- In this video, we review the Airplane Factory Sling 2. We cover all the external and internal features as well as going through some of the key performance aspects.
After taking my first ever intro flight on the The Airplane Factory Sling 2, I was immediately hooked. I completed my entire PPL training and currently sit on over 100 hours in this aircraft.
In terms of flight training, the Sling 2 is in my opinion one of the most affordable and technologically advanced aircraft in the LSA category. If ever you get a chance to fly one of these machines, do not let the opportunity pass you by.

Just started my training in the Sling 2 I’m Pietermaritzburg - awesome aircraft and a pleasure to fly!
This is my future flight school😀
I did my night rating here! Awesome spot to learn
Nicely done video. Great aircraft. I also admire your impeccable Received Pronunciation.
Great Sling video, thanks for sharing!
Very well done review. Very professional. Amazing low stall speed.
John Olsson thank you!
Very nice video, i enjoy it alot. Alot of info also.
It will be nice if you can do more videos of the sling.
Fantastic review of the Sling 2 Thomas! Great piloting and narration. I did away with the vacuum gauges and have a G5 for backup in my Sling.
SlingPilot thank you! G5 is definitely the way to go - will last you longer and is definitely more reliable
Good review, thank you! :)
If you want to land short, use 52 kts as final approach speed with full flaps.
Dankie Thomas Marrow vir die resensie van die Sling II. Jammer die Sling kom nie uit met 'n bystand enjin nie. (Net vir ingeval...) Diesel?
Great video! Our flying club is soon getting the sling 2! By the way, how do you record your audio of the intercomm? And does it only work with a GoPro?
Nick Aviation HD you’ll love the Sling 2! Where is your club based?
I record my intercom through an external audio recorder (Zoom H1) which gets hooked up to the audio jack via a microphone splitter (Pilot PA-80S Audio Recording Cable)
Thomas Marrow Cool! My club is based in Port Macquarie, Australia
How do you record your cockpit audio?
Nice Thomas. I to have flown the Sling just the once out of GC. Where would you recommend getting the PPL in the Sling? My eldest Daughter has expressed an interest! Thank you.
Speed Brake I did all my training at with JFA at Panorama in JHB south - however, I believe there is a school at GC with slings
Great Video. Very mild stall characteristics in the Sling 2. BTW -- how is it that the opposite end of RWY 10 is marked RWY28?
Hey Martin, thanks for the comment! Runway 28 is the opposite direction of 10
100 + 180 = 280..
Excellent commentary and video. You mentioned many fields to land in. How comfortable do you feel regarding your ability to exit the cabin IF the airplane nosed over onto the canopy in landing in one of those fields? A big concern is being trapped inside the plane with the weight of the plane on the canopy and not being able to open it. Sling 2 is a very nice aircraft. Looking forward to more of your videos/reviews.
Hi John, never thought about that and it definitely poses an interesting question. I have never see a Sling on it's back but I would presume that the CoG would be quite far forward if that were to happen and therefore rest on the windshield rather than the canopy.
I would need to look into it a little more before I can give you a proper answer. Thanks for the comment!
@@ThomasMarrow Thanks for your reply. Interesting insight. Keep up the good work on you site ! Nice content.
@@ThomasMarrow It will rest on the canopy and the vertical fin..
Starting with Starlite soon (Virgina) and was wanting to check out the Sling, and familiarize myself in the mean time. Nice video
Luke Cronje Good luck with license! So glad I decided to do it on the Sling. Are you going to be flying ZU-STA?
@@ThomasMarrow Got all the papers sorted today, saw STA today. My mate had a flight in it. Keen to get going👌🏼
@@ThomasMarrow probably will at some stage
Luke Cronje it’s a beautiful Sling! Have fun and enjoy
Dear friend,
You have under the aircraft body an plate fluttering!
That must be fixed to avoid structural stress along time
I love these aircraft. I think there's only 1 in New Zealand, but I've flown them in the USA and they are fantastic
Kiwi Flier I’m sure they’ll soon be in NZ, the Aus market is already quite big.
@@ThomasMarrow Yeah I know there's quite a few of them over in Australia. They are terrific planes
What is this Sling 2 aircraft's highest ceiling point?
Hi Thomas, is the price difference on training due to use of mogas versus avgas?
Also the cost to maintain a type certified vs non-type certified aircraft
How much roughly per hour did your instruction in a sling 2 with starlite cost?
Would love to know too...
I am student pilot just about to finish my check ride and all my hours on 172,
If I do my time building on LSA aircraft like the sling 2 will it count in my log book and be ok when I am applying for airline ?
Khaled Al I know of a lot of people that use the Sling as an hour builder. To be honest, I believe all the airlines are worried about is how much multi/IF/night and total time you have no matter what the aircraft make or model.
@@ThomasMarrow yes for PPL is great but I am not sure about the CPL/ATPL
Khaled Al yes, I think once you’ve got your CPL, airlines are looking for multi and turbine hours
lekker vid
Is this aircraft available for hire and fly ?
What's the price for ppl at that flying school
I'm not too sure of the current rates. Perhaps you can get hold of them, it is Starlite Mossel Bay
i am currently doing my PPL on a C172 why do you recommend the sling? do you think its worth changing
A friend of mine trained on a 152 at a higher price per hour than the Sling, therefore cost being the main factor. Normally 172's are much older, burn more fuel, require more maintenance and have a higher purchase price - these costs in the end all need to be covered by the student. Not to mention the adaptability of glass vs steam on the panel. Take an intro on a Sling to make a decision best for you. Hope this helps!
@@ThomasMarrow thank you for the info. to give some info the flight school where i fly the sling costs 1750 per hour and the cessna 1950 per hour. with only 200 difference would you change?
Dominique van der Westhuizen in the end it’s entirely up to you and what you prefer. I personally prefer a more modern cockpit and cheaper fuel costs. Keep in mind that over a 200 hour CPL, that R200 difference per hour adds up!
Well there goes my medical due to permanent hearing loss from the intercom recording
Jammer/ Sorry. I know in South Africa a car/ lorry / bus license you can still get even if you can't hear. Surly it must be the same for aircraft Private Pilot License?
Sound goes loud then real quiet.
Working on it!
