That has to be the greatest feeling in poker: flopping the nuts, it holds through the turn and river, and the guy is betting into you, going all-in on the river.
Yeah you're right. I had to do that last night for a $1500 pot. I re-raised pre-flop with AA and flopped a set on AJT board with two diamonds, but the turn brought a flush and the river a straight. The guy check-raised the turn and I called hoping the board would pair on the river. Unfortunately, the river brought the 4th card of a straight. My top set had turned into bluff catcher. The guy insta-shoves the river. I tanked for about 2-3 minutes and then made the call because the guy seemed to be playing little too aggressive for his hand and making moves too aggressively. He didn't turn his hand over instantly and then said that the caller was supposed to turn his hand over first. We all knew that was bullshit, but I turned over the set and he mucked his hand. Then he said I made a terrible call because either a flush or a single card straight would've beaten me. While that might be true, it is also true that he had neither of those hands and that is the main point. I'm still buzzing from that hand this afternoon!

I see many people complaining about his accent, but here is the thing - everybody is different with accents. I had a russian guy in my german classes who spoke german with exactly the same accent. Incredibly heavy. Being good at the language (grammatically correct) doesn't mean automatically you have an ear for the prononciation and vice versa. I on the other hand, speak five languages at different proficiency levels and can imitate german and english (american or british) accent so well, that I have been mistaken by native speakers for a native speaker myself, they find it hard to locate, but they fall for it. If they weren't so many people around that wouldn't come back if he didn't pay him, then this would be true. He paid him just so he wouldn't lose his clients.
They really capture that anticipation you feel that shakes the soul. After a hand like that you are moved like nothing else. They captured it by some form of sorcery, making you miss that moment when you last felt it. That's the magic there.
I love how Damon is literally playing exactly how he mocked the rookies for playing early in the movie. If they act weak, they're strong. If they act strong, they're weak
It's like the battle of wits in the Princess bride. Teddy could go back-and-forth in his head. "He's playing weak, so he must be strong ... but he would know that I would assume he was strong, so he must be weak ... but ..." The key to betting is to not be predictable. Bluff a weak hand the same way that you play a strong one ... then bluff differently ... and also play strong differently ... and so on.
I still love the look on matt's face when he knows the tell. He knows the plays now and it's such a great turn for him to come back around and start cleaning house

I've always figured the cookie ritual is Teddy KGB's standard way to declare confidence in his hand, and the read is that when he's got the nuts he eats the cookie a little different, something subtle like closing his eyes when he bites the first half.
What an incredible feeling to have a straight after the flop, then watch as each card you don't need is flipped, pushing you closer to having an unbeatable hand.
Sometimes it's really hard to tell another poker player's tell. Like when he has a habit of dramatically opening oreos and listening to them break apart while sitting at the table, that's easy to dismiss as just normal, everyday, unrelated stuff.
For movie purposes, the tell has to be painfully obvious so amateurs can get behind it and think they figured it out themselves… If a tell is that obvious, I’d assume it’s bluff aging.
Love this film! Interesting the way he addressed Mike changed from “Don’t you worry son!” to “Pay that man his money”. You gotta respect Teddy. Taking a loss on the chin!
I always found that final scene very interesting. When Damon's character starts to mouth off and Teddy's goons move toward him, Teddy immediately stops them because he knows that if they do that, they might as well shut down the game, because no one will play ever again if it gets out that not only did hey not pay up, but thy had someone beat-up to boot. forget about it. Done.
2 things i love about this scene... 5:54 teddy kgb quickly glancing round room seeing his clientele knowing he cant send his goons after mikey. 2. After referring to mikey as a "kid" all night long and direspecting him, finally says, "pay that Man his money"

Teddy raises big and mike realizes teddy flopped an A-5 straight so he folds and shows his hand to try and get him off his game. In the beginning of the movie teddy eats the Oreo when he beats mikes 9s over aces boat with aces over 9s boat.

The straight was so strong that KGB went through all 5 stages of grief
I love how Damon doesn't even slightly hide his happiness in the last hand but KGB just keeps betting like hes never played before
Best part is that this is a realistic poker hand. Unlike casino royale where everyone had a monster hand
Casino Royale seemed to think they were all playing on PokerStars
lmao It’s so funny in movies where they design a poker game where everybody has incredible hands to raise the tension
this movie so fake. no one folds top two pair.
@@Taigirr the whole point is that he spotted the guy’s tell

Ucan QuoteMe True. Additionally, no one would gamble with him if it was revealed he didn’t pay out winners
Your name is all you have. KGB understanding this. I lost a lot of cash and it makes him mad. But he was beaten fairly. Pay him
If they weren't so many people around that wouldn't come back if he didn't pay him, then this would be true. He paid him just so he wouldn't lose his clients.
@@Dannymiles1987 at the end of the day, he runs a business. It's only when you have debt and can't pay it back, that's when all bets are off.
Can we just all appreciate what an underrated actor Malkovich is?
The accent was a tad ridiculous but he melts into it after a minute or two.
He's underrated?
@@johnsong853 Ikr, this guy doesn't know what he is talking about.
He will be appreciated after 100 years…
Underrated? He literally had a movie named after him 😂
They really capture that anticipation you feel that shakes the soul. After a hand like that you are moved like nothing else. They captured it by some form of sorcery, making you miss that moment when you last felt it. That's the magic there.
“He beat me..straight up. Pay him. Pay that man his money”

@@MightyYoungSir you kinda was to be fair 😂
I love how Damon is literally playing exactly how he mocked the rookies for playing early in the movie. If they act weak, they're strong. If they act strong, they're weak
He knew teddy was tilted. So acting weak was the way to go. Theres levels to it.
thats not necessarily true at all. some chip n change from bluff to the nuts
It's like the battle of wits in the Princess bride. Teddy could go back-and-forth in his head. "He's playing weak, so he must be strong ... but he would know that I would assume he was strong, so he must be weak ... but ..." The key to betting is to not be predictable. Bluff a weak hand the same way that you play a strong one ... then bluff differently ... and also play strong differently ... and so on.
in a casino , in the later rounds, playing strong is easy cause ppl are scared unless they hav the cards. you gotta learn when a bluff is good
The art of war philosophy
I still love the look on matt's face when he knows the tell. He knows the plays now and it's such a great turn for him to come back around and start cleaning house
The actor's in this movie are second to none . Everyone of them brilliant, even the bit actors . Incredible writing , set lighting just a masterpiece and Classic .
The timing of the piano note and Malkovich's facial change is just incredible to watch, every time.

Especially as a crazy Florida man in RED

Gary oldman does it better than malkovich and Nicholson
Fun fact: When Malkovich did the accent on set the first time. Everyone was applauding & cheering him on besides Damon. Who thought it was weird and sounded off. Making a disappointed facial expression unbeknownst to himself.
Malkovich saw Damons reaction and pulled him to the side and whispered "you want to know a secret? Im a terrible actor". 🤣😂🤣😂
Lmao! The genius of Malkovich just winging it.
I watched that scene hundreds of times! ❤❤❤
Literally performs a cookie eating ritual whenever he's got a hand. Can't understand how Mike figured out his tell.
I've always figured the cookie ritual is Teddy KGB's standard way to declare confidence in his hand,
and the read is that when he's got the nuts he eats the cookie a little different, something subtle like closing his eyes when he bites the first half.
I think he did that the first time he lost to Teddy earlier in the movie. @@wasserperson
John Malkovich is one top three favorite Actors of all time. He is so natural. He's believed in every role.
even if its something as ridiculous as this one
Yeah, he was pretty ridiculous in this role. He really over-acted, but it makes the film sooo much more entertaining to watch.
@@jimsty5222 Agreed. He pushed that accent to the max.
KGB...
@@tron1007r yup lol and I loved it :)
Malkovich, Keitel, Daniel Day Lewis, and Vigg Mortensen are in a league of their own
What an incredible feeling to have a straight after the flop, then watch as each card you don't need is flipped, pushing you closer to having an unbeatable hand.
Sometimes it's really hard to tell another poker player's tell. Like when he has a habit of dramatically opening oreos and listening to them break apart while sitting at the table, that's easy to dismiss as just normal, everyday, unrelated stuff.
Lol, judging by the likes, I think this is whooshing over most people's heads :)
For movie purposes, the tell has to be painfully obvious so amateurs can get behind it and think they figured it out themselves… If a tell is that obvious, I’d assume it’s bluff aging.
Every time I lose big in casino or sport betting I come here and watch this scene, this just makes me feel better
Love this film! Interesting the way he addressed Mike changed from “Don’t you worry son!” to “Pay that man his money”. You gotta respect Teddy. Taking a loss on the chin!
"A boss not paying his bills!"- Tony Soprano
I always found that final scene very interesting. When Damon's character starts to mouth off and Teddy's goons move toward him, Teddy immediately stops them because he knows that if they do that, they might as well shut down the game, because no one will play ever again if it gets out that not only did hey not pay up, but thy had someone beat-up to boot. forget about it. Done.
I have always loved watching rounders. Excellent show.
At the start of the final hand, the way Damon says "check"...too good. Like he's saying "don't mess with me on this one."
This is literally how I play poker: check check check all in
You wouldn't happen to be Asian, would you? Because all Asians seem to play that way.
Malkovich's play is brilliant. I would say he is a pearl of that film.
this is such a good scene for so many reasons
A good movie filled with great actors
2 things i love about this scene...
5:54 teddy kgb quickly glancing round room seeing his clientele knowing he cant send his goons after mikey.
2. After referring to mikey as a "kid" all night long and direspecting him, finally says, "pay that Man his money"
He was looking at the goon, not the clients. I don't believe KGB gives a single fuck what those other people think.
@@Johnny-rj9on Maybe he does though. who’s gonna play poker there if he refuses to pay out when he loses? He refuses to pay, he loses his ability to draw other players

How can a movie so classic as this not have a sequel? Has to be in the top 10 movies that never had a sequel that should have, no question!
Because hollywood is obsessed with making shitty second rate superhero movies for zoomers.
because sometimes a movie is good and the story is told..no need for a sequel prequel remake reboot or whatever
Only about 10% of sequels are worth making and don't detract from the original.
That would be really cool seeing him in the world series of poker.
It would be great if the sequel was just an elderly matt Damon playing a slot machine for two hours.

Pokers such a beautiful game. When money is on the line there is nothing that feels better then when you come out on top. Of course to contrast that feeling, you remember the losses and bad beats even more is what’s funny at least in my experience. The wins you remember too, but the bad beats always stuck with me more.
