Just a little seldom stated fact about the title that "Bulls on parade is a reference to police in riot gear rushing unarmed protestors like bulls using force to control you. Some songs you should check out now for your rage binge, Darkness of greed, Sleep now in the fire, Calm like a bomb, No Shelter, Guerilla Radio, Freedom. Know your enemy, The Ghost of Tom Joad, Year of tha Boomerang
Down Rodeo definitely.

Killing in the Name of:
You won’t need the lyrics and it’s the only one I’d recommend live
If you like Rage Against the Machine, you might like the band Body Count. Especially their album Bloodlust.
Genovevo De La O was a General in the Mexican Revolution. He was a solid soldier and a great fighter who won many battles for the liberation of Mexico. Also he was one of the main reasons the Zapatista movement continued to fight after Zapata was murdered. Small role, big impact kinda guy.
I just learned this after being a rage fan for years. Thank you
He was talking about De la Hoya
You did it justice by looking at the words not just vibing. 99% of reactors just rock out, that’s cool but you absorbed all the layers. Props 👍
Appreciate that 💯💯
This comment deserves another shout out
Yeah especially since its all about the message with ratm
That's the point, and the beat is a plus the youngins dont know what's up im happy he did this justice as well.
Know Your Enemy..... next
Lyrics video are a must!
Know Your Enemy, Wake Up, Down Rodeo, Take the Power Back, Sleep Now in the Fire.... it really doesnt matter, they are all bangers 🤘
Driving while listening to this song is daaaangerous cuz every time the chorus comes around I can’t stop myself from headbanging….
The chorus is criticizing Republicans for preaching family values but loving guns and war.
I'm not even close to republican (or any affiliation) but Zack spits facts about ANY politician that preaches family first and loves that war lobby money
I agree it is not a both sides issue on the gun lobby though, this is mostly Rs and "they will take your guns" 2nd amendment scare tactics
Lobbying is legal bribery on a massive scale that affects everyone. Mostly negatively, about 99%
You stupid ? Ain't no difference fool ..you buying into the phony two party paradigm ? They two wings on the same bird flying in one direction and that's against us ...wake the f up
Its deeper than that.. its military recruitment sending your kids to die for bs political reason knowing their going to die .. rally around your family … with a pocket full of shellllls. Thats done by all parties ….
Not just Republicans, lol. They hated Bill Clinton and centrist Democrats too.
I mean, modern Republicans are a whole different level of awful, but Rage were not fans of the old school Tough on Crime, Big Business Democrats of the 90s by any measure.
It’s not just republicans…it’s politicians…it’s America that rallies around the family with a pocket full of shells
Rage is the most important band in the last 40 years, bar none
Another band that really imo is on par with rage against the machine with shedding light on very pertinent issues is System of a Down.
You are just of the few that react in an intelligent way to Rage Against the Machine. Being educated makes the difference. Great job bro…
Wth? So a drop out just can't understand these straight up lyrics?? LOL please
@@susiejo143 check out most of the reactions and you will be surprised. Most of them don’t even get it….
His flow is sick. Amen. 🙏
They don’t gotta bun the book they just remove ‘em.
Know your enemy, wake up, testify, sleep now in the fire, Mic check, pistol grimp pump, people of the sun, calm like a bomb, guerilla radio, i know thats a lot but all of them ARE BANGERS
When a veteran dies in combat, they have a color guard at the funeral for a 21 gun salute. After, they pick up the shells and give the spent shells to the family. I know, I have two.
Same ❤
I’ve always assumed “rally round the family, pocket full of shells” was first in reference to the nursery rhyme “ring around the rosie, pocket full of posies”, as well as highlighting the tendency for folks to take pride in showing force as a sense of identity, and celebrating it.
My kid knew “pocket full of shells” when he was two 😂 so it kinda was a nursery rhyme
Woah!
The scratching was done on the guitar those weren't turntables
yep, Morello using the pickup switch on the guitar like a crossfade. Love that style. He basically invented it and nobody else really does it
Thats was make them badass af
@@LovelyBrownBear-cm4juthat's the truth
Listening to Rage for 25 years and they never get old- still relevant today as ever, never sold out their principles
Hell yea, my riot boys. Fighting the system was our style with mosh pits and all. So sad most people never understood why we fought or rioted. RIP Rodney King
I'm glad they existed.. wish they still did, but their music is forever
(Stock market) Bulls on (military) parade
De La O = mexican revolutionary and then governor of Morales
"Terror reigns"= both...Zach is a master of the double entendre (this is why everyone says to follow the lyrics)
"Rally round the Family, pocket full of shells" = I've heard this interpreted a few ways. The 2 most viable are either:
1: A diss on Republicans claiming to be the "party of family" while promoting war. Or
2: (My fave) a warning to the masses derived from the phrase, "go far enough left and you'll want your guns back"
"They don't gotta burn the books they just remove 'em" = burned or removed, the first books on that list are always politically far left.
There's also some bold iconography in the music video. (Notably a red flag on a greyscale scene of people climbing a hill)
Another solid reaction ✊🏽❤️
"Know you're enemy" or " "Take the power back" next please.
not northamerican and native english speaker but as far is i know see and read, bulls on parade also means "cops are comin" some kind of black panthers slang or somethin, sorry but i'm brazilian but that it's what i heard and make total sense based on RATM's and Zach's stories.
@JPindanga They have 3 major themes.
1: Calling out systemic racism and police brutality
2: Anti-imperialism and accurate history, and
3: Anti-capitalism.
With the context of the rest of the lyrics, this song is definitely in the anti-capitalist group.....but those 3 themes go hand in hand, and Zach loves the double entendre, so it's likely both.
In other songs, more directed at police (killing in the name, down rodeo) I would absolutely agree....but (stock market) bulls on (military) parade is an often overlooked metaphor, and the line "Weapons, not homes......" makes this about more than just cops coming.
Edit: Systemic racism, Imperialism, and Capitalism are the 3 evils in Martin Luther King jr.'s 1967 speech, "3 evils of society". Its a good listen
De la O could also refer to boxer Oscar de la Hoya, cause “droppin hits”
@@777luizo look up Genovevo De La O and "Zach de la Rocha + Zapata"
Definitely also referencing de la soul of which Zach is a fan. Man throwing doubles/triples at us. Such a slick wordsmith.
the layers on this lyricism is masterful
I can only have Big Respect and Love for Rage Against the Machine!🤘❤🤟
While I’m typing this during the last BULLS ON PARADE I’m shaking my entire body to the beat, it’s just SO HYPE
I'm 46 and when Rage was big my friends and I loved it just because it sounded awesome, the rebel nature etc.
Not long after I really listened to the words and message.
Rage woke up a young white boy living in a not so diverse area and created a future BLM supporter. I was in the streets peacfully protesting in Portland while getting maced and at the same time watching the news saying how violent we were being.
I was there, we were not violent.
Keep raging against the machine!
I will forever hold my fist in the air with respect.
“While arms warehouses fill up quick as the cells
Rally round the family, pocket full of shells….” Zack has the ability to be both vague and direct which makes his lyrics relevant when he wrote them, today and tomorrow… passionate lyricist paired with a legendary band = greatness!!
Digging your Rage reactions bro. As others have said, more of their songs you gotta check out are:
No Shelter
Know Your Enemy
Freedom
The entire 'weapons not food...line up to the mind cemetary...while the arms warehouses fill as quick as the cells' verse is as hard as any damn thing anyone ever rapped.
The best reaction to this song.
Appreciate that💪🏽💪🏽
Really enjoyed the time you took breaking down these bars. Explication A+
Glad you enjoyed it!👍🏽
He says there used to be lines to library and now they're in a mind's cemetery. Meaning people don't want to read and learn no more. All their mind takes in is the mindless crap they want you to watch on tv. Creating a mind's cemetery. At least that's how I took it.
Bro your lyric analysis on point as f*** and quick with it too. Damn bro
...While arms warehouses fill as quick as the [prison] cells.
Did you know America has arms warehouses all over the world. But their biggest one, by far, is in Israel.
Do you know how quickly the prison cells of Israel, fill?
;)
The song 'Killing in the Name' was a direct response to the Rodney King beating. That's my favorite Rage Against the Machine song.
FTB realizing Zack is high on his top 3 is everything...
WE NEED THIS RIGHT NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm so obsessed with how much you focus and get from the lyrics of songs. Big time new fan!
Your lyric analysis is great man. Heard this song probably a 1000 times but I’m learning stuff. Btw, I know you love guitarists. You’re hearing Tom Morello. Probably the most inventive guitarist in 30 years. All that scratching is from his guitar. He’s sick
Amazing reacts! You get the point really fast. Nice to see a smart guy explaining the lyrics so perfect! Plz, do more RATM!
Great reaction Bro👊 the scratch you here that's Tom Morello on the guitar🙌
Very under rated guitar legend!!!!
Another banger 🔥. You nailed this reaction, my guy!
This reaction made me a fan I’m glad you broke it down
Love your work mate! 👌🤟
That 'scratching'..is not on a turntable, he's doing that on a guitar 😉
It's funny... I always knew what they ULTIMATELY stood for but never really analyzed each song... you're doing a helluva job, man! You GET it!!! I absolutely love your point of view! These songs are just as relevant today as they were back then... and probably since the dawn of time to be honest... 🤔❤
If someone else explained, I missed it. De la O refers to Mexican revolutionary and eventual guerilla general, Genovevo de la O, who fought for the rights of Mexican peasants. I think that sheds more light on the context of what ZDLR is expressing.
Hey, that scratchin’ in the middle was Tom Morillo on the guitar making it sound like scratchin’.
The fact that he's realizing what's going on in Florida with the books... and my boy Zach was rapping about it nearly 30 years ago...
Love your analysis.
Five sided fist-a-gon ✊🏽
Great reaction. These lyrics hit so hard.
I really like your reaction! Great breaking down the lyrics 👏 👏🔥
Awesome thank you!
Listening to RATM since 92, I fuckin love that they're so timeless that young lads are doing these vids hearing them for the 1st time. Let's not get it twisted, he spits bars on a level of KRS 1. Hip hop doesn't give Zach de la Rocha the respect he deserves for spitting killa bars
Take the power back, know your enemy, lyric video please. Great reaction
Zack tackles alot of subject matter in his lyrics, One of the reasons I love Rage.
What are you? Retarded?
I believe he’s referencing Oscar De la Hoya? I
Could be wrong but that’s what I been telling myself that since 94…. Love watching people discover their music, it makes me re-live the experience again!❤
He was right de la O is a historical figure.
Great video❤
A little conversion for you - "they rally round the family, with a pocket full of shells" - 'They' are the police and authorities 'rally round the family' the family is people in charge of society, tradition, old money, 'with a pocket full of shells' refers to the authorities reserving the right to violence for themselves, they kill at will and justify it later, 'Bulls on Parade' is a reference to the columns of black police SUV's that rolled through the neighbourhood when they raided somewhere...
I always wondered where the title of the song stems from. Thanks. In addition I think that the "rally 'round" line also gives me the sentiment that "they" ("The authorities") can use weapons and arms in small numbers to rally and control the masses. It brings to mind a literal un armed family being gathered at gunpoint. It can fit so many actual scenarios regardless of time or culture. A reference to a sad truth.
This line always makes me think of how politicians will make themselves out as family oriented people with good values and family views, literally they “Rally round the family” then their actions are completely contrary to that with wars, bombing, terror propaganda etc.. “ The pocket full of shells” … So they say one thing to get in office then do the exact opposite.
We feed the war machine while we rage against the machine
You gotta do Know Your Enemy, Bullet in your head, Freedom, Sleep Now in the Fire, Guerrilla Radio, Renegades of Funk... jezz RATM is a must for every black latinamerican african etc
U gotta listen to “DOWN RODEO”
Watch the video. The scratching was tom morellos genius on a guitar. You see how he scratches the guitar strings. Amazing. Every video, watch for him. Find video w lyrics
If you know the truth, you have a responsibility to make it known.
Vietnow, People of the Sun, Know Your Enemy, Calm Like a Bomb... Can I donate to hear those? 😂 Great reaction and analysis 🤘
“Voice Of The Voiceless;” “The Ghost Of Tom Joad” (cover of Bruce Springsteen;) “Testify;” “No Shelter;” “Freedom;” “Year Of The Boomerang.”
Also, checkout Saul Williams’ “Act III Scene 2 (Shakespeare)” feat. Zack De La Rocha. And, I’ll recommend Saul Williams’ cover of “Sunday Bloody Sunday” feat. Trent Reznor (NIN.)
Genovevo de la O was a fighter in the Mexican Revolution.
school book bans in the 2022-2023 school year, and found 3,362 book bans affecting 1,557 unique titles, with more than 40% of the bans occurring in Florida.
Siempre rage . Gracias por escuchar ❤😊
Still sounds fresh and relevant.
Rally round the family with a pocket full of shells, referencing the military industrial complex and how politicians will “rally” round “family values” all the while waging war, making weapons of mass destruction, sending young men off to war etc etc.
You just need to remember that what he says in the lyrics is simply an expression of class-consciousness. The government they are referring to is the one that defends the bourgeoisie, but what we need is a government that protects us, created by us, the working classes in power! Venceremos!
RATM has been spitting truth for decades! Folk ignored them to all our peril.
Thanks for doing this reaction your reaction/analysis made my day.
My favorite Rage song is "Renegades of funk." It's an amazing cover and the official music video is like a three minute time line of some of the all time great influencers, in terms of music, politics and human rights.
Keep up the great content.
great vibes on your reaction man
upvote just for the reaction to a great song... love the start
“De la O” is a reference to Genovevo de la O. Who was a general in the guerrilla force, called the 'Liberation Army of the South'.
These songs have been relevant, are relevant, and will continue to be relevant as long as people are complacent and money equals power. Fire reaction!
I'm so fucking happy you're enjoyong RATM! Check know your enemy next - lyrically. Regards from Poland. All the best!
I'm not sure we'll ever see another Legit MC choose to join a rock/Metal band. Hes not a rock singer who can rap he's a True MC who chose to front a metal band
Best reaction i have seen so fare
For the longest time I thought he was saying De La Soul, but he's actually talking about a Mexican revolutionary, Zapatista.
The lyrics are very important but the visual iconography they use in the videos is also important
You read this song really well
Seriously, he understood this better than my friend who's loved this song for 30 years
It's almost like he read Genius before recording...
If Miss Ruby Bridges is strong enough to suffer through being the first black child in an all white school, having ADULTS throw stuff at her and call her horrible names…… then YOUR child is strong enough to learn about it!!!!!!
You should really check out some interviews with Zack. He is incredibly articulate and quite soft spoken. He’s got the facts and the knowledge to back up what he’s talking about out, so he’s calm and cool. Different from his on stage persona.
Okay so I'm watching this right now I've never seen this CZcamsr before and this guy's reading these lyrics as if it's modern day music this band is well over 25 years old man I was a big fan of them growing up in the 90s I'm 38 now I still love them and yeah I like to see his reactions I might subscribe
As somebody who lives in Florida as well, and just a fan of truth as a real thing, absolutely insane what they're doing in schools down here.
Denzel Curry did a great cover of this, and added a verse.

For fans of this song, check out Drumeo’s video of a drummer hearing this song for the first time (without the drum track) and giving their own interpretation of how they think the drums sound for the song. It’s fucking epic.
You missed the line, just after book removal
“Warehouses fill as quick as the cell”
With thought provoking lyrics like this , the mind is absorbing the previous line to even hear the next
Thanks for the content
Good job breaking down the meaning fella. Excellent how I personally interpret Zack's words.
Watch them live at Findbury park….they freak’n make the whole area shake like a mf!
Also, Tom Morello is a pretty unique guitarist as well.
"de la O" as in Oscar De La Hoya. "Dropping hits" as in Olympic Gold -medal winning and successful professional boxer. Dual American-Mexican citizen who was extremely important for both cultures in the 80s & 90s (and beyond, really).
Lol no it's not he is talking about the Mexican revolutionary genevevo de la o
In my opinion they’re saying “they rally around the family with a pocket full of shells” is talking about how politicians talk about family values but enact policies of violence worldwide and continually.
Great review!
I agree, 100% bull jive indeed.
Freedom or Bullet in the head Live at Woodstock 99
What we need is
Rage Against the Machine screaming
"Dont believe what you read, not always what you see"
The poor starve and bleed
The rich succeed off greed
I'm famished, but never eat the lies they feed.
Played bass on this in 1999. Wild
brother what
The Actual lyric is De La Soul not De La O, De La Souls is a rap group you might like to check out if you arent familiar.
Did a good job analyzing these lyrics
The “de la O” character is a reference to Genovevo de la O who was a general in the guerrilla force called the Liberation Army of the South. Zac was VERY political. Sad that this was in the 90s and applied then and thirty years later... Still truth. Truth is eternal!
Dude. You got so many great songs ahead of you. I love Bulls on Parade and it has some depth, but there are a few other songs that hit even harder lyrically.
