I have been using Slovenian AZ hives that use American Langstroth deep foundation and I love them. They are three chambers high but they open from the back like a doll house so the heaviest thing I have to lift is a single deep frame and I find that because you work it from the back with opening the top bees stay calm. The feeder is located in the back inside the back door and it is much easier to feed bees without creating robbing situation.

I have two flow hives, one apimaye, three horizontal hives, and a four chamber therapeutic horizontal bee bed. My wife says I wasn't taking to retirement very well so I told her I am now a professional hobbyist bee keeper. It keeps me busy and I have a lot to learn.

I built some Layens frames and some swarm traps a couple of years ago and got a small swarm last year. After catching the swarm, I built the hive from the plans of Dr. Leo's website with insulation. The swarm survived the first winter, and the bees are growing strong!
Unfortunately my long lang died out this winter too. The problem was lack of experience building it and running it. They made it till it warmed up and then turned cold again. What I found was that I didnt put enough ventilation in it and when it warmed up the frost melted and the bees got wet, then when it turned cold they died out. Not giving up, going to redesign and try again. It is unfortunate but failure is the road to success, as long as we learn from it. I will let you know what i do to make improvements and I will keep watching what you try and with that and your viewers who run long langs we can come up with success.
About history of movable frames. In 1814, Petro Prokopovych, the founder of commercial beekeeping in the Ukraine, invented the very first beehive frames. But the correct distance between combs -bee space, was described in 1845 by Jan Dzierzon (Poland), he published some books that Langstroth could read. The Langstroth hive was the first successful top-opened hive with movable frames. Langstroth hive was however direct descendant of Dzierzon’s hive designs.

Hey David, I've been building my own Langstroff hives since I started bee keeping. I love wood working, have the tools and a lot of lumber that was given to me. That has been the easy part. Between bad queens, inexperience, and bears, it has been an adventure. Great hive this year,packed full of bees.😊
When I started out in beekeeping, I was using Warre hives. I made them myself.
As far as the bees' wellbeing is concerned, I still think these are some of the best hives, AND the boxes are light, even when they are full of honey.
Traditionally, a Warre hive uses top bars, but I made my own small frames because I found managing top bars very tricky.
I eventually switched to Langstroth hives, because I was getting more demand for my honey, and making a lot of honey with a Warre hive is a major pain...
With no experience with Langstroth, I started in 2020 with Layens hives. I've built 20 hives from 6 frame to 22 frame insulated. I would like to come up with a split frame for those with Langstroth extractors. If you make your hive 3 or 4 inches deeper you can hang 2 Langstroth medium frames from a custom top bar.
im build 2 50 frame long conversion hives to use my deep langs, using a spacer under a normal layens top bar. so i can split my colonies and still run both lang and layens in a horizontal hive.
you forgot the Lazutin frame, hive, which could be very suitable for your climate.
My first hive is a Kenyan top bar hive. My mentor has over 30 years experience and never dealt with my hive type. The whole time he helped me he was guessing a little about things due to the design, you are absolutely right! His primary experience is in Langstroth hives! He has been super helpful BTW
I'm gearing up to build a fully custom one of a kind insulated long-lang Hive. I have a chainsaw mill and I've cut a log into 2" slabs. Planning to plane them down put them together and then also add a thick insulated layer to the outside of that. It will be a beast and hopefully help me overwinter nucs in the cold northern utah weather.
Great video. I use Lazutin hives. Basically just a 15 frame double deep Langstroph. I build mine from 2 by so it's heavy. Plus insulation and unwelcome boards for bear. I sometimes use Langstroph frames bee's just build under them. But need Lazutin frames on each side to prevent cross comb. I even run some as top bars on out edges. My top bars all touch and no bee room above them. No soggy bottom because floor entrances. They were originally meant to drain moisture.

We have a lady that has a couple of horizonal langs, when preparing for winter, she moves her bees into a regular langstroth for that purpose. We are in OK.
My preferred hive is a long langstroth because of my bad back. I build them myself and they hold 30 deep frames. I do use regular 10 frame boxes because I don't have enough of the long hives at the moment. They are easy to inspect because you don't have to unstack the whole hive to look at the brood area, just lift a cover board over the area you want to look at.

Hello David. My husband and I are brand new to beekeeping, we will be getting our bees this May. We love your video's, we are learning so much. When I looked at your video in regards to the Benefits of Bees, you brought attention to your bear, eating honey with your hat on! It was absolutely adorable. I have bears throughout my house and this would be an excellent addition. Can you please tell me where you bought it? Thank you!

Always remember, that even in a traditional Langstroth hive you NEVER have to lift whole boxes.... the most you have to ever lift is one frame at a time. Bring an empty box with you, move one frame at a time to the empty box etc. It does take a bit more time sometimes, but if you are like me, having 2 broken vertebrae in my back, everything is a bit slower :) This is a great tip to help make beekeeping more accessible for all beekeepers, especially those with disabilities or limitations!
in a similar boat, but had my broken verts fused. iv been running long langs and don't have to bend over or lift anything more than a frame above eye level. Im gonna start moving into layens this yr for roughly .3x more area per frame than a standard deep lang frame. so my 50 frame conversion hive would be like having 8 standard lang boxes stacked on top of each other.

We have used 10frame Langstroth hives for several years but my back can't take it any longer. I'm in the process of building a horizontal langstroth, but like you said, i'm worried about movement of the bees in our cold winters. We live near Omaha, Nebraska. I'm wondering, would it be possible to cut a small hole or two in the middle of each frame right before it gets too cold, so that the bees have a "hole" or travel between the frames instead of going around the frames? I'm sure they'll do what bees do and try to close up the holes. But, maybe they'll figure it out that they can easily travel between the frames through the holes? I'd love to hear your thoughts.

I build my own out of 2” foam and aluminum trim coil. All the hives described here or in the comments are now obsolete.
There are pros and cons for every type of hive out there and supporters of them as well. there is one reason though why I recommend beginners start with Langstroth. It is the easies type to find mentors for, it is the easiest to finds supplies and accessories for and the bee space that made it so popular is also used with others. if you learn to manage bees in common equipment then you can build the new hive of your choice when you're ready to change. Most other hives will have to be built. Try to buy something else. you'll see what i mean.
I think you forgot to discuss one key factor that horizontal hive configurations facilitate: INSULATION. The fact that you don't have to unstack them means they can be larger and heavier. That means they can be built with substantial walls and insulation. The layens hives I build have 3" thick foam filled walls. Thicker walls offer better temperature control for the bees, just was they would have inside hollow trees. Definitely a lot better thermal protection than the 3/4" thick langstroth walls.
Why are boxes designed so there is extra bee space between frames for them to make burr comb? Seems it would be better if there was only 1/4 inch between the frames so they wouldn't make burr comb.
Always wanted to have or see a colony of bees in a skep. As I would watch the movies and Disney film growing up about Robinhood and its Medieval Castles, I wondered if they kept them in hollowed out spots high on the walls entrance. Would they push them over as a defensive act to have the skeps fall to the ground and make the bees come out and get under their enemy's armor to sting them. Cruel yes. But you often heard of them pouring hot tar over the wall in front of their castle gates. 🤔 Lol. P.S. They filmed the 1938 movie Robinhood here in Chico, California where I lived and visited the DaDant bee supply store often. And did you know they substituted Sherwood Forest and the large trees in Bidwell Park and creek now that runs thru the middle of town. They housed them at an old red brick historic ranch called Richardson Springs on the outskirts of town. I have been there and have picnicked and swam together with my family. Errol Flynn was the actor who starred it if you remember. :)
I’m a bee keeper hobbyist and I have a top bar and a lang. I use my top bar just for bee swarming and my lang for honey. I know letting swarms go free makes bee keepers cringe, but I produce bees for the bees sake. To date, I have witnessed 30 swarms released to nature. On occasions I will recover a swarm to populate a new lang.

The Layens hives that Dr. Leo Sharashkin sells on his site (he has the build plans as free downloads for making your own horizontal Layens hive) have walls that are 2" thick with wool insulation in them so that the hives stay warm in the winter and cool in the summer. Even Rev. Langsthroth recommended that his hive walls be thick for insulating the hive. People have gotten used to the thin walls of today's Langstroth hives because they're cheaper to buy and move around when you're a commercial beekeeper, who also sees 30%-50% hives dying over winter as part of the business.
This is exactly what I did. I built everything myself. I just bought two bee packages that I'm supposed to pick up on April, so I'll have to experiment on how to make that installation to the Layens hive. I do have a plan/idea though.
Mr Rainmaker here David I came out a winner with those insulated r10 hives with a 40 frame Hive full of bees my other box was brooding up the temperatures at 94.5 and that was in late January and I've been noticing the temperature for the last 3 years because it's plugged into an electrical outlet which I have actual digital readout in LED red which then I monitor the highs in every year for the last 4 years that Hive has been brooding up at the end of January in the middle of febuary by the end of febuary beginning of March they're ready to swarm and I live here in northern Indiana no I've been trying to make a big Hive to go through winter just as an experiment to see if I could pull it off I'm sure enough I did this year was the year I'd like to make a video on it soon I'll show you but nevertheless there's 40 frames in there and the other Hive has 30 frames and their own nest I just wanted to see what they would do I'm experiment and kind of like you okay talk to you later Mr Rainmaker over and out

So unless that mentor was born and died before the 1800s, saying most mentors with many yrs of experience used langs bc the others weren't "invented" yet, is mule muffins.
In the UK we have the curse of the National hive. But, it's what everyone uses, so it's difficult to go to Langstroth.
Paul there is a company called Thorne that sells Langstroth and Layens hives that are worth a look, but they are not cheap though. Another option can be buying a hive from Spain or Portugal where the hives are really cheap.
I started last year really plunge in and bought/built 17 layens hives and 3 langstroff only because finding nucs was nearly impossible for layens plus i wanted to try long langstroff as well. I lost so far this winter 2 layens that i should have made into 1 and 2 langstroff that was very strong going into winter. I like the layens a lot more than the langstroff. I have a couple of vertical boxes i will try this year and see what the difference is in the honey production
