    Firstly, I’m from New York City. I was very motivated in gaining work experience before even committing to complete getting my BSW. I have worked hard enough to the point where I now earn 65,000/yr. I earned my Associates in Human Services where I took Social Work 101 classes and it was working for a while. 6 years later and after being stubborn, I’m bored now lol So now I’m working to finish my BA and am thinking about Masters.
    With that being said, everyone’s experience is different. You know what you’re worth first and then the degree should be the icing on the cake. The faster the degree, faster you can compete with higher level opportunities.
    Having an MSW is a great advantage and a worthwhile investment. Thanks for this video!

      Thank you for mentioning your perspective! There really isn’t a black and white answer, and it depends on the role and location as well, as I know NYC salaries will be higher than Michigan, where I am. I am glad you are thriving in the field!

    I work in social services though not as a social worker, I want to pursue my MSW even though my pay and the organization I work for are good! I love my job, but I want to grow and have an impact. It's somewhat scary leaving a stable job, but it's the fact that I want to develop professionally and make a difference that I'm looking forward to.

      I graduated last June with a B.S. in Software Engineering but quickly began to realize that it wasn’t what I wanted to do the rest of my life. Only within the past few months I’ve discovered (macro) social work and likewise felt a string pull towards it. It’s good to hear that I’m not weird for wanting to completely change my career so soon!!

    All of my professors told me to get MSW because there’s more job opportunities and more money. Otherwise I’ll be poor the rest o my life (they didn’t say that but it’s true.) There’s a huge pay gap difference. I live in Massachusetts that’s the way it is here. I am still a little annoyed I have to take a year off just to get experience to apply for the Masters’s program it’s ridiculous.

    • @MindyourSociety
      @MindyourSociety  Před 4 lety +2

      Yes it's a big pay difference here in Michigan as well! Do you have to take a year off? I did not.

    • @Faerieshimmer
      @Faerieshimmer Před 4 lety

      Mind your Society Yeah I was told by the MSW admissions counselor to work for a year (even though I have 4 years of human service experience but it was 6 years ago.) I think she has a good point though because I should make sure I’ll be happy doing social work and working will help determine that. I am a little burnt out from school so it’ll be good for me. I am just worried I’ll get burnt out working during that year. If I am what should I do? Is it inevitable?

    • @MindyourSociety
      @MindyourSociety  Před 4 lety +1

      Faerieshimmer it’s hard to know if you will be burned out now, but I’d say go into it with an open mind and try not to worry prematurely. You never know. You may find that you love it! Or you may find that it’s too easy and not challenging enough. You truly never know until you are in it. But approaching it with an open heart can be helpful

    I have learned that experience is valued and most times over the advanced degree. I work as a Health Educator in a middle school in SA, TX, and have served in the substance abuse prevention field for 5 years. I am currently working on a five-year grant and hoping to earn my MSW shortly after this experience. I applied to earn my MSW this fall, but I am struggling with the idea of leaving my job (well paying and great benefits) to earn an advanced degree. If I knew I would be making what I am making now, the decision would be easier, but finding "good" work is hard!

    • @MindyourSociety
      @MindyourSociety  Před 4 lety +1

      Thanks for tuning in! Yes, everyone's experience is unique. I think it depends on if you think you need an advance degree. I'd be curious to know why you decided to apply for an MSW degree even though you have a well paid and good job right now? Maybe its because you feel your career is good now, but you want more, or something different in the future? In that case, it may be a sacrifice to leave your current job and get a degree now, but pay off in the future.

      @@MindyourSociety I applied for graduate school when I was laid off in August. I also applied for work and did not expect to be making what I am now. What are some social work jobs that don’t have case work? I wanted to originally become an eligibility worker for the state of michigan, but I don’t do well under stress. So, i was looking into philanthropy instead so that way I will still be able to help people and get them the resources i need. I am so lost with social work. Like I want a career that helps people financially and get the resources they need to survive, but I don’t want to deal with like the case work or licensing (I don’t see or understand the point of a license really). I also am interested in sociology as well. Could you help me or give some advice on which path to take. Since we are in quarantine I figured I’ll start trying to research careers so I can go back to school.

      Definitely check out my other videos because I talk about other ways you can do social work, outside of case management ! And that answer depends on many factors; what your strengths are, interests are, goals are, etc. There are more options than just case management though. Program management, fundraising, grant writing, therapy, philanthropy, financial coaching, etc.

      Hello! If you can afford it or get scholarships, then sure why not?! But I don’t personally think it’s worth it to get in a whole bunch of debt to go to a top, Ivy League school for social work. The biggest benefit of a top school are the esteemed connections you can make. But there are other ways to get good connections as well. I am a supporter of public universities.
