    Super 8mm Film - I shot my entire summer on the Canon 514-xl S Super 8mm camera. I wanted to have a camera to bring on the adventures where I didn’t feel like bringing technology. I am already shooting my next Super 8mm film now and will be shooting a few Super 8mm films every year!

      Wait why did it take until october for you to see the frame?

    I’m a little late but that line at the beginning about being a full time creative and not shooting for fun any more is EXACTLY why I just bought my first super 8. Makes me feel comfort knowing it’s not just me.

    be sure to turn on your cameras orange filter when shooting outdoors with tungsten film to get rid of that blueish look

    Trust and imperfections - two important lifelong lessons that we never stop learning about. I loved your summer film and this was a great breakdown. Looking forward to seeing your next super 8 video!

    Hi Ryan, I recommend shooting with 50D film for outdoor summer scenes. You might get more contrast and richer colour. Great footage tho !

    Love the idea. Even tho it isn't cheap, a memory for a lifetime

      Ya exactly, I get that its not for everyone cause it isn't cheap. I was on the fence because its so expensive but honestly the film I made of my summer is priceless in a way. I am very happy to have it.
      Thanks for watching

    Lovely project Ryan. I dabble with Super 8 and 16mm on and off, and you are right, it’s soooo much more about capturing a moment (and applying a fair amount of discipline) with that format, and it can really surprise you when you get it back from the lab. Did the lab also scan the developed film for you?

    • @ryanjharris
      @ryanjharris  Před 4 lety +1

      Thanks Thomas - Ya the lab scanned and processed the film for me and returned it in 4k in .MOV

    Really enjoy your videos Ryan, beautifully done and very informative! If you REALLY are determined to bankrupt yourself in the name of your art the next step you might consider is 16mm. Its basically double everything cost wise but I still recommend giving it a go if you win the lottery, or just feel like you want to take your film shooting to the next level. The quality, depending on certain factors can actually give you an interesting balance between the perfection of digital and the feeling one gets from film. Just throwing that at you! Anyway keep up the good work and thank you for the channel!

    Could you do a side by side test with the android app which is Super 16 by Dmitry Shatilov as this does super 8 etc and a normal Super 8 camera and get 500T film and video the exact same scene and compare to see if the app is like the actual film.

    Thank you for this video gave us great insights. A quick questions what dont you use the 50D film since primarily of your shots are outdoor.
    Also the film and processing seems abit steep. Seems like you are able to get those at a much cheaper rate.

      @j-dawgdebowshi5324 Před 4 lety +2

      Salvatore Huang or just use the orange filter, seriously, all these outdoor shots are blue lol

    Unfortunately my 514 XL-S (always well maintained and preserved in its original box) has a serious issue: a plastic sprocket has been damaged by the grease used by Canon in 1979, and some teeth disintegrated. The sprocket commands the dragging of the film and it is located in a very difficult place to access it. What a shame.

  • @stfesteirasstfesteiras7377

    can you tell me if it is possible to test if this camera model is working by opening the magazine with no cartridge tape to test and pressing the button that triggers the filming if it has to rotate or not without having a cartridge inside it is possible to open and see turning or does not turn if there is no cartridge inside with the magazine open. Help me?

  • @tripyramidpictures9224

    Thanks for the video! I plan on using some Super8 footage in my upcoming film, I may even shoot the whole thing on Super 8, as the film sonly looking about 8 minutes. ...not too expensive. Any pointers?

    Hi men I have a question. I own a Canon Auto Zoom 518 (8mm). And I used it once, i used a 50D Vision but I have an issue. After recieving my digital footage I found out that like 2/3 of my footage is overexposed. 1/3 of the usable footage looks pretty good but the other 2/3 is just white (I was recording on a very sunny day). Does this mean that 50D is not good enough for these heavy sunny days or do you think it has to do something with my super 8 camera? I need your help. Thanks.

    Hey Ryan! Love the video! I was gonna ask did you shoot all your movie in 18fps or did some of your shots did you do 24fps? I’m debating on getting a 514xl or 514xls

    You shot all summer with super 8 ??? And how much did it cost you between developing and scanning $ 10,000?
