    Well done Steve ... I’m guessing that the reason that the shorted mosfet didn’t glow brightly was because the psu was tripping off and so not much juice was reaching it ... probably a bench psu on current limit might have been clearer. Still, you managed to pinpoint it which is the important thing. Maybe use something non-conductive as a pointing/prodding tool 😀

    So.. By the looks of your Device Manager, you have an AMD laptop. Because Thunderbolt is designed to work with Intel boards, AMD (unless it has a specific card) won't be able to detect the dock as Thunderbolt, and will (if the dock supports it) fall back to a standard USB-C dock.
    The fact the laptop detects it as a USB dock suggests to me it is working correctly - only way to be sure is to plug it into a Thunderbolt enabled PC or laptop. But I suspect you've fixed it anyway.
    Nice.

    I'm actually surprised that you was able to find the MOSFET with it's own power supply. The flashing LED means it was tripping. This usually means the faulty part doesn't have enough time to heat up because the power supply is detecting a fault and shutting off power. DC variable bench power supplies how ever do not care if there is a fault and keep outputting the power regardless. Giving the faulty component a chance to heat up.

    • @oldguy9051

      @@oldguy9051 They do when they fail short like this did. But it's clear it wasn't getting as hot as it could have, which is likely because of how the overcurrent protection in the power supply was working. It was staying off just long enough to let the short cool a bit before coming back on. It was almost acting like a PID controller.

    I have a similar product made by Targus. The fact your PC recognised at as a hub is good, as it IS a hub for all your laptop peripherals.
    Connect a monitor to it via HDMI, plug a keyboard via USB and a mouse via USB and voila, you have a working dock. I used mine with 2 monitors. I stopped using it because of graphics issues, this maybe due to the fact my laptop is 10 years old and uses an outdated Nvidia chip with Intel onboard graphics, even with all graphics drivers updated, problems persisted that are not problems when laptop is used normally.

      @@minmogrovingstrongandhealthyIt's basically a bunch of ports including monitor connections and power, which plugs in with a single USB-C. This means you can have a full setup on your desk - monitor, keyboard, mouse, network cable, laptop charger - then plug your laptop in with a single cable to both charge the laptop and use all the accessories, turning the laptop into a desktop with a single plug. Going somewhere? Just unplug the laptop and go.
      These are commonly used in businesses with "hot desk" arrangements, where each desk will have monitors, keyboard, mouse and network, but you bring your work-assigned laptop to any available desk, plug it in and start working.

    I'll make a comment about USB-C and Thunderbolt Docks. Cables matter!
    Thunderbolt 3 normally needs to be 19-20 conductors and no more than 24" in length I belive.
    However, most Thunderbolt docks also allow USB-C which only requires 12-14 conductors and up to 48" for PD.
    Just did a lot of docking research and troubleshooting when our university moved to newer models of Dell having Thunderbolt 3/4 and the various docks people purchased and used over 2020 through today at home and work. Most of the Dell Docks limit it to 12-14" for the cable length to avoid communication issues in Thunderbolt 3/4.
    Thunderbolt Standard says 3 meters (10') but I've never had success with users replacing these cables with cheap knock-offs or longer cables and/or extension adapters. Most of my Thunderbolt 3/4 cables are less than 20".

    Thunderbolt typically supports USB connectivity. For example Thunderbolt 3 (which was the first to use the USB-C connector, instead of its own) supports USB 3.1 Gen 2. So yeah, if you plug it into a USB connection, it will still work. You just wont get the benefits of Thunderbolt. But I don't believe this unit is thunderbolt, since it doesn't have the symbol near the port to identify that it is a Thunderbolt port.

    I don't see why it wouldn't have a fallback USB 3.1 mode, as well as being Thunderbolt compatible. Maybe plug a surplus USB Mouse or storage in and see if you get anywhere. Thunderbolt as a whole seems pretty finicky, it has been rebranded as "USB 4" and anyone can add it to their PC. Whether Intel provides working drivers seems to be another matter entirely.
    I've got a Lenovo T480 that worked with an Orico NVMe dock, which I plugged an RX6400 into using a "mining" M.2 to PCIe x4 adaptor. But sadly the Lenovo was using a x2 lane Thunderbolt controller, so it was a bit bottlenecked.

    For a repair like this you need a PCB heater, like a Weller WHP 200 (so some cheap Chinese knock off probably, because the Weller ones are 850 Euros or something stupid). It's stops the heat you put into the area you want to solder from "wicking away" into the ground pour of the PCB.
    I made a delightfully dangerous, Big Clive style, mains powered one, which, for obvious reasons, I won't share, but it's saved my bacon numerous times since I made it. I had put a 96-pin connector on a fairly thick, plated through hole, multilayer PCB (with internal power and ground planes) and, unfortunately, it was the wrong kind: male instead of female. Wouldn't come off again, even with a solder sucker and hot air. Built the hot plate and finally got it off again, 6 to 8 pins at a time... total nightmare. But, later, for SMD components featuring large pads it worked a treat and still does.

      not really, no, the pcb heate heats a big board to make things easier, but it is needed for big chips, that tiny thing was remived and installed no problem
      no traces broken, no need for that

    In theory this should just work with USB 3. You may not get all the features like the HDMI ports. but everything else should just work fine.

    Probably needs to be a thnderbolt compliant usb outlet on the computer to get the thunderbolt. And also a thunderbolt compliant cable. Contraty to other commenterstatements there are amd based systems that support thunderbolt. Like for example ASUS mini pcs but it needs to be compliant all the way down the line. You can have thunderbolt over usb-c but unless the computer has a thunderbolt controller its a no go and usually not all outlets are compliant either.

      The big issue is that having a USB-C connector doesn't guarantee that the USB controller supports all the /potential/ functions that are defined in various versions of the USB 3 standard. Alas, unlike USB 2 (aka 2.0), we got USB 3.0, 3.1 Gen 1, 3.1 Gen 2, 3.2 Gen 1, and 3.2 Gen 2. And worse, USB 3.2 can support multiple "lanes" (think PCIe style).

    It's a USB-C hub. NOT a Thunderbolt hub. Thunderbolt is a protocol that runs OVER USB-C. I think you've confused the two.
    Just plug in any USB-C device and check to see if the hub is working. Simple test.

    I think it's just USB 3.0. If it was Thunderbolt it should have the lightning logo next to the USB-C port. If it doesn't have the lightning bolt, then it's not thunderbolt and it's just regular USB.

    • @jnharton
      @jnharton Před 8 měsíci

      Unfortunately USB 3.x is plagued with all kinds of weird symbols both main and secondary.--- There is a lightning symbol on some laptops' usb 3.x ports that simply signify that power is available even when the laptop is powered off. Also, the presence of a battery symbol sometimes indicates that USB Power Delivery (PD) functionality is present. And that means that the connected devices can negotiate how much power is provided.

    It actually looks like that. That "thing" is mostly used to display a laptop on multiple screens at once either via mirror or extended. It detects it as a USB Root hub since... is a hub.

    • @jnharton
      @jnharton Před 8 měsíci

      If it's a "root hub" that suggests that the dock contains a USB controller that uses thunderbolt as it's connection to the system

    Thunderbolt CAN work with USB C... Even as an IT guy that's hard to answer, though. It depends on the functionality built into that specific device. USB C might work with half the functionality, all of it, or even none of it.
