    I have seen packages installed where an inner cover was immediately placed on top and the syrup can placed over the center opening. A medium super was then placed on top and the whole hive covered with the top cover. This provides syrup for the bees for a few days until they can get the queen out and have orientated themselves to their new surroundings.

    a classic install of a package of bees include spraying them down with a little sugar water first so they're not freaking out. You forgot that major part. But, I do like the other options. Thanks for the video

    • @kamonreynolds
      @kamonreynolds  Před 5 lety +3

      I don't think that is a major part. I have always been told if you want to spray something use water on a package and this method is very old. I am sure you can do it that way correctly, but why would I need to?

  • @fezwhy
    @fezwhy Před 5 lety +9

    I have never seen anyone install packages like that before. It looks like just placing the bees there is a little less chaotic and a few less bee stings too.

    Interesting, I wonder if the frantic ones are also not calm on the comb and run around cause their hotter bees.End of April before we get nucs and packages, I gonna pay attention to this,but it's probably just cause been queenless more less .Good video,good way to teach newbies to install a package, thanks for sharing

    Tried your method of install for several pkgs. Worked well for all but 1. Bees ignored queen cage and wouldn't leave pkg box. Fortunately checked next day and shook out bees that wanted to return to pkg box. Suspect 2 queens was the problem. In future think I'll give a good shake of bees over the queen cage before inserting pkg box or install pkg box in a 2d story over queen cage. But is good technique.

    • @kamonreynolds
      @kamonreynolds  Před 3 lety

      Yes the only time they won't cover the queen is if they have another in the package OR the queen in the cage is garbage. We check them all later that night to make sure they get covered by bees.

    My bees will bring resources back into the hive within 1 hour after install, after house cleaning the box and doing the orientation flight. I will do an install when I get the bees, not what time of the day it is.
    I am using a mason jar feeder for about 1 week, depending on flow.

    Seems spraying them with a bit of sugar water would calm them down a bit... before shaking them?

    • @kamonreynolds
      @kamonreynolds  Před 5 lety +1

      Spraying them with sugar water can help but it also can cause bees to suffocate if you spray them and shake them in a heap. I don't worry about them flying around, they are going to do that no matter what you do they will lock in on a queen in a couple days once they start laying and be fine.

    You can keep frame feeder in, but place feeder on one side and shake bees in the other side. There is 3 or 4 frames in between.

    As a new beekeeper, this has been a great series to watch... BUT... as a new beekeeper, I did NOT have drawn out frames and because of that (I think) they swarmed faster/earlier than a hive with drawn out comb. Next time you do a series like this, can you have a new hive without drawn out frames to help new beekeepers know how to care for them to keep them from swarming?

  • @bradfordstringedinstrument8688

    When is the opportune time to use a treatment for hive beetles and mites? Should it be done before the new brood is capped? If so what would you use?

    That was really interesting, cheers for sharing. There is so many ways to go about this, use the ideas and find what suits you best I recon. Many Thanks for sharing your ideas, I'm sure that will help a lot of people out. Out of interest, do you smoke yourself down before the video? I was wondering why you didn't cop at least 1 sting on that last install, there was a lot of bees in the air, and you didn't have the queen in the box,? I know they had nothing to protect, but I would have thought there was a couple of the girls who had a bad couple of days looking for a fight lol!
