however, it IS sexist when your only basis for such argument is "they're pandering to the female demographic." or "Disney's gone woke" which is an argument that I see constantly and any time I see the word WOKE in fcking film discourse, my soul DIES a little. I hate that that word exists because it makes film discussion not fun anymore. Like the days of actually TALKING about film are fcking GONE. It's all just mindless arguing now. OR even worse people will tell you "you're overthinking it." for analyzing a film. Honey no that's what MEDIA LITERACY IS and it's a very important skill to have at that.

It’s not poorly written. Luke had the same power boost in Empire Strikes back. It wasn’t till after the fact that books and other stories filled in the blanks explaining how Luke achieved the boost. But before any of that existed Luke miraculously became Jedi Knight strong. So stop complaining. There are plot holes and plot armor all over Lucas canon.

We called out how bizarre and sudden Palpatine's return as the overall villain was instead of Snoke who ended up being a glorified meat puppet. We called out how pointless Captain Phasma was, a FEMALE antagonist, who got hyped up but was ultimately irrelevant. Main characters in each trilogy:
    EP1:
    - Anakin as a slave is good at podracing, and therefore a good pilot.
    - Luke is a villager who has been flying for years in ships and is therefore a good pilot,
    - Rey who is a scrapper is able to mindcontrol a stormtrooper, beat kylo ren, sith apprentice in 1on1 sabercombat, AND in the force.
    EP2:
    - Anakin is a trained jedi knight and gets bitchslapped by dooku a sith apprentice because of his lack of skill and arrogance.
    - Luke fails to finish WITH YODA his training and cant lift more than 2 rocks, gets bitchslapped by vader.
    - Rey trains with a broken luke who refuses to train her properly, she goes on to beat a roomful of redrobes, and once again be toe to toe with kylo.
    EP3:
    - Anakin now a masterful jedi knight and member of the council beats dooku, but later gets bitchslapped by obiwan his master because he still has lessons to learn,
    - Luke who has now pretty much finished his training is finally able to stand toe to toe with vader, sith apprentice, yet still wins because of his heart, not his power, also gets bitchslapped by the emperor,
    - Rey who has trained a little more, under the supervision of leia who didnt finish her training, is now able to grab a ship and out of nowhere obliterate it with lightning which usually takes ages to learn from a sith master, not as instinct, but she can also defeat palpatine, something luke was not able to do whatsoever after YEARS of training and supervision from yoda.
All three characters had bloodlines with huge potential. Luke and Anakin with arguably more potential, yet rey faces no challenges pertaining to her skills in the force, but only challenges in her emotions.

The part that kills me the most, aside from the fact that her skills essentially minimize the importance of any other characters (both prior to the sequels and in the sequels...they did my boy Finn dirty), is the fact that every action, decision, behavior, and emotion that Rey displays screams "Dark Side" in any other Star Wars media. She is impulsive, aggressive, somewhat fearful of both injury and loss, and gets angry quickly. She doesn't get the answers she wants from Luke and decides to start swinging lightsabers with him. Just take what the Jedi Council says of Anakin in The Phantom Menace, or what Yoda and Obi-wan say to Luke in the OT. Rey would be straight up glowing red by TRoS if the rules of the Star Wars universe and the Force actually applied to her.

Sorry for the length: it’s aggravating when people bring up that Luke was somehow a Mary Sue. He needed Han’s help to blow up the first death star and All he had to do with the force was nudge the torpedoes. That was a small step in his growth with the force. He didn’t all of a sudden know how to fly, know how to fight with a light saber, and know how to mind trick people with the force. In empire, he could barely get his light saber from the snow. He was then trained by Yoda, but still got his butt kicked by Vader. And then, in return of the Jedi, he still lost to his father and the emperor. He had to appeal to his father’s humanity. he didn’t just have special skills because “reasons” mentioned in the novelization.

TRUTH - Luke would of died in Star Wars had it not been for Han Solo. Then he trained for awhile with Yoda and STILL got his ass (and hand) handed to him. THEN THEN as a "master" he got captured by Ewoks... EWOKS... and though he got the best of Darth Vader (and I would argue that Vader was not trying to kill Luke at all), the Emperor STILL beat his ass and he needed Vader to save him.... NO... As an added detail about Anakin piloting the N-1 Starfighter in Episode 1, nearly everything he did while in the cockpit was either by mistake or by giving control over to R2. When he got in the ship, he was hitting random buttons and stuff trying to figure out how to shoot at the the destroyer droids. Once he was inside of the blockade ship, he blew up the reactor purely on accident while trying to defend himself from encroaching battle droids. Even then he barely escaped. He didn't just jump in the ship, and was like, eh capital ship, piece of cake. It was mostly luck.

That's the problem here. The most vocal part of any fandom is usually a small minority, and they get lumped into the normal fans who just want good stories and characters. And you can blame Mike Stoklasa and the rest of the Red Letter Media/Boba Fett pajama wearing OT fanboys. A grownass man can't figure out who the villain is of Menace, yet claims anyone who likes the PT has the maturity of a baby.
They criticized George until he sold it to Disney. Then, they got more Star Wars, and it ultimately ended up being bad. But NOW, they have to keep up the hate for George and can never admit they were wrong, that Star Wars WAS better under George, because then they would lose all their fans, which were made out of hate.
These people keep hating because hating is what got them here. They will lose any "credibility" and their "fans" if they change their viewpoint or admit they were wrong.
It's why I still watch people like Jeremy Jahns, who may have a bad take here and there, but he's willing to change his opinion if he feels like something significant enough opened his eyes to what he was missing.
And even if you disagree with his takes, he won't make you feel insulted for it. He'll just come in, say his opinion, why he thinks it, thanks you for listening, and leaves. So, you know, shout out to Jeremy.

I'm a Girl, and when The Force Awake came out, I was excited about a female Jedi (Not that I'm saying there had never been any before Rey.), and the first movie was fine. It had flaws and was clearly not written well, but at the time, I wasn't bothered by it and was excited to see Luke again and see him train Rey in the next film. But of course, we all knew what happened in the next film. I never bothered watching 9th movie after that.
The sad part is that Disney not only ruined the old characters, but I feel like they ruined their new ones, too. The new characters had potential, but Disney clearly didn't know what to do with them and had no goal set in mind for the plot for their characters to reach, so they kept changing their minds every 5 minutes. They ruined the old characters, and then writing Rey poorly made people hate Rey, not Sexism.
I also really hate they killed off the whole Skywalker line.

Just as a reminder, Anakin actually DID perform pod racing prior to when Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan visited him and his mom. He mentioned how there was a huge prize at the end of the race that could be used to pay repairs for the hyperdrive on the royal Naboo starship. Shmi said how dangerous it was and Qui-Gon even said you need light speed reactions as well to compete. Very fast, very dangerous. Also, Anakin built his pod racer from scratch, so of course he would know the ins and outs on how it works. He competed and won against some of the fastest and best pod racers in the galaxy(just that one time), so of course he would be pretty gifted enough to pilot a starfighter. (btw, he crashed it in the hanger of the Lucrehulk and made his star fighter’s systems over heat on him. I think R2 helped him out of that pickle. Plus he flew into the space battle while still on autopilot. In my opinion, because he was still a kid and he didn’t know anything that he was doing, he didn’t force anything or any outcome. He was just trying not to die. Which allowed the Force to guide his actions unbeknownst to him. Because honestly it would be pretty stupid of the force to literally create the answer to the dark side only to have it be destroyed in a predicament it placed him in.) So yeah, Anakin is the main hero, but he’s a flawed and imperfect. This is a story about the tragedy and redemption of a hero. Rey is just some typical stuff you would predict would happen in Encanto. The sequel trilogy contains the thought process of a generic isekai story. No poetry, it doesn’t rhyme.😏

The thing that kills me is that Rey had potential in TFA to be a decent character. She was actually kinda likable barring her OP Force powers. She was a nobody from some desert planet who was used to being alone, but once she became your friend, she was loyal and cared. She was rough around the edges and used to reacting on gut instinct, all things that could be used as developmental points later in the series. It was like, when TLJ dropped, they just dumped all of her likable traits out the window: she runs off on all of her friends for some dude who essentially mentally assaulted her in the first movie, who killed her father-figure, and who almost killed her best friend. Then she spends ROS being an absolutely unlikable jerk, running off on her friends again, and generally being unlikable and OP as hell and they also shoehorned her in as being a Palpatine because having her just be a nobody was too boring for whoever was directing the scriptwriters. She's a textbook Mary Sue, and it baffles me how Disney keeps buckling down on it being the viewers who are wrong instead of just taking the L and admitting that changing directors and writers mid-series was a mistake.

Plenty of strong female characters to choose from, such as Mara Jade and Luke and Leia's offspring. Instead, the clowns at Disney gave us three movies that don't make any sense. With Ahsoka, we saw her struggle AND learn from Anakin. Kylo Ren had tons of training in fighting and using the force. Rey picks up a light saber and defeats him with no training? THESE ARE THE REASONS the sequels sucked so bad, and it has nothing to do with misogyny.

Mega corporations like Disney use woke ideology and identity politics to pander to random sjws as opposed the actual Star Wars fans, and in turn they don’t focus on story or narrative.
    Rather
”Character has to be powerful because they are under represented or it would be sexist to not have said character be ultra badass and female… nor can it be a straight white male cause we’ve had enough of those. so let’s trash the main character of the saga ”… they do this When story should be prioritized.

now star wars is a Woke girls club that most people shit on because it focuses on identity politics and pandering.

From Kris S. Channel Owner/Manager: I like your break down of this, which to me seems reasonably intellectually sociological and I respect your opinions though have some different ideas too. I think the concept of Rey's Force connection makes a limited amount of sense due to her interaction with Anakin's Lightsaber and visions in the first movie, which I believe unlocked her Force potential, by way of the Kyber crystal's connection to the Force. These crystals of course, also contain Force imprints of their users/owner/wielders. This however does not account for here vision of seeing Ben Solo/Kylo Ren's original turn to the Dark Side, as it is possible that the Skywalker Lightsaber was not present during these events. The only thing about her vision that makes any sense is, the fact that she saw pieces of Luke's duel on Bespin or at least one of the locations involved and heard Obi-wan's voice, who I theorized after ROTS/Musafar, altered the saber's blade color to cyan/bright-light-blue from Indigo Blue. What also stretches the lore with her connection to the Force is, naturally being able to reverse Kylo's Force mind probing, unless of course the interrogation happens after she does the mind-trick on the Stormtrooper. This usually slips my mind though, in terms of how I remember Force Awakens.

At this point, they just want to get passionate fans riled up on the internet to paint their narrative. For Luke’s X-Wing run, he already had prior experience running canyons on Tatoonie and even when he trusted the force, the only thing that saved him from being blasted away by a more experienced and powerful Vader was Han coming to the rescue. Regardless of if Rey’s epiphany helped her connect with the force, she was not skilled enough to beat Kylo at that point in time and would’ve needed a bail out.

  • @KillamriX98

The scenes in ANH that justify Luke's abilities are so small and short. It's one scene on the Falcon of Luke training with the laser drone, and then him briefly talking about his experience flying a T-16 and shooting at the local wildlife. And we accept that, because nothing contradicts it and we know the movie has limited runtime. It's just enough to allow Luke to make his one miracle shot with the proton torpedoes, because in the end, that was Luke's only major accomplishment in ANH. Everything else he had help from Obi-Wan or Han... and Obi-Wan still technically helped with that shot, lol.
Meanwhile Rey doesn't even have that. She has no scenes or dialogue setting precedent for her piloting a whole ass Corellian Freighter, and a notoriously finicky and modified one at that, she has no scenes of her learning to use the force or a lightsaber, and then she somehow jumps all the way to fighting a trained Dark Jedi and winning in her first outing. Luke never pulled that level of bs in his first outing, and then even AFTER MORE TRAINING he still loses to Darth Vader. I'd argue Vader plays the same basic role Kylo Ren does in the sequels, being the subordinate to a greater evil that the main character later redeems... but Rey beats Ren at every turn making him a joke. The bar was set so low and they still tripped over it.
Edit: Oh, and lets talk about Anakin. The autopilot got Anakin like 50% of the way to the Core Ship. It was a mixture of luck and his ability with the force that got him into the ship. He mostly fumbled his way to victory. Also he had R2 with him. He was not dog-fighting, he was just doing his best to survive and happened to fly into the ship and bullseye the main reactor. Is it all a little silly? Yes, but he at least had proficiency operating a high-speed vehicle and it culminated in nothing grander than what Luke did in ANH. It's like poetry, it rhymes. He was basically passively training his instincts with the force by doing something as intense as pod racing, and since his connection to it was in a tier of its own to begin with... we can accept this one thing.
Again, it's still a bit silly, but it's not as egregious as the multiple instances of BS Rey continually pulled out of her ass every step of the way in her debut film. Flying the Falacon, fixing the Falcon, speaking Wookie, resisting Ren's mind probe (this in isolation would have been fine, but... it's not an isolated event), mind controlling a Stormtrooper, using the force to grab the lightsaber, not immediately getting her ass beat by Ren... and then BEATING REN. None of these things have precedent or set-up IN THE MOVIE to explain how the actual fk she can do all that.
As for the podracing itself, the race Anakin won wasn't his first. He'd done it before and lost. His ability to do it is set up by dialogue and explained by his connection to the force. Any sufficiently powerful force user could do the same with a little training.
It really doesn't take much, but they wanted to speedrun Rey being powerful and chose to do it in the sloppiest, most unsatisfying way imaginable.

LONG RANT: When people ask me why I hate the sequels and why I have a gripe with Rey, I just show them Kreia and Meetra. Honestly, I think Rey was a great potential character but the Mary Sue stuff that happened in the sequel trilogy ruined her. Not to mention to add salt to the wound she is a Palpatine. Anakin had a life of tragedy, being a slave in his childhood, rejected by the Jedi order, and becoming a slave to Palpatine as Vader. Anakin saw his son tortured by his master who was trying to make Luke into his next slave apprentice, Anakin did what most fathers would do and saved his kid and redeemed himself. Then Luke and Leia live executing their purposes, the Sequel trilogy happens, and those two and Kylo Ren die, all pure-blood Skywalkers. Rey who is PALPATINE'S Granddaughter takes the name of Skywalker and it is infuriating because the legit Skywalker family literally dies from tragedy and constant bondage to Palptines. I don't care if Rey is on the light side the whole thing is just horrible to shit on a family who overcame impossible odds to have such an ending. Ruining legacy characters to uplift others is the biggest mistake Disney SW has made in my opinion. Not to mention anything they could've done with Rey to make her unique was not optimized or wasted, it is clear that she is more competent with a staff than a lightsaber yet her first original lightsaber is a single blade, which would have been able a perfect opportunity to show a double-bladed nonred lightsaber, which would have given her identity.
