Great job, can't wait to see it all come together!
Great vid and those parts look great. I'm in the process of rebuilding my '80 750k. As of yesterday I I finally got it completely stripped down to the frame which I took to get power coated with some other parts. I had no plans of doing any engine work. It was running pretty good and never had problems. I just wanted to clean it really good and sand and maybe either polish or powder coat the covers. I do a lot of small scale powder coating myself since I don't have a large industrial PC oven. But after seeing this vid I would love for my engine to look like that.
Bang up Job as always Matthew!
Thanks!
I will finally complete some jobs so I can start building my cabinet. I've had the parts sitting around for 6 months now! Results look excited, I'm excited to get going.
love that badass awesome satin peen finish !!! five out five stickers for Matt!
Thanks Ichiban!
Note key pieces of truth that he provides: 1. To get tough gasket material off, you scrape with a sharp blade. 2. Prior to abrasive blast, use solvent to strip off most greasy gunk. 3. To get corrosion and paint off, you use abrasive, cutting media. 4. To get a more polished look AFTER cutting, you can peen it with glass beads. Do not try to cut with glass beads.
what size media do you use for coarse and fine cutting
Just curious, what are you going to coat them with because they will be totally corroded in a week.
That's great for the engine, trans and differential, if it has one of each. But how do you clean the frame and get it looking like new gain?
Drop it off at a powdercoater LOL
Hey Matt I purchased all the videos to the vapor blasted build, how do you feel about a tumbler project to polish the transmission gears like yoshimura does? On a bike build now and would love to have a cost effective way to polish trans gears
I'd look into super finishing companies.
Amazing job! Are you planning to polish any part afterwards to look like chromed? Like the valve cover for example. thanks
Not sure yet. I do have polishing equipment.
@@HTMR thanks! Actually i have a k1 at the same stage as yours. I will keep following your vídeos because you are very acurate in your descriptions. Congradulations
Will you be spraying some sort of clear coat on the engine to help prevent that now virgin aluminum from oxidizing?
ACF-50
So what did you do to clean the inside shell of the case, just pressure wash it? I bought your 750 top and bottom videos, now just trying to figure out the best options for cleaning them inside and out as well as which is the best choice for finishing all the pieces. Should I vapor, soda, or sandblast, ect?
Yeah just solvent wash/pressure wash inside. Soda blast will not remove corrosion and stubborn paint. Dry blast looks terrible. Either vapor blast or have it repainted.
Hi Matt. I'm almost done building the wood VB from your plans. Was this slow going because of the gun or cfm?
Parts had paint and aluminum was corroded. Corrosion is hard to remove.
Do the cases fit well in the cabinet? Did you do them in halves?
I did the halves separate. Tight fit for sure. Got the job done though.
you've got me wanting to tear my 550 apart and build a vapor blaster dude haha
Do it. The before and after is so worth it.
@@HTMR would you say its not worth it if you end up painting it? or maybe the first rough pass would be good prep for the paint?
@@schroederb2007 First "rough pass" would be perfect prep for paint adhesion.
Would it save time to dry blast it to remove corrosion (instead of coarse vapor) and then and then use the vapor blaster to make it shine?
Yes
Best part is... that old turd engine now has a better finish than when the dealer took it out of the crate and rolled it onto the showroom 😋
Bike going to beautiful, hope you put a little hotter cam
This will be a stock rebuild.
could you talk about maintenance on the vapor blaster, how big of a pain is it swapping media? pretty sure i remember you saying yours is closed loop, is media changing quite a bit different between the two?
So long as you have separate reservoirs containing the different media, you can interchange within minutes.
Takes 20-30min to swap media. Closed loop has advantages since any media lost ends up in bins, which can be reclaimed.
What I did was bought 2- 15 gallon blue plastic barrels off Craigslist for $15 a piece and put them on plant pot rollers u can buy at Walmart . I have my sewage pump on a garden hose quick connect so when I change media I disconnect hose pull out pump put in other barrel and roll it back under cabinet. Works great ! And I fill with 10 gallons of water and 25 lbs of Media when it dirty.
@@17Triumph675R Nice! That is one advantage of the pit for sure. I have always planned on doing that, just never followed through.
Hello Matthew, what Power does the Kompressor need to get these results ?
The more the better, watch this video for more info: czcams.com/video/1oFn034YtD0/video.html
I did this with 16-17cfm.
When you vapor blast, do you hit both interior and exterior?
I did a bit of the interior and then realized it does not matter. If I had a larger cabinet, I would of did the interior. These cases were hard to maneuver in the cab.
Thanks for the reply, its just that I’ll take them to a local place (I’m from Mexico) and I dont know if I should tell them anything about doing the inside or if I should protect that with tape or something, is there any type of prep I should be doing apart from degreasing before the vapor blasting? Thanks a lot!
@@enrique7estrada Just disassemble everything, scrape gaskets, and degrease. If you want to pay less, then specify exterior only. Blasters charge by hour.
Thanks a lot for the tips, I appreciate it!
What that originally a Harbor Freight dry cabinet? Sorry, haven't had a chance to go through all the videos
Yes. czcams.com/video/4Jt1SrBTcBA/video.html
Enjoy the beer 😎😎
I will! Thanks so much!
So is vapor blasting just sand blasting??
No, it is wet blasting. Water and media gets shot at part.
So how much would it cost you to build one of those Vapor blasters like you have, the total cost what would you say, thanks
hit the DIY link in the description, he shows you the parts are $550-1800 depending on how you configure it
The parts are the cheap bit, the decent compressor is where the money starts to add up. Expect to pay a minimum of 1K for a compressor, mine was 2.5K.
@@schroederb2007 Couldn't have said it better myself.
@@markwilliams9793 The more air the better. The machine speed is purely dependent on CFM available.
ok now i am confused ... in other videos you have praised the virtues of soda blasting. seeing as this video is new, are you now saying that vapour blasting is superior ? thanks.
I'm still a fan of soda blasting. In fact, I am going to try wet soda blasting in this machine one of these days. There are pros/cons to certain medias. Soda would have done nothing to these parts, to gentle for paint & oxidation removal. I love using soda for carb work because the media will dissolve in hot water.
ok thanks for the reply. i have never used a sand/soda/vapour or any other kind of blaster so i am just trying to figure out where to start. thanks again. i enjoy your videos ... good content good camera work good editing.@@HTMR
@@joef.3094 If you have the room, acquire both dry and wet cabinets.
instead of blow drying your parts , stick them in the oven at 200 degrees
Don't have an oven in garage. I do have a gas grill just outside the door though.
Why stick them in the oven at 200 degrees?
8:40 Thats a terrible business model...
