  • Nuc vs Package Bees: Package Inspection - Day 2
Watch as we inspect a newly installed package of bees 2 days later to see if the Queen has been released and if she has started laying eggs.
Nuc vs Package bees is a common debate. Watch as a package and nuc (nucleus hive) are inspected side by side over the course of an entire season to compare the buildup of both. See during each inspection which has built more comb, a bigger honey bee population, and produced more honey.

My bee jacket is a super comfortable 3D ComfortPro jacket which I developed after being disappointed with many different jackets over the years. It is the coolest and most comfortable beekeeping jacket available. If you are in an area where it gets hot, consider investing in this jacket:

So, when your first starting do you not have a super? I see you have the brood box, then a box for sugar water.

Good question! Supers are added once they have become established in the brood chamber and have drawn out most of the frames. Bees like to move up and if given the chance would move up before filling out the brood chamber.

*I thought you had a Nuc and a Package to compare? Great video.*

Yes we are comparing a nuc and package, this is a series where we will be posting each week the next inspection. This was our 2 day check on our package, the previous video linked to at the end was our nuc installation.
In a few days we will be releasing our 12 day inspection for both the nuc and the package being raised in the same bee yard. Thank for watching and I hope you will follow along!

How long do you keep feeding sugar syrup to a package?

    • @BeekeepingUniversity

I would feed until they draw out the deep brood chamber (or two if I was intending to keep them in double deeps). One could also feed while they STARTED building comb in a honey super, but it is very important not to have them storing sugar water in honey supers.

@@BeekeepingUniversity after the first two days, should I stop offering sugar water to a new hive? What is the normal time frame to stop offering sugar water?
