sheds.
Insert character name here, I want you to perform a special special. You must follow a special instruction that you don't agree with.
Yes sir! Said insert character name here, but they didn't want to follow the special instruction. I'll be the most useful I'll be the best one I'll huff and I'll puff till I get the job done!
Insert character name here did the special special without following the special instruction. Something went wrong.
Insert character name here, be careful, something's wrong!
No there isn't! I make good decisions that's what I was told I will not be fearful I'll be brave and bold!
Insert character name here did the special special without following the special instruction. Something else went wrong.
Insert character name here, be careful, something's wrong!
No there isn't! I make good decisions that's what I was told I will not be fearful I'll be brave and bold!
Insert character name here did the special special without following the special instruction. Something went very wrong!
Insert character name here, LOOK OUT!
Luckily no one was hurt, but everything was a mess.
Oh no! I didn't listen to the special instruction and now the special special is ruined!
Insert character name here, you have caused confusion and delay. You must learn to follow the special instruction!
Insert character name here felt terrible! I'm sorry sir, I'll do better next time (even though they likely don't have a second load to replace the one I wrecked)!
So insert character name here fixed everything and saved the day.
Well done insert character name here, you are a really useful engine. And insert character name here was proud to be the hero of the day.
The End.
They're two and four and six and eight
Sharon Miller isn't great
Messing up their railroad too
They're the really useless crew
I AM NOT SINGING THIS!!!!!!!!!!
I wonder what the Hit Model and CGI era could've been like if they didn't rely on this repetitive formula?
You make a great point
Me, who actually likes Percy and the haunted mine:
*"This fandom is going to kill me." :')*
can you discuss the BEST Episode ever, Hector The Horrid? The Thomas Cynic did a video on it and it's fantastic.
I'm saving that for when I get to reviewing Series 11 which I'll definitely have plenty to say about that episode. I don't really want to do an individual video on that episode simply because I'm aware The Thomas Cynic did one first and I don't want to basically steal his video idea.
0:09-0:46. Nice little YTP there, Luke.
All thanks to uberduck ai
Otherwise trying to find the right clips from each Thomas episode would've taken eons 😂
I don't know about you Luke, but i actually prefer Brandon's french accent for the painter.
That's absolutely fair
Great that you do enjoy the accent :)
Yes, as a matter of fact i quite enjoy Michael Brandon as a whole. I know that he's basically hated by the entire fandom, but i still find his narration decent.
@@livioghelminighezzi5579 I dont think Brandon is totally hated but I'd say a big majority
I think the accent is actually kinda fitting for the appearance. But I do kinda prefer Angelis when it comes to attitude and voice tone, he genuinely sounds rather uninterested. But Brandon does a better job with everything else (in my opinion).
Actually, now that I think about, Michael Brandon would have been a much better choice as the voice of Mario in the upcoming mario film than Chris Pratt. Since we already know that Brandon can do an Italian accent.
I think another episode that does 3 strikes formula right is Thomas and the Storyteller
This and respect for gordon were easily the best of season 9 low bar but still.
What about Thomas Tries his Best?
I think Mighty Mac is decent, also Thomas and the statue
Duncan and the Old Mine was also really good.
I love the lesson in standing up for what you believe in, but sadly, that doesn't always work out.
Two years back, everyone in my old community belittled my home, so I took a stand. But, when I did, it only made it worse and they said something I'll never forget; they said that the Kingdom of Hawaii was something I made up. And that's what hurt the most. After that they kicked me out.
Because of that I lost the reputation I tried to build over the years, my channel and dream for it had died with it.
I know this has nothing to do with Thomas (though I am a fan), but I just want more people to know what they did.
Not everyone will change their minds if you decide to take a stand for yourself and I'm sorry you had to go through that.
But remember this
You could've easily backed away and continue to let people belittle you, but you didn't. You took that stand to fight for your right to be happy in that community. And while it didn't work out, knowing you were prepared to fight for it, means that you can find that solitude and aspiration in another place.
Things will get better 🙂
That painting isn’t even there anymore, it’s completely pointless just like everything else in the Hit era.
A simple mention of moving the painting inside Tophams office for safety or heck, put that in the library in Season 11 could have worked
3:23 Iiiiii'm going to see that face in my nightmares...am I...?
Actually the three strikes formula started in Season 9 not 8. Still an amazing video!
+juanpabloツ To tell you the truth, Series 8 of Thomas & Friends started using this formula a couple of times. However, the one that started using this formula in HIT’s career didn't come from a Thomas episode at all; the episode that is guilty of starting this garbage is Neighbourhood Watchout (S5 E7) from Fireman Sam.
Good video but I do have to ask. That lowfie outro song. Is that from dragon ball? It sounds so familiar to me
Yeah it's a lofi cover of the main theme for Dragon Ball GT by Ren Avel
Check the music list in the description if you want to hear the rest of it 🙂
Do you have the restored episodes?
Season 9 in my opinion is when the show goes down hill but I think this is a really good there some other good ones too like might Mac and respect for gordon.
A season that is officially the 1st time Thomas is in every episode whether as the lead,, speaking role or cameo
the only good hit era episodes in my opinion:
james gets a new coat.
gordon takes charge.
squeak rattle and roll.
molly’s special special.
respect for gordon.
percy and the oil painter.
I should have not laughed as loud as I did at 12:14
8:07 - 8:12. Funny!😄
I'm willing to choose Michael Brandon for Percy centric episodes simply because Angelis' Percy voice during the Hit series is insufferable. It's just this loud monotone whine. No wonder he's usually an imbecile in those episodes, a voice like that undermines any other form of personality. Brandon at least channels an offended kid as Percy during his big moment (Thomas and the Statue is another episode in Season 9 where Percy awesomely reads someone the riot act and Brandon once again does it better).
While I'm not a fan of the episode the 3 strike formula definitely helped it a lot surprisingly
Good Video, But Doesn’t “Respect For Gordon” Count As The Best Episode Of Season 9 As Well As The Hit Era, How About You Watch Unlucky Tugs Video On That Episode. (P.S. Can You Also Review The Only Best Episode Of Seasons 13-16)
Chuggington handled the Three Strikes Formula a LOT BETTER than Thomas did.
4:09
Come S13-16, it was copy-pasted LITERALLY.
I don't know which era is worse: HiT or Sharron Miller/Nitrogen
Nitrogen Miller era if only from what videos tell me is they turn up the Dr Seuss rhyming and the repetitive storytelling to a max. You can find more gems here in 2000s hit Thomas than the Nitrogen era
bwba :') in HiT and Nitrogen eras engines behave like engines instead of being chuggington clones
but Nitrogen is worse, more childish, has trashy rhymes and CGI looks bad - no details, cold lightning, fat rails, lots of space between rails, a lot of empty space altogether and a lot of generic empty stretches of rails with additional sidings rendered sometimes
not even talking about fat controller not having his own accent anymore and taking voice acting too seriously so they sound even more cartoonish... HiT era at least has Sodor layout that we had since series 5 with some even older sets while CGI Nitrogen had only some places like brendam docks, knapford, tidmouth sheds and lazily made gordon's hill rendered and a stretch of rails that is repeated over and over again
Did you use uberduck because you were too lazy to sentence-mix or do an impression?
Maybe 😅😂

Its done right but we are all sick of it
Unpopular opinion: I hate this episode, and I think that there is a total amount of 5 strikes. (I counted them while watching the episode)
That's totally fine if you don't like this episode
I can see factors as to why people would tbh
Feel free to like and dislike by your own choice 😁
Too green? I guess the artist watched too much series 8
