Joel, I have always thought of the name “Bums on a Boat” as being ironic. Anyone who has sailed knows that sailing and maintaining a boat is hard work, never mind a relationship to boot. You and all the characters that have been part of Bums on a Boat have worked hard, both on the camera and behind the scenes. Hang in there and if you are ever looking for a ride on a lake in Ontario, I have a C&C 35 and you are welcome to join me for a sail. And of course, I will continue to watch the channel, no matter what you name it…Cheers!

What is notable to me is how many people volunteered their time and effort to help you through the years. I don't remember their names but the bloke who showed you how to rebuild your engine in Luperon. The family with the retired Police Officer who lent you tools and tons of other assistance. The catamaran you were staying on until you departed. A lot of that comes down to your personality and warmth, lack of ego, and demeanor. None of that is going to change. Please continue the adventure. And thanks for being so open about this experience.

We thought “Bums on a Boat” was an excellent and creative (and yes ironic) title choice, as all of us sailors know the realities of sailing/ cruising life. It also expressed the youthful exuberance we all love, with it’s excitement and pitfalls. Never did we feel you were a bum. You have oodles of charm and personality, and can weave a great story. Sailing life can be extremely challenging, for us all. Congratulations on creating and growing a successful CZcams channel. We are sorry you are going through difficult times.

Despite the tongue-in-cheek name of the channel, I never thought of any of you as true bums. In fact, I have a lot of admiration for what you pulled off. It takes a seismic shift to be able to pull away from the pressures of society’s norms. And you did it! With regards to Michael, my heart does break for you, though, but I know you’ll be fine. Joel. I just wanna tell you how much I appreciate your videos. I’ve been watching you since episode 6. You have inspired me over the last years to chase my dreams. This channel to me has always been about you and your boat. Im sure most of us don’t care where you end up as long as you live long and find your happiness. Thanks to you, old seadog, and Sam Holmes, I have spent the last 3 years chasing my dream of sailing. A 22ft I pulled from vines and weeds rotting away in a backyard. I’ve built her back from scratch pretty much and every time I’ve ever been down or discouraged I end up back on your older videos that make me push myself to finish. I’ve lost someone I loved after 5 years, lost my house, multiple jobs etc so I understand the meaning of being down on your luck. I just hope you know that you have been a huge influence to people all over the world and we all hope you the best. Also if you ever in Weeki Wachee again, I would love to meet up.

I always considered the channel name as a term of endearment. A ‘boat bum’ to me was a well know term for a boat guy that moved in the boating world picking up boat jobs or crew position because of his love for boating. (I wish I’d had the guts to be that guy!)
But I understand the time has come to gybe and find a different course.
Joey and Michal you have helped me find some purpose in my life too so I appreciate that. I look forward to your continuing adventures in whatever directions it takes.

Oh man, I have been making my way down to the Canary Islands in prep for my crossing to Grenada in January so I haven't had much time (or internet) to keep up with my favorite channels. And now this! I really feel for you, Joel. The last two videos have been heartbreaking and, in a strange way, uplifting. I had to read some of the comments to see if my perception was different from most or were most in agreement with me. I see that like most, Bums on a Boat was just the name of the channel. I never saw you as a bum in the literal sense. What I saw was someone with the heart and spirit of an adventurer and lived life like a lot of us would like to try but are afraid to take the leap. I enjoyed living vicariously through your adventures. As your new channel starts to take form and shape, it's my greatest hope that you'll take us along for the full ride. If someone finds their way into your heart, I'd like to get to know that person too. There are so many things that make you who you are and will become. Please share with us the continuation of the journey of your life.

Joel your raw feelings remind me of everyone (including me) who was hit by a train relationship wise. Except we were not in public going through our grief where you do which makes it much harder. To make matters worse this public exposure is your way of earning a living which makes it even more complicated. Your videos show you going through the emotions of coming to terms with something you didn't expect. Anger, frustration, sadness, and then back again like a loop. It takes time to process these things. I am a boat owner like you and you are right. You are NOT a bum and those of us that own a boat know it and have always known it. Don't take the butteflies of sailing as an indication of sailing not being natural to you. I am a 20+ year pilot and still have butterflies from time to time. It is a healthy sign that keeps you alive. Same with sailing. Good luck take it easy !. Give time to time !
