As an Anthropologist, I found this video truly enlightening. I admit I was about to stop watching when she mentioned Merecedes Benz fashion week and Mexico’s former first lady and her daughters, I thought I was just another silly video. I was brushing my teeth and that was the reason why I didn’t stop the video, then minute after minute it revealed an amazing and accurate description of Mexico City’s urban tribes. Well done. If one day Mexico collapses, as it happened to some of its prehispanic societies, this video would be a true archeological treasure, it would save art historians many years of work, and would expose a real vision of the social complexities of the Mexican society back in 2017.
Hailey is hands down one of the best hosts for shows like this she really talks to everyone she doesn't act like shes in a zoo. I hope she gets to continue hosting shows like this cause she is Amazing.

As a mexican living in the mexico city metropolitan area, this documentary did make a lot of justice on showcasing capitalist mexican urban culture .It's very accurate to my own experiences seeing social groups and minorities interacting through the lens of my upper middle/working class upbringing. Really like how they cared to report on THE actual culture. Good job!

I’m 30 and still am lmao 🤣 I’m former nothing besides being a mix between a goth, emo and hippy and have been since I was younger. It’s a lifestyle and not something we just get out of if you enjoy the styles and scene. That’s just me though. I hate going by labels because it depends on my mood that determines what I wear or what I wanna be that day.

I’ve been to Paris, Rome, Barcelona, Madrid, New York, Miami, L.A., Buenos Aires and Mexico City. And Mexico Coty fashion is so unique they really push style and art to the next level.

I too have explored many major cities and lived in a few - I have never experienced the beauty, complexity and incredible array of creativity as I saw in Mexico City.
im living in mexico city (formerly in socal) and i can easily say without a doubt, mexico city has some of the most unique and bold fashion i've ever seen in my life. people down here are SO unafraid to wear literally whatever. brands don't matter, replicas don't matter, nobody gives a shit. people are just freely themselves, and i mean REALLY themselves. the confidence is unrivaled.
PS.. this video was uploaded in 2017.. i only wish they could do a new video on the current state of fashion in mexico city in 2024. it's insane.

you gotta check out the mexican goth scene. mexican goths are perfect, pre-mall goth 80s style goths. its like i returned to highschool. at their events they even play my teenage playlist. warms my cold dead heart
I been in the Goth/Industrial scene since 84'. Im in LA/Hollywood and the Mexican Goth scene both here in LA and in Mexico is well loved. Their love of Robert Smith and Morrissey has always been a gateway drug to conversation when Ive visited Mexico and run into Goths there.

I know this is an older documentary but it’s still fantastic regardless. Hailey did a great job not only connecting with but understanding the people living Mexico’s truth and not this fictionalized version perpetuated by US media and politicians. No Mexico isn’t perfect. But it has a lot more in the form of beauty and culture than many people outside its borders would give it credit for.
I'm American from the States and was into the Punk scene in my high school days back in Washington, DC. Back then, I stood out being black in what was mostly the White kids in the scene at the time. My black friends just didn't understand me or why. But, I didn't really care one bit. I'm 58 now, but it was like a safe community for me at the time. My parents didn't get it but accepted it and my wild friends. They loved her. I moved to Mexico a few years ago and had no idea this was so heavy here. This whole program was for me, educational and so well done. You have a natural charisma that makes people open up to you. Keep up the good work!
Know what you are talking about. As a 59 y.o. Black man, I went through the same thing in the early 80's being into punk and other alternative scenes.
I was just a misfit white kid , late 70s and early 80s in school , loved the whole scene ...everyone got along at punk shows ..i guess I was still a misfit but by my own choice ...it really made my teen years memorable
Best kept secret: the punk scene has always been mellow and accepting of weirdos like me. Don't tell anybody!

This was beautifully done. Hailey is a complete professional and she has an authenticity that, clearly, anyone from any background recognizes and responds well to. Also, thank you to all who worked on this project for showing the many, many dimensions and layers that Mexico is comprised of- even in the segue music, you guys didn’t just use the “typical Mexican” music that most non-Mexican media tends to generically resort to.
A job well done. Even my mom, who is much more versed with our culture than I am, was drawn into this video as I watched and also gained new perspectives.

The lack of a condescending lense through all of it made it real but significantly vibrant and immersive, showing us a deep view of a contemporary Mexico City when majority of times international media coverage lacks about the layers of mexican society beyond simple stereotypes

@@alejandromoreno5056 Because it is highly likely that this documentary could have been looking at people's choices as bizarre oddities, as outsiders looking in, and the person interviewing could have had a cynical or sarcastic tone in her voice, but didn't, which would not have been respectful. And they had the respect to really look at the positive reason for the various "tribes" and how the unity among the tribe members and their mutual support of each other creates a positive purpose in that city. I would not have seen that if it were not pointed out. I found it incredibly respectful when it was highly possible to not be.

As a Mexican i can say that that part about the impunity of the rich is true. 2 People i know where killed by rich drunken teenage drivers, whithout any consecuences. One of them was a girl under 12 years old.

Every time i go there's a chilango proudly talking about "carrying a bag of smog" when traveling to other cities.
There's just too many cars,busses, trailers, motorcycles, bycicles, and crossing a street becomes quite stressful 😅

@@danieldelrancho5749 In the center of every city there's a subculture. Even at the more conservative ones (Nuevo León for ex.) there's a counterpart (a lot of LGBT+ communities are hosted there, from Drag Queens to furries).

True. All this dysfunctionality has colonial roots, but Mexico has had more than 200 years to fix it. It is its own baby, now. It seems it’s only gotten worse in some ways.

Rise against what government? Our current government is the most popular government Mexico has had since the 1940s, Amlo has the second or third highest approval rating in the world if you count Putin or not, why would people band towards a government almost 70% approve of?

What an interesting perspective into Mexican Culture. Back in my day (80's) in Los Angeles, all the genres hung out together. You could have metalheads, punks and goths in your crew. It's sad that it's so divided in Mexico.
Haley was phenomenal, she didn't act any different around all the subcultures. The Cholos looked like LA Crips. Those lowrider bikes are awesome! Bravo ❣️
Creo que es porque los movimientos se formaron de manera muy distinta en ambos países, a pesar de que técnicamente tienen el mismo nombre. La historia de la Ciudad de Mexico ha sido muy complicada y llena de conflicto desde su inicio. Lógico de la extensión urbana más grande de latinoamerica.
Many years ago, i was introduced to the 'freson' side of mexico. I was hitch hiking to Acapulco on my 25th bday and got picked up by this Syrian guy in a mercedes convertible. We spent the next 2 months bopping around mexico - flying back and forth to Mexico City for parties etc... The first thing that blew my mind was when there was a traffic jam because they were blasting to expand the road near Acapulco. Traffic was backed up for miles! My friend pulled to the side of the traffic and gunned it. When cops stopped him a few times, he swore at them and laid on the horn until they let him thru. They stopped the blasting until we were through. I was mortified, but that was just the introduction. I met a lot of singing legends, movie stars - Mexican and American, and tripped on the best acid ever while being towed on an innertube by a fast little boat. I'm tripping my balls off and there are dolphins jumping around me. One of these days, i'll write about it more.
That bicycle interview, that is so refreshing. Not many go on excursions like this even on a good weather day especially for an active conversation.
Interesting subject matter, especially the juxtaposition between the rich and poor right next to eachother.

I woke up to the amazing uniqueness of the difference cultures in Mexico when visiting an exhibit of nativity scenes at the community center in Coyoican - I recognized many of the different styles and materials but hadn’t realized they had grown out of distinct groups of people.
It was truest an experience seeing the nativity created from stoneware, to 2-D metal, woven from straw, beading and so many other traditions. I could spend years in Mexico City exploring the arts - and the magnificent archeological museum was mind blowing.

I grew up in the US with punks and goths in the 90s and emos after Y2K. Honestly, I cannot imagine those 3 groups not getting along. Here in the states, they are all a small divergence from the exact same thing.
its because its about the tribal aestheticism and not about what the things actually mean. dude was right when he said "they hate us because we are hardcore" because they actually live as themselves 24/7. punks in the US dont stop being punk to go to their factory jobs.
Being Mexican but Living in Canada since I was 6, I love seeing this part of my culture which I will never understand or even get to really see. Thankyou for spreading the wonders of Mexico to the world.

This documental means to be one of the better ever made from all clothing style in at least Mexico City, indeed because involve a little of the bigger clothing style and the deep history about what's made and relate to who. Awesome work, I've could say this need to be saved in a national museum. Different perspectives are what made us "to be". 11/10!

Haley,I love your style. Your presentation is totally unpretentious, and feels so real. This is the 3rd of your videos i watched today, and I subscribed so I can see the rest! For the record, I'm a 65 year old white man, and have lived with the punk mindset since the eighties.
As a Mexican is amazing how distant I feel from these urban subcultures even though I live in a city less than a hundred kilometers away. These urban sub cultures exist where I live but they are not as prominent or big as they are in the capital. It goes to show how how diverse the culture is in this country.
I LOVED this so much, for so many reasons. I am Portuguese but I live in California and have spent most of my adult life in Los Angeles and Fresno (now I live in the central coast). I visited Mexico several times, different states and cities, but my favorite was definitely Mexico City. It is wild! I have never seen such a mezcla of people, sights, sounds, and flavors, it's so unique, insane, wonderful, and exotic. It's packed with a whole lot of people!! - and they are often up all night. I remember going to a cafe after 1AM, on a week night, and it was so packed that there were no tables or chairs left. People were sitting on the sidewalk outside. It was hot, but not uncomfortable. People were wearing the most interesting fusion of styles, and they had their guitars, and some had matracas, flutes, and other small instruments, and they were playing music and smoking cigarettes. There is a rawness to the place. It feels brutal at times. I was scared to walk around at night, and even in the day, I was afraid to walk around alone. I find Mexican culture super interesting and mysterious. In a way, Mexicans and Portuguese are very similar, perhaps due to Catholicism and the Hispanic background of the discoveries and colonization, and of course, our language. But in other ways, we are so different. Mexican culture and history are fascinating, and the different groups/gangs of fashion expression are truly phenomenal in the way they embody the varied sentiments of the diverse population. You did such a great job with this report, and I have to say, you are very brave. It's almost like you infiltrated their world, and they were not all necessarily comfortable with that, so it took guts to dive in. ❤💚🤍💙 Saludos hermanos Mexicanos. ❤💀

@@jonathanweir6084yeah, right. I am not from Azores, a very beautiful place. And I didn't grow up in Portugal, though I was born there and I love my heritage. I have traveled a lot and lived in different countries. Mexico City is in a separate category. Over 22 million people in one massive chaotic city. It's tremendous.
Fascinating that the emos and punks hate eachother in mexico --- never seemed to be the case in America.. Actually, it seems like the two subcultures just produced a hybrid: Called the Scene Kids

I don't know if it's the same or similar in other places, but here in Mexico, a lot of "true fans" of something tend to be the gatekeeper kind of fans, especially when it comes to music like rock (punk or metal, mainly). If you don't like the same genre as them, you're looked down upon by "trues". If you like the genre but listen to "mainstream" bands, you're looked down upon by "trues". If you're just getting into a band's music or a genre in general, you're seen as a "poser" by "trues" because you likely only/mostly know the most popular songs of that band/genre, and so on and so forth. I'm guessing that could be where part of the hate stems from, since some of the emo kids in the video were wearing Misfits shirts and other punk bands' shirts too. It's frankly silly, but it's something that actually happens with some of those guys.
Also, as mentioned in the video, a lot of people here associate being emo with being gay as plenty of the then kids who were emo here in the 2000s have identified as LGBTQ+ at some point. Plus, emos were known to be more in touch with their feelings, being emotional and crying and etc, all of which tend to be seen as "feminine things" that men are looked down upon or even mocked about it if they do it and, thus, seen as "gay" due to the strongly rooted sexism/misogyny we have in the country. Pair that with the raging homophobia even in more open-minded places like Mexico city, and it really does show more or less where some of the hate towards emos comes from.
It also doesn't help that a lot of punks in Latin America and in Mexico alone tend to align more with conservative views in general, and so you often see some of them making fun of radical stances and gender-defying looks and whatnot (countless times I've seen "boomer" type of posts from them mocking even other punks who are more radical in their appearances, or those who defy gender stereotypes and etc). It's sad.
Mexico *is* in “America”. The other country you are referencing is the “United States of America”. The word America was not coined solely for one country, but for an entire continent or hemisphere.

@@bevs9995 Because that’s what they are. They are Americans from the southern part of America. Hence the name “South” America. US Americans are that and they are also just “Americans”, because they too exist in the continent/hemisphere that was named “America”since the early 1500s, *way before* the first English colonies were founded. US Americans can also be thought of as North Americans, because that distinction also applies to them, as it does to Canadians, Greenlanders, and Mexicans, all also just “American”, continentally or hemispherically speaking.
I know most US Americans think of America/American as terms that only apply to them, and they have persuaded much of the rest of the world to think likewise. But, peoples with historical memory need not abide by such arbitrary appropriations. In Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, French (partially) and German-speaking lands (partially as well), amongst others, this awareness of the true origin and significance of America/American is an established part of the culture.

Correction: That opening shot is NOT a square. It's the central artery of the city--Avenida Paseo de la Reforma--where protests happen a lot. It is NOT a traditional square.
And also where protests don’t happen all the time. It’s a beautiful major Avenue flanked by gorgeous trees and a wide esplanade for walking leisurely and enjoying. It’s separated in sections by several important roundabouts with monuments or fountains. One of these roundabouts has the “angel of independence” a tall column with a golden winged goddess atop , which is why the protests are held there whenever people feel they want to attract attention to their cause.
Very similar to Place de la Bastille in Paris, also the type of roundabout which is a favorite place to make sure the government pays attention to your cause because you’re heavily disrupting traffic.

This video reminds me of a Spanish couple we shared an elevator with in Las Vegas at Cesar’s palace a few years back. They dressed and looked liked they have money. Not sure what they said to each other but they were giggling at my husband and I. Yeah, sure, we aren’t dressed like them but never judge a book by its cover. Time and place for everything, that’s our attitude. How does anyone know that we cannot afford a 10K purse, drive 100K car, or live in a million dollar home or two😉😉😉.
Always tell my kids, always be humble, be kind to others, and count your blessings. Money can be lost in a blink of an eye but people will always remember how you treated them.

Amazing video! I used to live in Mexico City and saw a lot of what you experienced. Being part of many of the urban tribes has probably open our eyes to different worlds within one BIG City.
This is fascinating, revealing, very well made, I absolutely love the host and the subject matter. This is an important sociological record, as educational as it is entertaining. The human race are extremely colourful and creative but that’s not all. We are also violent, destructive, egotistical, self-centred, irrational and crazy sometimes. Watching this re-enforces my own pre-disposition to eschew tribalism and be a lone wolf, a man with no pre-set system of belief, no uniform to identify me as a member of social sub-culture or economic class, free of the prevailing cultural paradigms and beholden to no one. To any realistic, rational, well educated person Catholicism is whack and has an atrocious history. I do like some of the music and architecture, however that has come for Catholicism but all of that does not come close to countering the pain, torture, rape and confusion on the people of South and Central American. The blending and blurring of the more ancient animistic and polytheistic religions with the newer Catholicism is very interesting from a sociological perspective also. The familia aspect is understandable, given the nature of human condition and the fact that many, for one reason or another, do not really have a family nurturing and protecting them. I feel blessed for mine for sure and I suppose a family IS a sort of tribe, some more than others. It’s complicated.
Hailey enriches the fashion show with humanity, cultural awareness, intelligence, and incredible empathy for all human expressions. Bravo!

Hailey is amazing how she meets with so many within the huge population of Mexico City. She can speak with anyone and they all accept her. I live in a Senior citizens building of 131 apartments and they formed a "tribe" here too. They all gather around the front lobby and become informally "members" and hang out there most of the day. It is their way of support and dealing with the greater society they have been segregated from. I see the formation of a tribe as a primal necessity as we are a social being and it is fundamental to the course of human history. I'm not a member but it is interesting to see how they find unity and support and satisfy a basic human need. It's interesting as it happens in Mexico City and Minneapolis, or Tokyo, or Bejing... I see it as a universal to the human condition. Thanks Hailey as you are courageous amazing person communicating with an array of amazing people, opening a vital window on the world.

At the start of the video I thought it was going to be some generic "influencer" video thing, but you went to interesting places, with interesting people and it was very funny, but I was thinking "why does she said the peso is devalued? when right now is one of the strongest currencies in the world" then I saw at the end of the video that it was a production from 2017, that's the difference a good president can do
The think about countercultures, is that they are really all against one enemy in the end- I agree with another commentator, all of these people with so much heart and soul should unite against the upper class (there's WAY MORE of us than there are of them...) and really- I echo that sentiment for almost every country in the world right now. In America, we are struggling too, though certainly a privelaged struggle, but still- to keep food on the table, to keep our apartments or houses, to see a doctor when sick, and I see this in every country where the top few hold ALL the wealth and the divide grows larger. There is NO reason we cannot ALL eat, sleep under a roof, and have enough, there are enough resources if distributed correctly. I work 40 hours a week, and I can't even afford to buy enough food, fix my car or a house.. I rent in combined quarters with multiple generations of family- all in the last 5 years.... I have a feeling that we will all come to a breaking point soon, it's already happening... WORLDWIDE!
There are so many more of us struggling for necessities than those flying around in private jets wasting 100,000 on a couch for their living room in their 3rd house.... forget race, religion, ethnicity, sexuality, those are all personal things that are used against us to keep us apart so we don't realize we are all actually in the SAME boat, so we don't not unite as one against the small percent that hoarde all the resources that could keep us ALL fed, housed, and truly safe and comfortable...
They are under US 👹🇺🇸 payroll.
That was one of the best, excellent work documentary I've seen.
Mexicans have really begun to think for themselves in the last two decades, breaking molds and reforming cultural norms. I'm pleased at the difference there is in today's Mexican youth, I just hope they don't fall away from the traditional family values that made their culture so great as they move away from the chauvinism and polygamy that oppressed them.
What an informative, fun and colorful piece of work, with an excellent host. Need to watch more of her work, she relates to her interviewees as friends.

I just wanna thank you for this. I’m a Mexican born and raised in American. Growing up gay I’ve never felt this closeness with Mexican culture bc of how much they hate us, but seeing this and hearing the stories makes me proud to be Mexican. We come in all different shades of brown and seeing the fashion in the culture was so beautiful!

Yes as a Canadians was shocked same or more expensive than Toronto! CDMX and SMA. Not everything.. healthcare less, half even.. but possible to find less Gringo pricing as well. But as a tourist. Europe seems cheaper!
