"Rally round the family with a pocket full of shells" refers to the politicians who are always preaching about family values out of one side of their mouth while starting wars and destroying families out of the other side.
Harvey Dent energy.
They’re talking about Neo Con Republicans who always talk about family values and morals, while also wanting to increase military spending and conduct wars for profit.
@@roems6396 uniparty
@@roems6396 I guessed you've missed whose been pushing for war these days. But holy paper is right.... it's a uni party and your not invited.
I think it’s the oppressed taking up arms against a brutally repressive state. Family is the community and shells are the ammo casings.
Best RATM quote I heard, "The thing about RATM are their lyrics are always relevant. The SAD thing about RATM is that their lyrics are always relevant."
Also, for anyone who doesn't know "Bulls on Parade" is an old school slang term that was used for when police would show up in riot gear or just taking any form of action nearby.
Truth!
The sad thing about RATM is that they “raged for the machine” during the pandemic.
@@izzywild4929 🤣🤣
Much like Queensryche's "Operation:Mindcrime". 36yrs later and so many lines and songs still resonate. "I used to trust the media to tell me the truth, tell us the truth. But now I see the payoffs everywhere I look. Who do you trust when everyone's a crook? Revolution calling!"
@@izzywild4929 take your meds grandpa
True story back in 1992. I worked at their record company as they brought the entire company to a convention. Unless you were a bigwig at the label office, you had no idea who some of the bands that were going to play were because some of them hadn’t had their first record out. Imagine you’re sitting in a hotel convention center ballroom. I think we were at banquet circle tables at 10 o’clock in the morning. The lights go dark and rage against the machine comes on - not singing this song but singing there belting out the lyrics to “killing in the name of” which you don’t know yet so you think that they’re telling everyone “F you they won’t do what you told me” with the “you” being “us” lol. Of course that’s not what it was it was far deeper but in the moment 50-year-old stodgy sales reps sitting there overturning banquet room tables. I wish there had been social media and cell phones with video back then.😂
i love moments like that mate, sometimes you are just lucky enough to be at the right place at the right time... there is nothing like live performances - music theater even true live television. anything can happen... and often does. ..
Someone said there is no way to make a guitar sound like a turn table. Tom Morelo says, "hold my beer!"
Hell... he might use the beer to play the 🎸🔥🤘🏽🔥😂
i remember seeing the liner notes on their first album stating very clearly that everything was done on instruments no samplers, syths etc... apologies for not having the exact wording,
Tom Morelo is one of a kind.
Hold me pedal 😂
Nahh, people were doing all sorts of things with their guitar long before Morelo. We used to call in a "bark" when you slide the pick up and down the strings like that. You can do it even with acoustic guitars. Everyone who ever tried playing guitar has at one point done that just to play around with what it sounds like.
I'm a grown man and for some reason, every time I hear this song it makes me feel like I'm gonna cry, very similar feeling to listening to Zombie by the Cranberries.
I don't know how much content a vocal coach can squeeze out of RATM, but their music and lyrics always hit hard. I always support exposing new people to their music and message.
Which one? Their original openly socialist adolescent rebellious message or the current one where they openly rage on behalf of the machine in support of the military industrial complex?
I agree. I also think it’s helpful for newbies to bring up the lyrics to fully understand what they are talking about. I see so many reactions where it just goes completely over their heads. Mr Boyd reacts is a great channel to go to. He breaks things down exact… first time hearing them he was spot on and loved them!
There's some very cool cadence things he does. It's definitely a lyric first kind of band though.
The raw passion and anger to me.
I will never understand why Brad and Tim don’t get the credit they deserve. That explosion of sound from the drums and bass drives this song and allows Tom to shine so brilliantly.
I feel ya on this one
But I don’t think they’re forgotten
💯❤️🇦🇺
Sometimes they do. Stuart Copeland mentioned them amongs the best rythm sections and to me he counts.
They do. I mean, the bass line in many Rage songs is the melody, and the guitar is just interspaced between the bass rift. But Zack’s lyrics and Tom’s ingenuity are definitely at the forefront.
At 14:15 the comment about their sounds; the record sleeve states "no samples, keyboards or synthesizers used in the making of this record", which is basically saying Tom Morello is a crazy wizard.
wizard with a Harvard degree
@@roberthaynes664 Yep, and Dexter Holland of The Offspring has a PhD in molecular biology from USC.
The guitarist is Tom Morello, and he is a wizard.
And he went to Harvard I believe
What that man can make a guitar do - body shivers just thinking about it.
He has a political science degree from Harvard.
I'm prepared to fist fight anyone who bad mouths Tom.
@@justinrichards7822OP misspelled wizard. C O M M Y
Scratching is the word you're looking for, and no, Tom Morello's guitar style is totally unique. He's a legend among other guitar players.
well, I'm one of those other guitar players, and we think he is pretty effen cool, I don't know about legend though.
Great timing. Tom Morello turned 60 this past week.
Damn we're getting old
damn...
Oh my..
Yeah, fuck. Grey hairs taking over, but hearing Tom turned 60 is the thing that makes me feel old.
I when my kids were little they thought it was the family at the beach with pockets full of sea shells ! Lol.
That’s adorable ngl
Definitely raised them right ❤
Rally round the family - They talk about the importance of family values and protecting children
Pocket full of shells - They start wars all over the world for profit
Yup. I'm convinced that's the implication they were going for as well.
They rally round the family with a pocket full of shells.
It is about shotgun shells, and people surrounding not their family but those who are othered. It is about projection of power and control over other people.
"They" is important in this line. He's referencing the government alongside the references to the police throughout the song. "They rally 'round the family" is equating politicians to the mafia with the police and military as their enforcers.
Happy belated to Tom Morello who just turned 60 a few days ago. Definitely one of the most innovative guitarists of the era and this solo is a perfect example of how he'd use a guitar to create noises youd never imagine were coming from a guitar. He's got solos that sound like cats screaming, solos that sound like dj's scratching, solos that sound like harmonicas... And its both sad and wonderful how on topic most of RATM's lyric are to both the era they were coming up in as well as today.
Tom Morello does lots of things on guitar no one had ever seen before. He uses every piece of hardware, everything in the signal chain from the strings all the way to the speaker as his instrument and sees all of it as potential for creative expression. If taking the cable out of the jack and touching it to the pickups makes an interesting sound he'll find a way to make music with it. He'll use effects pedal in ways their designers never intended and create whole songs out of the noise. Nothing is off limits. There's no other guitar player like him.
Rage is one of those bands where each member is really good at what they do
Saw them in 94 at glastonbury...already loved them from buying the first album and this was one of the most powerful gigs ive ever attended...Zach is a militant poet and his words are even more relevant today as they were 30 years ago....
Oh, sh*t. I just realized it is over 30 years... good Lord.
that's because world is always broken. It never ends. Endless wheel of corruption and war and inhumanity and violence and injustice.
UK music magazine 'Select' when reviewing that performance called it 'The Mosh put you could see from outer space'. I was there as well, I literally have the scars to prove it; cut shins in the pit.
Zack is a true poet. There are some amazing lyrics spread throughout RATM songs that both tell incredible stories as well as capture so much of the angst of multiple generations against the system. Tom Morello also an amazing guitarist. Definitely continue to go down the RATM rabbit hole, you will be glad you did.
While I could go on about all 4 of their collective, creative genius and how far ahead of their time they were, and Tom Morello especially is a wizard on guitar, you could spend a lot of time on just RAtM - but Morello does 60s folk protest songs as a soloist in The Nightwatchman. He blends metal and hip hop with Street Sweeper Social Club, he does angry 80s hip hop with Prophets of Rage, and is part of a grunge supergroup with members of soundgarden with Audioslave. He’s toured as a member of Bruce Springsteen’s E Street band. He’s got his honors undergrad from Harvard! And he makes guitars do things that you didn’t know it could do. Pure genius.
As soon as I saw her head bobbing I knew she became a fan. Welcome to the revolution! ✊
scratching for a DJ is he word you're long for
All of Evil Empire was fucking fire.
That second verse always gets me, so powerful... and it's still so poignant, feels like nothing has changed in almost 30 years
It’s crazy how it’s so damn relevant 30 years later.
Would love to hear you review their song “Wake Up”. Chris Cornell with Audioslave did a cover of “Killing in the Name”; and the contrast really gives you an appreciation of power Zach generates in his vocals.
Audioslave used to do a couple of ratm songs live. Saw them at Roskilde, Denmark in 2005 and the whole place exploded when they did killing in the name of.
Thank you 😊☮️
It is always fun to see the light in peoples minds open up when they hear these lyrics .
Seen them in chandler az 1996. That show was PACKED! We were pinned up against the stage while the field turned into a giant mosh pit.
Let the rabbit hole begin
I’m sure it’s just this one little song they got lucky on 😂
My friend once said it’s like he spitting on you when he sings and I can’t help but feel that way now. 😂
your reactions are always epic .. love how ya deep dive into certain aspects of different sections ... one of my favorite youtube creators for sure!!
Always have lyrics for RATM. There's history books in their lyrics. Unapologetically political and critical. And the musicality is awesome. Tom Morello does some things with a guitar I hadn't heard before.
love that you listened to the whole song first then went back and we got to witness it all, perfect reaction structure imo.
This singer says""I paint Murals with Metaphors "" in your mind is his Jam.
a very welcome relief to see someone actually react. The general vocal coach response is to go back to the start as many times as possible. You have a new subscriber and I shall enjoy going through your uploads.
I sooo excited for you to get to experience this for the first time!! Zach is incredible, such amazing lyrics and his tone is off the charts!! Saw them in the early 90s and their music is still so relevant!! Enjoy the journey down the rabbit hole
Wow! I was super excited when I saw this video pop up! I am going to be late to work now, because I had to stop and watch the whole thing. Glad you discovered Rage. Hope you react to more.
Such an amazing interplay of energies in this song -- it was an absolute bombshell when it came out. The production on the vocals is totally fitting for the vibe. Their advancement of technique was both bold and subtle -- simple repetition hid serious chops -- but the 1000% ENERGY was mind-blowing. I've got an indelible memory of my band pulling into a college campus for a show and being directed around the back for load-in. As we pulled into the little service alley RATM was pounding at high volume and there were kids hanging out of the windows screaming the lyrics to each other. It was a vibe and the show that night was amazing.
Bethany - I love to listen to your words and thoughts when talking about favourite songs of mine! Cause it actually always is what I feel while listening to those songs.
Cheers! 🙏🏼❤️🔥
You do usually pause throughout!!!! I loved your analysis of this great song. This song is powerful in it's words, and in it's delivery. So good. Thank you.
RATM is a band I started listening to in the 90's when I was a teenager. They are still relevant - now more than ever - sadly.
But man, back in the day you had to read the booklet with all the lyrics that came with the record, because Zack is a poet and his words hit home. It's quite telling that they found their success in Europe, because they were virtually banned from the U.S. back in the day. They spoke truth to power.
Anyway, you should check out the following songs by RATM:
1. Killing in the name (released after the Rodney King beating and the L.A. Riots.)
2. Know your enemy
3. Down Rodeo
EDIT:
Man I almost forgot one of my all-time favourites!
4. Bullet in the head
Tom Morello - The master of guitar sounds. A Harvard Grad and a brilliant guitar player. Uses a custom installed toggle switch to "cut" sound completely out running various pedals in conjunction with a harmonizer with a screamer pedal to get his amazing sounds. It's very prevalent in the intro of "Know Your Enemy" as well as the solo toward the end of that song. First time i heard that intro I thought it was a Synthesizer of some sort. Was fortunate enough to see one of their final original era concerts in 2000 at the Forum in LA.
Classic! Was jamming to this in 96 while in college.
She became a Fan for sure 😊😊
Best part of this video is watching her honest, subtle reactions while digesting the lyrics. Same happened to me years ago. First it’s ‘hey that was a clever way to word that, cool’. Then ‘oh hold on this is kinda deep actually’. Then the truth of it sinks in and you get mad, a little sad, and then Rage.
10:40 Yes! All of the musicians are playing loose with time at different points in the song and it adds a lot of groove and funk to the track. My favorite is those moments where the drummer Brad has those seven successive snare hits that are all behind the beat.
Tom Morello's guitar playing is so unique that they even put disclaimers such as "No samples, keyboards or synthesizers used in the making of this record" and "All sounds made by guitar, bass, drums and vocals" on their albums. Check out any early performance of "Bullet in the Head" to really see what Tom does with his instrument!
Love your analysis on vocals and music- patiently waiting for a Slaughter to Prevail (Alex Terrible, vocalist). Really amazing. Thanks again, love your videos!
After a long day it's always enjoyable to watch a new vid from the Queen of Reactions (your Dimash ones are brilliant!). I've been following since you had around 100K subs, you deserve every success and have a real gift for communicating musical ideas across an extremely wide range of music. Really enjoyed this one.
Also, maybe not for a reaction, but for superb singing and finger picked guitar, Bruce Cockburn's If I Had a Rocket Launcher is a powerful track (live version on here).
I'll give you a perfect five star 10.0 rating on your analysis amazing your talent evaluation and song explanation are amazing keep it going please cuz I really love watching you and your explanations interpretations
Fantastic reaction. You nailed it with the anthem and/or protest style of the song. I’m 53 and vividly remember all of the tension between police and institutions against minority communities. During my teens I was entrenched in the Republican mindset and grew up in a predominantly white area. I moved to Mexico during the late 80’s and came back to the states right at the height of all of this. This song was like a spotlight for issues that many white kids didn’t even know about, because our parents weren’t talking about it. This was a game changer for me. Love this song!
Like has been mentioned already, it’s a sad statement that this song is still so relatable today. Government and law enforcement claims to support the American family while their actions all too often don’t support this (their pockets full of gun shells), especially when talking about minorities.
Reactions are always super epic u my fav ....u know what u talking about 100%
Love your reactions and analysis and I love the fact that you let the song play through so you could get a feel for the whole thing and pick out things to go back to.
I know you have to comment and analyze (that's what the channel is about) but it seems like a lot of reactors are so concerned about copyright that they stop so often and it takes them out of the song. I get it. But sometimes you have to see the bigger picture before you can see the smaller pieces.
scratchin on the guitar is tom morellos signature sound.
I recently came across your channel and have been really enjoying watching you become a fan of, or at least appreciate, many cool bands and styles outside of your wheelhouse. Also your astute observations! You’re a really good listener! I’d be very curious to hear your thoughts and insights on some old country blues, untrained except for singing in church, artists like Fred MacDowell and Mississippi John Hurt. There is an Alan Lomax video of RL Burnside that has millions of views on CZcams that would be very cool if it made it on your (probably very long) list of music to react to. Cheers!
Great deep dive into a not so easy song with respect to vocal analysis. Rage is a phenomenal band.
That second verse hits differently 🖤
You have a great smile :)
1 000 000 likes from me to your reaction of my favorite song EVER !!!!! I always trust you on sincerity.
legends!❤
You can NEVER go wrong with reacting to any RATM song.
My favorite lyric is from the song Down Rodeo(as in Rodeo drive) "Can't waste the day when the night brings a hearse, make a move and plead the 5th because you can't plead the 1st."
P.s. I think of RATM as a 90's version of the social movement songwriting and instrumentals(more hardcore for sure) like that of the 60's.
Raw,cutting edge music that delivered messages we All needed to see, feel and hear even for a 62 year old head banger like me.
That,to me is who Rage is.
Great reaction.
Hopefully more RATM reactions to come.
Welcome to the rage rabbit hole!😂 I recommend listening to the debut album. Not for vocal coach enlightenment but for pure content and emotion. You have done several Chris Cornell reactions and I imagine this is how you came to Rage. I recommend listening to Cochise by Audioslave. It's a very "Ragesque" song instrumentally and you'll get Chris Cornell at full bore leaving absolutely nothing on the table!
just a little side note, audioslave is essential rage against the machine but with chris as the main singer, same band members but different singers, if you see tom's guitar riff in 'like a stone' and his riff in this, you will notice the similarities.
I had to stop listening to RATM for a while.
I got depressed that they'd been around as long as they had, and the machine was still going, still strong, always hungry.
It's a powerful song i love songs like that ❤
MORE PLEASE
I was a kid when folk was still on the radio and I had no appreciation of it then so I missed some of the jems. RATM and this song in particular fed me the message in my favourite flavour; head-bangy-gonna-make-u-movey. The song's been anthemic since it came out. Rally round the family. No shells though, I'm Canadian.
4:33. I like this new format! It is a great idea!🌿🌸
I´m really happy you get it. Some songs are much more than a thecnical view., those demands you to take a side.
Next… “Killing in the name of” please!
still one of my top 3 favorite bands of all time. So gooooood
Nice reaction
you're spot on about how the guitar kind of dragging at points on the verses makes room for the lyrics
Lol...young lady you got "Wild" on this choice!! Awesome! 👍🏾💯👍🏾
May be getting late for this but would love to see a video on Sydnie Christmas
Rage Against The Machine are the apex of combining rock + rap, achieving excellence in their craft. Lead vocalist Zack De La Rocha earns respect from hip-hop fans due to his flow and mic skills. Guitarist Tom Morello is some kind of wild wizard on the six strings. And their lyrical content always tackles powerful and important issues.
he song is a metaphor for the arms dealers and war being a profitable business in our current society(bulls on parade= war pigs, as in they are both violent and blatantly destructive and unconcerned with the damage they cause) and war being viewed as a necessary aspect of our lives. How murder and destruction of other countries can be taken advantage of from a business and political view point. How the government almost needs an enemy to unite the public and keep them fired up and distracted. Also how the government continues to focus time and resources on war as apposed to domestic issues. Then they also reference propaganda being taught in our schools and media.
Excellent review as always
bulls on parade were always riot cops (with shields) back in the day. love the rest of the analysis.
So glad I have gotten to see you react to RATM. They had a powerful message to deliver and much of it is still relevant to us today. More people need to hear Rage if they have not. Looking forward to Killing in the Name.
Well,,,i sure was interested in how you'd start with this baby,,hardcore shizzel,,nice to see you smile as the lead guitar kicks off☺️✌️🔥🤘👌
Im glad you like the band
What a fun watch! I never would have thought to assess RATM and Zach’s rapping vocality, since he’s not actually “singing.” Regardless, I still appreciate and admire your insights and perspectives on the vocalization and lyrics and inspiring me to re-listen to so much music every time.
And of the same era, I’m also curious to hear your thoughts and reactions to bands like Incubus or Smashing Pumpkins. May I put in a request? Pretty please?
I remember when this came out. At first my ear heard “rap”, but then I saw this video and was like, “holy cow! They are doing that with a bass, guitar, and drums!” So cool!!
this seemed like a tough stretch but you landed all points. great job, dont feel bad
fastest like in history birdie. love you
I think Tom Morello which is the guitarist for rage against the machine The only one that goes anything like him that ive seen or heard 0 is Vernon Reed from In living color they he's the only one other one that plays kind of the same kind of solos and it's amazing technique and style and I've played guitar for only 45 years. Lol😊
Ive listen to the song approximately 500,000 times, and I have never once noticed Ring around the Rosie theme!
An other song that you covered already that reminds me of RATM topics is Zombie from The Cranberries which an other protest song, although Zombie is quite different from the rest of their songs…
I love both bands!
I'm so glad you picked this first over Killing in the Name. Great reaction.
Holy shit Tom Morello!
From rage against the machine to we are the machine
If anyones interested, zack was in a punk band before RATM. Its called Inside out. Burning fight and redemption from them are great ones.
Fun fact: In the 90's RATM (Tom and Zack) had the, kind of, connection with Tool. There is live footage of Know Your Enemy with Maynard Keenan. The album version is also recorded with Maynard.
A Hard Jamm for the Tower Speakers for sure!! Looking at some comments and didn't see the guitar detail. Sounds like at the very least he has two wah-wah pedals, one sounds like the DigiTech that does Octave jumps to sonic high and drop about 4 below the norm. Nice toys!! Peace 🕊️☮️♾️😎
zacks has such a unique revolutionary voice. every time i hear a ratm song it pumps me up and wanna take down the man lol. they always been a voice of the voiceless, we need more bands like this
I would love to watch a video on your first reaction to Gavin Rossdale (BUSH) singing Glycerine live.
I'd love to see what you think of the band Skindred. They're a reggae metal band which sounds like a weird mix but it works so well. If you want a recommendation I would recommend Stand for Something, Nobody, or Trouble
Welcome to the world of RATM! Swear jars are not permitted during performances. 😂
Frekn jammmm!!
Interesting reaction
Pure rage!!!
Anger is A GIFT🤘🏽
Just watched your reaction to Lorna Shore. Would really like to see you react to Chelsea Grin, either the song Calling in Silence, or Last Breath
You should look into killing in the name.. And the story behind it becoming number one on the Billboard... These guys are amazing
