Here I am 11 years later same old vacuum and believe it or not this dc 17 dyson still works great for us..it really is all about keeping the maintenance up regularly on it. I actually found my on the side of the road in my neighborhood sitting with trash cans, took it home and took it apart every single piece one by one, made it work perfectly, it only had a broken 5$ belt.

I wanted to an aside. I use my Dyson everyday and I've had this Dyson for well over 12 years - it is in excellent condition because I take care of it, keep it clean, and clean the filters like you suggest. I find Abandoned Dysons from time to time that are beaten up, they're not very hard to bring back to life and if taken care of will last a very long time. Thank you for the great advice!

Thank you very much for this video! I didn't realize until I watched it that the motor pulley was toothed. Cleaned all the carpet off of it and all is well. Saved me a repair bill and was easy to do with your help.

THANK YOU!!! THANK YOU!!!! THANK YOU!!!! You have no idea how much your video helped my husband and me. I won't bore you with specifics, but we are older and have encountered many health issues, which affected our finances, etc. When our Dyson broke, not only not having a repair shop anywhere near our area, but we were worried about the cost. Thanks to your video, between the two of us, we fixed it! God bless you!!!!!!!!!!!!!

THANK YOU!!! I fixed my dyson by your video. That noise was horrendous, and I was regretting buying the vaccum, just because i felt I wasted the money! However, you helped renewed my faith back in my dyson, and im SOOOOOO EXCITED I didn't loose all that money! THANKS AGAIN!

Excellent and extremely helpful. I had picked up a small piece of wire which got wrapped around the gear. Your instruction made it easy to disassemble the unit, clean it and remove that piece of wire. The vacuum is quite as ever now and just like new.

You made fixing the dyson so EASY! I have the same problem with that horid noise. I had already cleaned out the hair on the bottom but did not remove the rubbery thing to clean that area. Maybe thats why the noise is still there. Will try that next! Thanks so much!

Thank you for this video and glad your so down to earth about it. :-)
I have 5 huskies, so my Dyson gets quite the work out and u was taking it in to be serviced, I'm glad I can do all this on my own.
if you give your pets a can of plain sardines in oil once a week, it will cut back on the shedding a lot... I only have to vacuum once a week. I've been giving my pets sardines for 23 yrs and swear by them :-) they are only $1 a can.

I wanted to thank you for this video. It really solved our problem with the DC17. Just a note to others who might be using this excellent program, when you change the belt also clean the driving gear assemble. When I changed mine, I found a number of teeth clogged with the remains of the previous belt. AJ

Not sure what tube you are referring to. Making a guess that it is the clear accordion hose (2:49 on video) you see underneath on the floor side of the vacuum. It just press fits back onto the hole next to the wheel. Clean both sides well to remove dust, or it may fall off again.

Thank you so much! I was about to give up on my DC17 when I found your video. I didn't know how you could remove the beater bar, and once I did, I found that the belt's "teeth" are worn down in one spot causing it to slip & making the grinding noise when the brush is rotating. All I need is a replacement belt & it should be good as new!

My gear clogs up w/ dog hair too and Dyson told me to get a new belt, but like you, I dont think that will solve the problem. I do spray my carpet w/ static guard to release the static and it helps reduce the number of times I have to clean the gear out... and sometimes Fresh'N Clean® Odor Plus Hair & Allergen Remover Carpet Foam to release static and smells way better than static guard.- though is hard to find, the upholstery spray is easier to find, and I use that on the carpet too

Good video. While you have the beater bar out, remove the end caps, you will find fluff in there as well. Also, I remove the filter above the canister and I wash the whole lot, inside and out and all those little holes. You need to dry it for 24 hours.

At 6:08 you are putting the roller bar back. If you look closely there are 2 grooved slots. I never noticed before (mine were clogged with lint). After you assemble the beater bar and put everything but the sole plate on look at those slots. There is about a 1/4" gap big enough for hair to snag on that static charged rubber belt and clog it all over again. I haven't found what is supposed to go in the slots, but it seems if there were a guard it would be perfect. (my cheaper dyson has a plastic guard formed to the sole plate and vac itself.) Any ideas? BTW,(do this outside) if you take off the belt then engage the belt motor you can lightly (softly as to not damage the grooves) apply a butter knife to the tightly matted hair around the little belt driver it turns the hair to dust in a matter of seconds, no more tweezers and scissors. (I have to do this task once a week so I found a faster way.)

I had a loud noise coming from there and took off the beater bar to find a roller (similar but larger than those in the bottom plate) loose in that compartment. Would you tell us how to open that compartment so that I, and anyone else, can put it back together please?

My DC17 was making terrible noises. I took the beater bar out and noticed a belt tensioner had come out. It's a round cylinder that snaps in near the small belt pulley. I put it back in and the noise is gone, but unfortunately it came out again. I think the mount for this part is worn. Any ideas. My feeling is this is going to have to be taken in for service.
I didn't see this belt tensioner in your vacuum thouhg. ???

Why not just buy a vacuum that actually works. The Simplicity tandem air series will outclean any vacuum ever made and they are made in America. Dyson is nothing but a con man. He is the one that had the first bagless, The Fantom. The company went belly up because all the machines were returned and broke down. Simplicity comes with a lifetime guaranteed belt and will take everything out of your rugs including cleaning the floor underneath. Good old American ingenuity.
