My dad was born in Belfast Northern Ireland in 1924. He emigrated to America in 1948. He was drafted into the US Army in 1949. He told me (when I was young) that while in Alabama on leave he was with a fellow soldier who was black and my dad suggested they go into a bar. His fellow soldier told him that " I can't go in there with you" and my dad was disgusted that any soldier serving his country couldn't go into a bar because of his color.

My English/Literature teacher in high school would always emphasize the word "Some" when talking about or referring to what people are like and what they do. She would state to us/me, "say some people" are like or do a certain act or deed. Never lump all people together.
