800 dollars?? I picked one up for 2 dollars on a flea market
That's my style
Dropping knowledge! Looks pricey but fun! I have a video on how to shoot on VHS for a similar effect! Always fun playing with old cameras!
Yea old cameras are fun!
And what would be really cool is to attempt to shoot urbex-type videos on film (although Hi8 tape should work too, but not have nearly the same effect).
Super dope!! Great Video for people trying to learn film.I love pro8mm and I'm so happy they're getting so much support. Don't listen to vhs, someone always has to be the stick in the mud. Keep rocking Jakob.
Yea they're great! And yea some people just don't get it! I'm getting nothing out of promoting them, just figured I'd show people how they can get the authentic film look.
Easy for you to say! You are the crowned prince of modern super 8 omie! I have seen your work on vimeo. Still wish I knew your post process.
Ha!I wish man but thanks for the comp. All you gotta do is, what ever stock you use, over expose by a stop or stop and a half an you're money.Ask for a log scan so you can color correct your self.I never do 4k scans, 2k scans are plenty .I white balance and color correct in DaVinci Resolve to taste.
Assuming that camera is brand new? I would recommend getting online or a local thrift shop, anywhere from $10 - $50 for a vintage 1965- 1985 range + $50 a roll of Kodak film on Amazon, etc.
Try getting a nice Canon 814 AZE in pristine working for 50 bucks LOL
Rad video, informative for sure! I made something similar on a budget, the Canon 310XL.
Super ...a throwback to the good old '80's...😁😎
such an awesome look!
Thanks for sharing info brother
I just picked up a fimosonic xl what 8mm film will work? It looks like it needs a cartridge (new to this)
Yo Jake, have you ever worked with the new Black Magic 4k camera? If so, you should definitely make a video on that. Not sure if I want to wait on the A7S3 or try out the BMCC4K.
This great.
Dang! I'll be picking up my next Super8 camera for $20. Seeing the price of film and cameras from some of these places you should grab your ankles, bend over, and walk backwards into their shop to make it easier for them. If you are serious about standard 8 or super 8 buy film from Kodak directly and learn to process your own at home. Cruise craigslist, ebay, and thrift stores for cameras. Don't forget to ask family and friends if they have any old movie cameras they don't use or want any longer.
Where can I find your selection of genuine film stock footage that is for sale? Sounds very interesting! Thanks and regards.
Want to shoot on FILM!? Here's how you can easily do just that!
can I emulate this look? by your Tropical colours overlays?
Yes! Thats exactly why we made those. So there was an affordable way to achieve this look!
What film do they have available?
There’s no link to the store, what’s it called? I work in Burbank. Definitely want to start filming some cool surgeon visits using this effect.
Hey I just made a similar video on a budget, the website is he's talking about is pro8mm.com
The prices that Pro8mm charges for their refurbished Super 8 cams is as steep as it gets. If you really wanna blow a grand for a Super 8 camera you can already get a 16mm camera instead and have a higher res and more stable picture. The costs for film material, processing and scanning is more or less the same. I'd say get a Super 8 camera secondhand elsewhere and make sure it still works. It's a lot more affordable too. The Pro8mm cameras are also adjusted to a different picture format (Max8) than normal Super 8 cameras. So keep that in mind.
I know people say to just get a cheaper used one instead. But I honestly prefer not worrying about the quality of the camera when there is already a camera that I know is gonna be good quality, I just need to pay extra for. But if you ask me, it’s worth it. Rather then just hoping that used the camera you bought will be good.
shoot at 18fps and you have 3 mins 20 secs of film, shoot at 24 fps and you have 2 mins 30 secs. The cameras from Pro8mm have been serviced and checked and adapted in some cases. As the Canon featured had button batteries for the light meter, that will have been changed on this Pro8mm camera.
I am totally oblivious to film. What does super 8mm really mean? Can you change the aspect ratio?
Its the style of film. 8mm film theres 16mm 35mm and so on. It's just the size of the film strip.
Super 8 mm is a variation of 8mm Film. You had 8mm film (the 8mm stands for the width of the filmstrip) on spools that you had to feed into a little camera and record. Those were very popular in the 30s, 40s and 50s. However in 1965 Kodak had introduced Super 8 which was still the same width but with slightly bigger picture and did not come on spools anymore that required fiddling them into the camera in complete darkness but plastic cassettes (kinda like 8 Track tape cartridges) which you only had to insert into your camera before shooting and once the film was fully exposed you removed the cartridge from the camera, put it into a mailing bag and sent it do Kodak to develop. They would then send it back to you processed so you could show it in your projector. That means Super8 film was generally reversal film (like slides) and mostly silent. A few years later they introduced Super8 film with added magnetic fullcoat film on the film sides which was like magnetic audiotape bonded to the film and there were even cameras that recorded picture and sound onto the same filmstrip. There were also projectors and home movies you could buy which had sound and you could even later record sound onto the soundtracks afterwards. However environmental restrictions in the 90s basically outlawed the chemical process to create such film so Kodak ceased the production of soundfilm cartridges in 1997. You could still use these cameras for such soundfilm cassettes for normal super 8 film. Even today with the new filmstock you can get. Nowdsays you can even get negative film that is not meant for projection but for digitizing. The aspect ratio of Super 8 and regular 8mm film was always 4:3. However Pro8mm introduced a widescreen format called Max8 that basically requires cameras to widen their filmgate to expose the side of the Super 8 filmstrip that was usually kept blank for magnetic soundtracks that you could even glue on yourself back then. The lens of the camera also needs adjustments which is also part of the refurbishing process that pro8mm does. Max8 is kinda the super 8 widescreen format that is like Super16 for the 16mm filmformat which too is normally 4:3, just like 35mm Film.
can you suggest any best cine camera ... for a demo
im thinking of black magic 4k is it good or any alternatives
What do you mean best cine camera? If you really want to talk the best I would suggest either Arri or RED.
@@TheBuffNerds
Thanks for the reply ...
Can you suggest any cam under 5000$ ...
The blackmagic ursa mini 4.6k is the camera you're looking for. It cost $5000
@@lamarhillll thank you
or the ursa mini 4k which is about half the price
Go to estate sales and yard sales. I’ve got 3 cameras that are basically brand new (Elmo with sound) and they have no idea how much it’s worth, so I paid like 5$
You can buy a decent 8mm cam on eBay for less than $800 even. 16mm is a bit pricier though, however that's 'cause 16mm has always been more of a niche product aimed more at film schools, semi-pros, and that type of crowd where 8mm was aimed pretty much straight at the hobbyist.
Can the film be developed only by them?
Depends where you live: www.on8mil.com/product-category/8mm-film-packages/
www.gaugefilm.co.uk/
these are a couple of UK based options
How does the video look in the 4k option?
Pro8mm has great 4k processing!
Some pro tips:
If you're looking for a super 8 camera: ask around in your family (grandmother, uncle etc.) or check out a local thrift store. Check if the lens and the viewfinder aren't damaged and bring 4 AA batteries to check if the motor is running consistently. If this is the case, it's probably working and you can get a pretty affordable camera. If you really have money to blow, then Jakob's suggestion is probably a good one, as you basically buy it new.
If you are shooting on negative film (Kodak 50D, 200T etc.) you need to find a company which can make a proper positive digital copy for you after you developed the film. If you want to use it profesionally, don't go to one of those shops which digitize "home video's". Usually they don't have the right equipment and working environment to make a good positive digital copy from a negative print. If you are shooting reversal, you don't have this problem, however, I would also not go to one of those shops with reversal. But it depends for which purpose you want to use your film ofcourse ..
If you are from Europe (except the UK), you are probably going to have hard time finding a one-shop-stop such as the company that Jakob suggested. I would gladly spend some more money if there was a place in The Netherlands (or Europe) which sells, develops, and scans super 8 film. Unfortunately I haven't found one so far ..
Good company to get your super 8 film digitized in Spain: ochoypico.com/en/
Good company to get your super 8 film developed in the NL: super8.nl
Anyways, shooting on film is amazing and it looks beautiful! It is also a great way to train your eye with regards to framing, as super 8 is expensive and you really have to think before you shoot, you can't just shoot everything like you would with a digital camera. Unless you have a shit load of cash.
Actually Germany has a few places. And the most prominent one is here in Berlin and called ANDEC Filmtechnik. They do all sorts of Filmstock selling, processing and scanning of Super 8, 16mm and 35mm. They even do film-outs to all these formats from digital sources and also create Super 8 positives from your negatives so you can get Super 8 prints for screenings in a projector, if that's your thing.
A made a film after watching this on my channel, let me know what you think!!
got the same camera for 70 bucks on offer up
But if you don't live in L.A..... lol
800 dollars is way to much
yea i got the exact same camera for $100 at a local camera store lol
800 dollars???? Jesus dude you got ripped off even today when the market is picking up again
LMFAO AHAHAHA
I bought a Super 8mm camera for 10 fucking bucks on a second hand website. **I MADE A SUPER 8 VIDEO IN PARIS ON MY CHANNEL** Nobody buys them anymore, so people sell them used for super cheap! If you pay more than 50 bucks you're getting ripped the fuck off.
Paying +1000$ for these old cameras is fucking insane. It's like paying 10.000$ for an iPhone.
This is ridiculous. If you are simply experimenting with film buy an old camera online. Don't spend 100s of dollars until you are comfortable with the format. BAD ADVICE!
