  • If you love the beach, searching for beach treasures, or decorating with coastal decor, I’m looking for YOU!
Let’s talk sea glass today! While you watch me find sea glass on Amelia Island, and take a peek at some of my handmade signs featuring sea glass…let me tell you a little story about sea glass.
I thought it was common knowledge what sea glass is. Yes glass is made from sand, and sometimes it returns to sand in the water. Oceans were often the site of trash dumping and as glass bottles crashed into rocks and were tumbled by the waves, sea glass is formed. Smooth, frosty pieces are often called “cooked” and fresh shiny glass is “uncooked.” Some people call sea glass mermaid tears, or other fun names.
The very first time my best friend came to visit me on Amelia Island, we found sea glass. I mentioned how cool it is that the ocean turns trash into treasure! She looked at me with wide eyes and said I’d ruined sea glass for her because she hadn’t known it was trash!
We laugh about it now, but yes, sea glass is technically trash. While it’s still not advisable to throw any form of trash in the ocean, glass at least turns into something useful and beautiful once it is tumbled. Other forms of trash like plastic and chemicals are toxic.
I hope I didn’t ruin sea glass for you too, and if I did- I’ll gladly take your sea glass off you hands!
Tell me below you knew what seaglass really was and hit that button to follow along in the journey.
