❤✌ Today's shell adventure - it is mid June and a super chilly morning on the island - 52 degrees and raining! It started raining as soon as we set out for our beach hunt adventure, but a little (or even a lot) of weather never keeps us from the beach! When we arrived it stopped and there were a ton of shells to find. In addition to the amazing shells, we saw some amazing rocks with beautiful patterns and color! **swoon**. Today's favorites scores include a unique orange deep water scallop shell, ginormous surf clams with pure white interiors, nacre filled blue mussels, barnacled covered shells and so much more! Most IMPORTANT thing 1st: All of the really great shells I find in my videos are inside the Parker River Wildlife Refuge. The Refuge is closing 99.9% of the beaches from April 1st 2022 to August 2022 in an effort to protect the Piping Plover nests. Piping Plovers are endangered and the beaches are closed in an effort to help raise the plover population. When the beaches close, there is no beach access. The 1st gate will remain open, but it's not good for shelling. At the very end of the refuge (after gate 7) there are the Bar Head Rocks (featured in this video). Those rocks are located on Sandy Point reservation (which is Ipswich Ma and not part of the Parker River Wildlife Refuge.) That section will remain open! It's VERY good for shelling.
If you want the full Plum Island experience (all 11 miles of beach) - late August, September, October, November and December are great months. The off season is best because during the summer the island is very congested.
The spring is ok, but the weather can be very unpredictable as you can see from watching my videos.
Green Heads: We also have Green head flies that start swarming early July through August. They love the beach and they bite. They are like mosquitos on steroids.
Where to Shell: The Parker River Wildlife Refuge Gates 5 to Bars Head is amazing for shelling.
It's always best to contact the refuge before booking any trips if you are coming specifically for shelling and the beaches. This way you are sure the gate to the lower lots will be open along with the beaches.

Where to stay: There are Air BNB's all over the island, but The Blue Inn is SPECTACULAR. Right on the ocean - I am a huge fan. Newburyport is right over the bridge and it's perfect for New England Charm. Tons of restaurants, Inns and Air BNB's.
Where to Eat: There are several restaurants on the island, to name a few of my favorites: The Beachcomber, The Plum Island Grill, Bob Lobster, Georgie Porgies.
Newburyport: Sea Level is my absolute favorite! As well as The Park Lunch.
Other Activities: Plum Island Kayak, Newburyport Whale Watches, Fishing Charters, Surfing, Sailboat Tours - so much fun!

Hi Jaime! Thanks for the shelling & coffee! I loved the scallop today - gorgeous color! I'm just a tiny bit jealous that it still looks cool up north. We had a couple of cool days but the summer heat & humidity are kicking in now ... which means the only comfortable place is the beach!!
Hi Kim! Happy Coffee and Shells Wednesday! Yes...it has been gorgeous here! That day it was cold - low 50's but a few weeks before it was high 80's! This past week it's been between 50 and 70 - my favorite kind of weather. You know me...the colder the better for the beach. Hot sunny days, the beach is packed with people and no shells. Booooo. But I have been lucky so far! It was a great shelling day today and I agree - my best find was that bright orange deep sea scallop! So lush! See you next week on the beach - BYOC...bring your own coffee 😂

Hello to my friend in Mississippi - I really to love spelling this state out :) Such a fun name! Yes - agreed, blue and purple are my favorite colors, but my favorite find of the day was the orange deep sea scallop. The color was so robust! I hardly find those in the rocks too! Yes...the shells today were packed with colors! My favorite was the denim blue. Also - yes, I can print those up. I have a few 2X on hold right now. Wow, that is a monster shell! You had some great finds, the beautiful horse muscle the denim colored moon snail. The reddish scallop shells. That is an interesting crab with a paddle. the fish bone looked like a pipe. Some really cool things. As climate change warms things up it would be interesting to start documenting the unusual finds, for future reference. Thanks, my feet are toasty warm in my socks and shoes!
Hey Chris! That's a great idea with the documentation. Another crab that showed up on PI that was never this far north is the fiddler crab. They are so cool. Look up a picture when you can. I am always on the hunt for one. I think I need to explore the bay side if the island more for this. They live in the muddy marsh. Yes-so many great finds!! Thanks so much for coming along!!

I am always hoping to find an artifact like that! I have been finding some old smoke pipes which has been fun! They are dredging on the north side of the island so old bottle and things have been popping up! So much fun to find!

Oh Jamie! This video got me so excited waiting for my shipment to get here, I loved all the moons you found. That small one so unique in color. The deep water clam is georgeous. I think I ordered some white but I have never had any so can't wait! I keep wondering what it would be like to shell in rocks. I would probably fall and break a hip or something, lol! Do you sell Sand dollars in your Etsy shop? They are so different from our SC ones. We have 5 hole, key hole and they have the little doves inside. Do yours have doves?
Hi Freda! I am packing up your box of shells tonight and shipping them out tomorrow. I do sell sand dollars, but I don't think I have any listed. If I have one on hand, I will be sure to include it in your box with some extras :) And yes...they do have the doves inside! Did you know that the doves are actually their teeth! :) Crazy right? The rocks can be dangerous, but if you take your time and go slow and always make sure you have a good foot hold, you will be ok. Slow and steady :)

Hi Beth! They are closed for the Plovers. They are nesting right now to August. They were on the endangered species list since the 1980s, but since beaches have made efforts like these, they have been moved to the "threatened" list. The beaches should open back up in August :)

Hi Chris! Not too far at all! When I was in Boothbay Harbor, we found some of those yellow periwinkles - they are so vibrant! I have a small jar full on my windowsill - makes me smile when the sun shines on it. 😍
@@PlumIslandSeaCabin Since I live in Texas when the map shows distance on a map, I assume (lol) that it is farther than it looks. I've not traveled any farther north than Tennessee (my birthplace). So I have no concept of the state sizes up north. Although Rhode Island looks like you could drive it in 20 minutes. LOL
@@chrisbgifford7387 Rhode Island is a abiut 2 hours. I think I might try a beach there this weekend! Everything up here is pretty close. NH is 15 mins, Maine 35 mins, CT 2 hours, RI 2 hours. I get a lot of variety. 😀
