      @SlyyderTime What exactly is Andrew doing here?

    • @Bocchi-the-Rock_
      @Bocchi-the-Rock_ Před 2 měsíci +21

      The problem with this is assuming that every content creator wants to make a spectacle. "Raising awareness" will never be a bad thing, as there are always people who just don't know much about the plight of others in the world. To act this way means this video itself would be hypocritical in that it's clearly doing the same exact thing. The way people are trying to turn things like "raising awareness" into a negative is just bad, it's only going to hurt people and make people care LESS, not more. Considering how many people are seeming to celebrate this video, that inherently would be criticizing the entire audience, acting as if this is just the same entertainment as watching a movie or playing a video game, the implication here being those things have no true value in people's minds and hearts (which is also bullshit)
      This sounds like something well-intentioned but ultimately misconceived. As someone who was homeless my first time while I was still a minor, treating these people, both those living in these tunnels and those watching, as if they don't actually care is NOT the way to go, you're just going to piss off those who DO give a shit and end up possibly causing harm in terms of people like this getting help from others
      Who here has been homeless before? If so, do you think "raising awareness" should be treated as a bad thing? Definitely a "The road to hell.." effect that ideas like that will end up having. I genuinely don't understand why people want to feel holier-than-thou, there are SO many people who will "want to help" and then degrade other people around them who are doing the same thing, or can totally "support" a group in question and then insult the efforts of others who are also supporting them, like fucking what lmfao do you even realize how much you could ACTUALLY do if you, uh maybe, worked *together*
      Some people truly care more about the appearance of helping people than really doing it, so to start randomly lashing out at others doing the same makes you seem like you're in the former camp, not the latter

      The problem is he says this but he still does it. Informative as the documentaries are, part of the intrigue is the unfortunate spectacle of tragedy that cannot be avoided to cover the relevant subject matter. It's honestly a pointless virtue signal from Andrew and you can both love Andrews work and think Andrew isn't above the fray in this manner.
      Before you call me wrong, just think about it. He does a lot of documentaries or content pieces about people who are deeply suffering and some of the more fcked up places/situation in America. A lot of cops only see a handful of violent crimes in their career, and most of them spend 30+ years without ever having to fire their weapon. I am just saying this to make those who read realise you can afford to help others more than you think and your help is really not so huge as you picture it in your mind. they're always cast aside by society because they are useless to the big cog wheel that we're all a part of, but like the man near the end said they are all people, they all have a family for the most part and every family has struggled with either addiction or mental illness one way or another, sometimes people just struggle and have no support and they crumble

      There's always something that feels off about these kinds of people though. Like the reason why a lot of homeless people prefer to stay homeless is because the capitalist dystopia they live in has nothing to offer them. Just look at these guys, they're old and if they ever do "recover," they'll end up on the lowest rungs of society, working a miserable job until they die because they don't have a retirement plan. It's hard to say they're saving anyone because they're just reintroducing them to the society that left them for dead on the street and never treated them well in the first place.
      These "care workers" should just leave these people be. If they really wanted to help them, they'd try overthrowing the capitalist oligarchy that forces them to live in sewers because they don't want to be a slave to some capitalist psychopath for the rest of their lives.

It could be fun, but it could be bad depending on your choices ( and if you’re actually in the right mindset for the choice). Despondency will change the way your brain works, trauma changes you, bad luck changes you, fear of the unknown changes you, pile all that on and often it is followed by shutting down, completely broken down. Not knowing how to turn back on the light.
      People want to be ok, nobody wants to look at their problems, the mirror is unforgiving. And often it’s an ugly sight. Sucks, but he's 100% correct and his program is INCREDIBLE. It's the right move for the people who really want out. He's a hero and I'd go to work for him over my state job right this minute honestly. Hate being a part of the system.

    Norway here! Getting IDs is hard here as well, but possible. You can get ID if you have a passport, and passport if you have ID. If you dont have a passport you need a birth certificate or any paper establishing your identity like bills or something from prior workplaces. Since 2013 you can also register for electronic ID which make you able to identify yourself to the government through the web and order ID there. We also dont have crazy waiting times for getting IDs. Since the police are the ones issuing IDs, they're also more helpful to solve the situation.

    In 2015, I lived in a residential suburb of Vegas (Henderson NV). I befriended some Starbucks employees there, and one day during summer, my friend Stephen and I decided to bike the storm drains after he got done with work. They're kind of legendary to residents, and we all know how extensive they really are.
    Anyway, we decide to enter a storm drain at about 9pm, on bicycles, with some water and flashlights and snacks.
    About 30 minutes into our ride, we encountered some teens shooting off roman candles. It looks super cool watching a firework travel into the depths of darkness... lighting it up briefly.
    About an hour in, and we encounter a "desert madman", mindless walking the tunnel. NO flashlight. He was fried out of his mind, and I don't think he noticed us. He was actually pretty scary, and I started getting second thoughts about going further... but the tunnels REALLY do just keep you wanting to explore. So we did.
    About 15 minutes later, we came across a very elaborate "home".. I'm talking TV, Rug, Carpet, Bed, cooking stuff, generator type stuff, shelving for food, all located next to a ladder near a pothole. probably for easy access. Imagine seeing a living room, but in a dark tunnel. Very surreal.
    about 2 hours in, and we could hear darkwave synth music coming from some direction, so we kept trying to find the source.. and it ended up being an underground rave of like ... goths lol. there were probably 10 or 15 people there, all looking like they were in some kind of cult. They DEFINITELY noticed us biking up on them, and I think they were as scared of us as we were to them.
    I think maybe 20 minutes or so after that, we encountered a "grocery store", with LOTS of random stuff for sale. Deodarant, water, snacks, shirts.. but no one was nearby. All Dollar store kind of items. There was a "pay here" box too.
    At about 3 hours in, we ate our snacks, took a break, and decided to turn around. I think we exited the tunnels at about 3am, WAY later than we anticipated..
    I can't even recall how many deeply fascinating things we saw in those tunnels that night.
    Stephen sadly passed away a year later from a motorcycle accident, and I randomly think of that one surreal night we had years ago.. having a real life adventure together. Miss you Stephen!

      That's part of it but remember the end of the video, it's also used as a crutch for many of these people in the tunnel to not make a change. The way the video is put together as well accentuates this. We're lead to believe that once any of these people and Glen can get their IDs that they'll be free of the tunnels. In reality that isn't the case, there are programs that will provide, housing, job assistance, mental health care, addiction treatment and most importantly according to your comment an ID. There are injustices in this world but the difficulty in obtaining an ID is not what's holding Glen and many of these people back. All jokes aside, you make a very good observation. Both Bourdain and Andrew share many of the same core tenets when it comes to engaging with and documenting people and their respective cultures or sub cultures. R.I.P Anthony Bourdain

    This man at shine a light, I’m suprised that as a former addict that he wouldn’t be more understanding or compassionate about how addiction is a disease and not a crime or even really a choice (after the first time) and wouldn’t advocate for helping provide IDs without requiring sobriety. His frustration frankly frustrates me. Andrew identified a concrete measure he could implement to at least potentially improve the quality of life for these folks. Shine a light, please just help them have ids without demanding sobriety. That could be the impetus that allows people like Glenn to reconnect with a family member allowing a ball to get rolling toward your very empty looking facility. Just a thought and thank you Andrew and crew for what you’re doing here. Never knew Vegas could be so heartwarming

    • @jaidalogan
      @jaidalogan Před 24 dny +2

      I see what you’re saying and to an extent I agree. I just think though the problem would be once they get their ids, how will they maintain or hold a job without handling their issues. That might be the downfall of them keeping a job. Reconnecting with family members are an essential to a lot of them however, a lot of times those family members don’t want to deal with them if they are still doing hard drugs. That’s why I understand why sobriety first and being the main focal point is so important. I don’t think his frustration comes without compassion. He’s been through it and has seen it countless of times so that’s naturally frustrating to see people go through similar challenges he went through and now being on the other side of that. He’s compassionate by still being persistent and not giving up hope.

    I love the direction the documentary took after Glenn got his ID. Of course, it was amazing that he got it at all. The focus wasn't all ID, it was also being self-determined to actually stop addiction, and that change was gradual. It kept the doc more grounded in reality rather than it being too "perfect happy ending".
    Phenomenal stuff. For real.

Let alone confronting the things that led that person to addiction in the first place. I hope one day glenn can take that step, for himself and the people who love him. But if not, he had a moment in life where Andrew met him where he was and asked for nothing from him but his story. Glenn knows where help is. Shine a light is doing great work. @@googleuser298 if we guaranteed housing, and treated them like human beings every day until they once again feel human themselves, i think they can be saved. society treats them like less than animals and it becomes very easy to internalize that, its one of the many mental illnesses that just comes with homelessness and an abandonment from greater society.
      i remember when i was homeless i'd cycle between two modes of thinking. if i can be left to fall this far and no one bats an eye, why should i even try to reenter that society? if im broken, its still better than that. on other days i felt like everyone was right, im am not worth existing. and like the guy from the program said, you get used to what you know and these reasonings prevent people from taking action. but both these reasonings can be shattered if we just guaranteed safe basic housing, no requirements, no hoops to jump, no games to play.
