    So I went from 0 hours to 234 hours in this airplane. I'm currently commercial instrument working on my CFI all at sling pilot academy. These planes are so awesome. I took that exact plane he's looking at on my commercial long cross country from LA to Las Cruces New Mexico solo. 6 and a half hours there, 7 and a half hours back non stop. The only downside to these planes at the moment is that it can't go into IMC. I got my instrument rating in it but no actual instrument time. Learning on glass is awesome. I watch videos of guys flying jets and it's very similar. If you guys have any questions about this plane or the school, just ask.

      When you say no actual instrument time, you mean even no simulated time? If so, I’m confused, how’d you get your instrument rating then?

    • @kevinbutler9786
      @kevinbutler9786 Před 4 lety +4

      @@Officer_Boat It's 100% simulated time. Meaning with foggles or a hood. The plane is IFR rated but the light sport category is restricted to VFR conditions only. It's kind of confusing so many people think you can't get your ratings in it but you can. Our planes are equipped with GTN650's which are certified for IFR flight. There is a downside to getting your instrument rating without ever flying in the clouds, that was my point. I am instrument rated but I wouldn't fly in actual IMC(instrument meteorological conditions) as PIC until I got at least a couple of hours of actual under my belt with someone who has real IMC time. So I am instrument rated on paper but I wouldn't call myself IMC ready. So as awesome as these planes are, and I still think they are the best trainer by a mile, they can't do everything. I would suggest that every sling student after they get their instrument rating, go out and find a way to do real IMC time on their own.

    Who will be the first to put a ROTAX 915IS on the body of a SLING TWO?!? Cant wait to see this aircraft

    • @kevinbutler9786
      @kevinbutler9786 Před 4 lety +1

      I talked to Mike Blythe(the designer) about this. You cannot put a 915is on the current sling 2. The chassis is not strong enough and the wing is not right. Unlike most kit planes, slings are entirely designed around the engine. So the wings, chassis, body and controls are designed to maximise the specific rotax engine. The sling 2 around the 912, the sling 4 around the 914, and the TSi around the 915. It's the same reason why they basically had to completely redesign the sling 4 for the 915. RV's and other kits are not designed to such strict parameters so you get more custom options but at the expense of efficiency. All that said, he told me it's in the works but all of his effort right now is in the TSi high wing development. Hope that long winded answer helps you out.

    • @Tharkunify
      @Tharkunify Před 4 lety +1

      With a Vne of 135kts on the Sling 2, it seems like overkill to try a 915is.

    Hi Mike. I like your videos, but I think you need to start listing a disclaimer on all your videos that deal with Sling products. You are clearly biases due to your relationship with TAF. Be upfront and call your videos "commercials" and/or "paid advertisement" which is what they've become. Once again, I do like your videos, and I understand that you have to work off the TSI, but be honest about why you are pimping their products almost exclusively now.

      Mike makes videos about aircrafts that he is able to personally visit and see, he is currently building a sling and is at their facilities therefore exposing him to more of their aircraft. What content creator wouldn't take care of this advantage? I do not know but I doubt that mike is getting a check from sling for each video. Also he is not harming other aircraft manufacturers in the process only promoting a brand that he likes and is around.

      Calm down dude. The guy is building a sling, he is there a lot, he is showing you their products while working on his build. He is also putting out a lot of non sling content. They are not commercials. I see him giving glowing reviews to sling competitors all of the time. Show me a video where he didn't give a good review. He reaches out to these companies to get invites to do tours and show their products, in return, he usually is very complimentary to them. That is how this CZcams thing works. So relax, enjoy the content, come to Torrance and try the product. They are actually awesome planes.

      @@mojogrip I'm at Stage 1. I have a lot of book knowledge but only flight sim experience.
      I have reached out by phone, left messages, and emailed a few schools over the last 6 months to get guidance, contacts and appointments. They won't pickup the phone or respond. It's almost like maybe you have to commit to wanting an aviation career before they even give you the time of day. I have a very good career already that can finance this training well enough, and just want to get the skills for general aviation hobby flying and instruments; maybe fixed wing, helicopter or even glider.
      Actually, one school did pickup my call, but they said that they didn't do flight training in Houston, only in Florida. My career is in Houston, so that doesn't work. What do I do?

    • @jimratichek2714

      Andrew, the flight schools were inundated with career pilot trainees and the smaller schools don't advertise much. I know there was some training going on at clover field/LVJ. All of this is changing now and there are lots of opportunities to train as students bail out due to airline cut backs. I'm guessing there will also be inexpensive planes available too. Feel free to reach out and I'll try to help research some good options for you.

      @randyvanvliet226 Před 4 lety +1

      LSA is limited to max of 120 kts at sea level, 1320 # gross, and VFR only. The 912 IS is very capable in this plane. Buy a RV-9A if you need 150 -160 HP with a Lycoming 320, and 150kts capable cruise, in a side by side. And get a General Pilots license and training too, while you are at it.
      Rather than make comments such as this, define what the mission is for the plane you want to fly, and buy something that's a better fit for you, probably that has a Lycoming O-320 in a low compression motor, that will make 150-160 HP. This plane was designed completely around the Rotax 912 series of 100 HP motors, for ease of maintenance and economy of operation.
