Displaying Our Exploded USS Enterprise D

- Our movie and TV memorabilia museum is expanding! We are now the proud owners of pieces of a 4 foot model of the Enterprise D. This model was blowed up in the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode "Cause and Effect". It was shipped to us in a ton of pieces (it was exploded) and we had to figure out a way to display it. If we didn't do it soon it would be doomed to sit on a shelf somewhere forever as we are all pretty lazy (except Rich and Jay). So Mike and Dick the Birthday Boy spent many a nights discussing how to do this. A plan was made. Since this was a pretty long process, we decided to make a little documentary about it. What else are we gonna do with our time?

I like these episodes where the writers humanise Mike's character.
Its strange to see them acting like normal people
It’s a nice try but it’s way too late. He has done so many horrible things to so many innocent people.
Patton Oswalt will never be the same again
@@NothingIsKnown00I know. The Rich Evans torture arc has been going on for so long now that its hard to redeem Mike at this point.
@@NothingIsKnown00 It just hasn't been the same since the flight logs came out.
Nothing cuter than watching an elderly couple enjoying a shared hobby.

I literally came on to post that exact same thing word-for-word. Damn you.
Every time they make a Star Trek video, I enjoy not only the content but the fact they make Jay film it.
"Isn't that right Jay?" "Yes. I love the star treks"
"Isn't that right Jay?" "Yes, I thought a tiny shelf held up by two anchors in a drywall would be able to store 15 harddrives."
We do plan to expand on this. Possibly adding a frame or a shadow box. Certainly fixing the paint, etc... Trial and hopefully no error.
You guys did the hard part. You might be able to outsource having a shadow box custom made.
I am a professional framer, and I have to let you know you did a great job.
this video was very wholesome, going to show it to my 14 year old daughter and fellow TNG enthusiast when she gets home
Meanwhile in the props storage...
Gremlin: .... ...hello? ☹
If you're looking for ideas... re-create the shape of the whole ship, filling in the blank spaces with clear resin/perspex, then hang it with steel rope wire anchored into the perspex parts, so it can be hung "flying" - it would be like a 3d puzzle with missing pieces, and you'd be able to see both sides of the parts. (hopefully that makes sense)

Didn't look like it ever actually left his hand. Clever edit and sound FX.
That things super neat by the way.
@@willjack1988 I knew the sound was added.. that frame would never make that much clatter 🤣 I assumed he maybe tossed it to a chair or something. Then I went back and screen recorded the video and took it back and forth. And I’m pretty sure he didn’t throw it also.
I laughed so hard on the first watch. He could have frisbee’d it into the wall and I would have clapped 😂

Hi, museum/ art historian here: if you’re concerned with the pegs not being secure enough to hold the back piece of the Enterprise, try cutting a notch into the support pegs where the object will rest, with one side parallel to the end of the peg, and the slope of the notch pointing back towards the object. You can change the depth to suit, but this should help assuage your worries about it falling forward! What you guys did is very similar to how galleries and museums i’ve worked with handle delicate items with weird shapes!
Love seeing you guys preserving these objects, have a great day!
That's fascinating to learn! Thanks for the comment as it's like an extra esoteric geekery comment on top of this extremely geeky video and I am eating it up lol

I had the same idea about cutting a notch into the peg while watching
It's funny how such simple solutions don't occur to us sometimes.
A french cleat would also be a good idea.
Mike has the shattered hull of the Enterprise D on display just as Tomalak boasted he wanted to do in Defector.
I thought of this too. It's a real Romulan move

The fact that Rich Evans even looked at it should be an honor

It's flattering to have it shown in a video, but even more so that they stole the idea from it to make his prized enterprise displayable.
Happy to see these guys are still making Nerd Crew videos.
I'm happier watching Mike and Rich play with their toy than getting a present myself. This must be what it feels like to be a parent.
Hahahaha aaaaaah fuck no. You want to feel like a parent? Add crippling tiredness, high anticipation for your child's reaction to the present you sought long and hard for and then top it off with insane frustration and disappointment when they say "I wanted a blue one."

Something about watching Rich Evans build stuff is surprisingly entertaining
In 1992, the props department at Paramount Studios built a disposable replica of the Enterprise D which was to be used in the demolition shot of that season's 18th episode. The ship was destroyed. The episode was a hit. The crew began working on the next episode. A custodian swept the pieces into a bin, and that was that. Or so we all thought....
I feel like the true purpose of this channel is finally coming out. For Mike to purchase enough star trek props to create his own show.
There's a guy who makes entire episodes of TNG in Blender and fully voices them. I was half expecting it to be Mike when I heard the description.

Do yourself a favour, give it a go. If you don't like it you can always stop but I did off the back of these two talking about it and I really enjoyed it.
Check out a couple of the famous episodes; the show is episodic enough that you're really not missing context by not watching from the start. If you like it, you can always go back (it's just that TNG season 1 is famously awkward and not representative of how good the show gets).
I watch this episode a lot, and I laugh every time I see the explosion; the buzzard pops off, you can see the wires suspending it, you can see that its hollow. The fact that they kept this model is amazing, and the fact that I get to see it now in its present form fills me with so much glee. Thank you.
I can’t believe how strong they built the model to be blown up, it didn’t really explode as much as just violently twirl apart / around on its wires
The exploded USS Enterprise D is about family and that's whats so powerful about it.
True thank you for this. Princess Picard said this and not everyone knows this

My guess with the resin nacelle tips as that they had the molds and thats a fast/cheap way to produce them.
I kinda half expected them to do all that in depth discussion about how to display the model and then have the ending just be them blowing the display up. 😂
Nice display guys, looks great. I recently built a replica of the 4' Enterprise D filming model using casts from the original moulds for The National Film & Sci-fi Museum here in the UK. Getting the hull colours as exact to the original as possible was EXTREMELY tough, it's way more blue and green that it looks on screen!

One addition I would suggest is a sheet of plexiglass or lexan mounted on posts directly above/in front of the model so that it can't be bumped into. This would also make it look more like a museum piece, reflecting the care you have for such an item.
