  • I have had this question asked of me almost more than any other question as a store owner. Especially in the spring when new beekeepers call the shop. The following video is my opinion and my opinion only. It come from 15 year experience in beekeeping.
    DISCLAIMER: I typically only sell 5 NUC's of bees in my shop, except for the occasional package of bees.
    You can purchase 5 frame nucs of bees directly from our website. WE DO NOT SHIP OUR NUCS. Here is a link back to our site where you can purchase:

    When it comes to the production of commercial package bees, here is a video I found of a grower that is an example of what I was speaking about. This will give you an idea of the process

    As new beekeepers we were excited about picking up our nuc on April 10 2020.! This video made the case that purchasing a nuc would be better than purchasing a package of bees so we spent the extra money thinking this would be more advantageous as new beekeepers. After installing our nuc, we did more research because the comb was dark and hard and we saw no queen. We tried to call them and got no answer. we looked again to be sure we didnt overlook the queen. she was nowhere to be found but we did find beetles and hard dark old looking comb! Even the frames looked old and when we called again the woman who answered suggested replacing the queen but after talking to her boss he said that nothing could be done because of our puchase date! We were sold a bad nuc with no queen old comb old frames and a deal with it attitude from the owner! They need to live up to the scriptures they post as so called christians! our nuc was also taken from a separate pallet than the other nucs which had no identification which in retrospect seems suspect! We will never buy from Blythewood bees again especially after being told there's nothing they could do!

    The Blythewood Bees Nuc I bought this spring has substantially outperformed all of the other hives (3 pound packages) in my yard. Great bees!

    Couldn't agree more with your opinion. Nucs all the way! I will say that all nucs are NOT made the same. Some suppliers do a very poor job. So if anyone is going this route make sure you ask questions. I've gained new customers due to people getting nucs that were not up to par. Like poor populations. A good dealer will always have repeat customers.

    Just subscribed. When bringing home a nuc, do you agree with setting the nuc on the bottom board of your hive body and of course opening the entrance of the nuc and letting it sit for 24 or 48 hours before installing it into your hive??? In my case it will be an 8 frame hive.

    When someone buys a five frame nuc and it is full, has two frames of brood and two frames of pollen/honey what is the risk of them swarming right away?

    • @BlythewoodBeeCompany
      @BlythewoodBeeCompany  Před 5 lety +1

      I would not wait to find out. I would go ahead and either put another empty five frame box on top or I would transfer them into a 10 frame equipment. The more room they have the better when it comes to a full box. Thanks for asking the question and thanks for liking our video.

      @@BlythewoodBeeCompany thanks! so when you are making a nuc to sell you are putting two frames of solid bees with all ages of brood and two frames of pollen/honey and one empty frame? that makes a a sellable nuc?

    • @BlythewoodBeeCompany
      @BlythewoodBeeCompany  Před 5 lety

      natserog Typically you’ll have three frames of brood and eggs one frame of honey and pollen and one expansion frame. That’s the typical set up we have. Again, thanks for the question and thanks for checking out our videos

    Answer.... buy from me. But don't some NUC suppliers mismanage their products too?

    • @BlythewoodBeeCompany
      @BlythewoodBeeCompany  Před 4 lety +1

      @Norman Wells, I'm sure every grower has missteps that affect the quality of NUC that goes out. I have had problems with my grower although it is rare. If there is a problem we always take are of the consumer. Thanks for the comment. Our grower has standard operating procedures and fantastic employees that love their jobs and it shows.
