Frederick Trump (born, Freidrich Drumpf) emigrated from his native Germany to avoid taxes and national service in the army. He made a small fortune in a gold rush town as a brothel owner.
Frederick Trump (Donald's father) never saw active service in World War II. He received federal grants to build affordable homes for returning veterans, and was investigated for misappropriation of funds, most of which ended up in his own pocket. At another memorial service at Arlington, Trump accompanied retired General John Kelly to the grave of Kelly's son, who was killed in action in Afghanistan in 2010. According to Kelly, Trump turned to him and asked, bemused, "I don't get it. What's in it for them?"

That said, Trump has plenty of other qualities (many of which reflected in his speech) which I _do_ think signals a downturn in our societal intelligence. His utter disregard towards accuracy, his joyful dismissal of the artful or complex, his narcissistic ignorance, etc.

I don't believe for a second that T is demented mentally (morally, yes). He is very consistent and on point with destroying all that 'Obama, the black president' did and in destroying the entire U.S. He is calculated and plotting. He works tirelessly to hide his wrong doing and to spin them into something good. These are not signs of dementia.
