Do you need to remove plastic + cover or attach direct to plastic

Hi John, not direct to plastic. One lead to the positive the other to the earth.

It might be safer to ask you local Fiat dealer that question. I would have no problem trying it though.

There is a diode, so you cannot withdraw power. You can trickle charge or charge just fine with a tiny loss due to the diode.
