I actually want the Switch 2 to be later rather than sooner specifically to make sure TTYD is given a fair chance to sell well while still being on the current system. The only thing that has my doubts is that we still have heard nothing from Nintendo themselves. We knew about the Switch a year+ in advance due to Nintendo officially saying “hey we’ve got the NX here, it’s coming, more details in 2016”. The fact we haven’t heard anything about any kind of switch successor directly from Nintendo is a bit odd considering, if we are just a year away, they would’ve said something by now. Although, you can make the argument that they don’t want to announce anything official to not hurt the Switch’s still very good sales, they might be gunning for that #1 best selling console of all time, which I think they can get.

Well, considering that Nintendo basically have no competition from Sony and Microsoft thanks to how disastrous the Playstation 5 and XBox Series X news has been lately, Nintendo are now in the position to be able to delay whatever they have on the backburner for the Switch 2.
Also, the Switch originally launched early 2017. What really made the console such a success was its launch lineup and incredibly strong 1st and 3rd party support for the rest of the year, which was maintained throughout most of its lifespan. Launching Switch 2 without something that can rival Breath of the Wild and an incredibly solid release schedule for its first year would be foolish. Especially after Sony and Microsoft botched their console releases and had an extremely poor lineup of games released, either lacking quality or quantity or both.
So yeah, sucks if it's true, but Nintendo have no reason to rush. They already hold all the cards. They just need to not misplay their hand.

I think it is good and probably even intentional to miss the holiday release-window. If the console is a straight successor instead of some "experimental new concept"-console and will launch with at least one really big title like the Odyssey sequel ,Switch 2 will completely sell out immediately with "normal" demand. I doubt Nintendo could even come close to meet the demand of an holiday launch, so why bother? Sell more Switches, sell some big holiday game and launch in the new year like last time. Even if there are other reasons, I think it will benefit both Switch (hopefully getting a great swansong-game) and make the launch easier to handle for Nintendo and consumers who won't have to compete with almost all parents of the country whose kids will put the Switch 2 on top of the wish list.

These surface level 'observations' are laughable 😂
Now, when it comes to multiplat releases, Nintendo definitely has shot themselves in the foot by committing to budget level hardware, but thats again more due to the need for higher power to have version parity between consoles.
Your take is literally saying they should have ditched their rebound success 2-3 years into its life, which is just nonsense

i personally never believed the switch 2 would come out 2024? i doubt it was delayed and to me it never really made sense that it’d be a holiday system, and i dont think it was ever even planned for it either. because even with all of the rumours and everything in mind, does a q1 console launch _really_ mean slower sales overall?
while its a precedent for consoles to release near the holidays, my take is that nintendo sees q1 as better for overall sale numbers (especially after how well it worked out for the switch.) i don’t think there’s enough numbers to make a definitive argument out of that, but at least logistically in my head and from what we saw with the switch, a q1 launch allows for the system to actually build a reputation, library, and just establish itself in general to build up into a bigger and better holiday season. having a bigger library available during the holidays instead of exclusively launch titles just seems like it naturally correlates to more sales. and it just means more people would know of the thing in general, especially parents. idk, im not an analyst or good at business stuff so this could just be a load of nonsense but my perspective this is what I’ve always seen happening

(Haven't finished the video yet) I'll be honest, I think another March or at least March adjacent launch for a Nintendo console would be perfect. Very little to compete with that time of year. It gives a chance for all of the hard core or more dedicated fans to pick up a console right at launch. But it's also not the holiday season, so you don't have a ton of casual consumers buying up the units and making the supply tough to deal with. It feels like a ton of modern consoles lately deal with low supplies right at launch and well into their life cycles. A March launch would mitigate that. The console is launched with relatively little competition, supply issues can be sorted out for half of the year, and then it can be ramped up again for the Holiday season. Plus, then you get to claim all of the games in 2025 as launch "window" games and not just launch title games.

Think of 2017 with Zelda, Splatoon, Mario all on the console when Holiday came around. It also gives time to produce more units to try and prevent too much scarcity by holiday. You also get word of mouth for those releases instead of just trailers which builds in my opinion more trust then just trailers and marketing. The fact that this years lineup for the switch can compete with some of the years the Wii U had either shows how rough of a year it's looking to be for switch or shows how bad the Wii U experience truly was.
Easily the best choice would be remakes/remasters, some like Windwaker and Twilight Princess are easy (since they already were done super well on Wii U) and would print tons of money, so I think it's easy to do, IF the years was/is planned to be a "buffer" year for the Switch as we shifted into the next console next year/at the end of the year. If not, and this possible delay was not foreseen and there were few plans for the switch other than a multiplat release, then they might be in trouble. We still have a pokemon direct, so a new/"new" pokemon game this year IS possible, though with how S/V was/is now, I'm not sure that's entirely a good thing if it is the case. It will still sell well, but I'm not sure it can carry a year alongside a 2 remakes and a new peach game. I could see them relying on partner companies to carry some weight, but the switch is old, so most new games won't be able to be ported unless they're built specifically to work on the platform.
With recent news from Playstation and Xbox (no new franchise games on PS5 & Microsoft's rumored drop from the console space), the beginning of this year is looking grim. Luckily, third party/indie games have made the beginning a bit less bleak, but I'm still a bit worried about what's in store for the rest of this year.
Personally, I'm good for a "break" year, I need to catch up on my backlog (2023 alone added a ton), so no new stuff isn't THAT bad. Just makes the space a bit less "exciting" is all.

  • @WalkerSunriseChannel

Delaying for a stronger launch lineup definitely makes sense. While BotW moved a lot of Switches I'd say that was an exception; generally, consoles don't sell for one "killer app" anymore. I truly believe that launching at the beginning of the year is the best possible way of doing things like how they did with the switch back in 2017 and the reason for that is it creates a possibility/h higher demand and more potential sales when the holiday of that year comes around instead of having a scarce amount of supply during the most busy sales season of the year. So having a console launch around the holidays is a huge mistake in my opinion and I think 2017 proved that for them in the best possible way You don't need to launch a console or a hot commodity during the holidays but it said launch it sooner so that way when the holidays come around you have the supply for it

There is a lot of behind the scenes stuff that needs more than just three months to be properly rolled out. Retailers need to be prepared, game companies outside of Nintendo need to have access to the hardware in order to develop for it, etc. It's about a lot more than just selling the product to the fans, they need to make sure things are ready on the business end to release a console. Back in the 90s Sega effectively shadowdropped the Saturn by pushing it's release forward to around E3 time and it played a big part in that consoles failure, a failure that literally led to them exiting the console making space. Obviously Nintendo is in a more stable place than that but it's still not worth the risk to not show ANYTHING of their new hardware until three months before it's launch

Since I really love this game, if it comes back again someday, I really wish we could get an improved version with more islands to explore, like the cut Game Cube island or the hot spring island, more new stuff like the fast sail (maybe a paraglider working like in BotW, maybe the cut water boots). Being able to customize the sail would be neat too.

Arlo, you do realize the big Holiday title, especially if all of this is true, is going to be Pokemon again, right?
Because we usually get a new Pokemon game every year, unless we get DLC, and we had DLC last year, so it’s obviously going to be Pokemon that saves the holiday and it will be announced on Pokemon Day which already has been confirmed to be getting a Pokemon Presents. So if anything, Pokemon will save the holiday and be the major release, despite whatever type of mainline game it is.

I'm glad they caught on to that bad habit of theirs, even if their system is backwards compatible.

Given the Pokémon presents today and Legends Z-A specifically listing the switch and a broad 2025 (not ‘early’ like Arceus got) it’s possible that we are still significantly further out from the switch successor than anyone has been saying.
It’s not impossible for the next console to come out before the new Legends game, emerald and ultra sun/moon set precedents for Pokémon games releasing a gen behind the current hardware. But one of those was the ‘3rd’ game of it’s set and the others were more of a full priced expansion, so it’s kinda hard to tell despite the company history of being ok launching on newly ‘obsolete’ hardware

I think I said this on here before, but there was NO chance of a 2024 release. They'd never cut the switch pricing (there's always a holiday with a big cut before a console goes away), and their last two consoles did well with a spring release. 2025 was the earliest possible window and I think now the leakers are trying to save face by calling it a delay

I’ve heard that a possible reason for them postponing the launch is the value of yen vs the cost of production with a consideration of what the predicted market conditions are going to be. So they may have postponed it out of a fear that they’ll manufacture at a high conversion point and then have the value of their currency drop before the sales can begin, thus loosing them money.

I'm not a business guy, so probably don't listen to me, but HERE'S HOW I'D HANDLE THIS YEAR if I were Nintendo:
    - Announce Nintendo Selects and put basically every single big game on it, announce others are coming later. Drop the first batch by June at the latest.
    - In the Summer, announce a new console reveal in the Fall, but emphasize that ALL Switch games will work on it and that they'll play better.
    - In the Summer or Fall, drop the price of the base Switch models and maybe make some really good bundles. That joined with Nintendo Selects makes the Switch more desirable. If someone doesn't have that much money, they may be more likely to buy a Switch with a bunch of Nintendo Selects games than wait for a new system next year.
    - In the Fall, do a huge blow-out for the Switch 2 BUT include base-Switch games in the lineup. Any game that doesn't absolutely have to be on the Switch 2 but is impressive enough to get people excited to buy it. They can play it this Winter, but play it enhanced when Switch 2 releases.
It's not perfect, but it keeps the base Switch relevant enough to stand alongside the release process for Switch 2.

  • @dougc84
    @dougc84 Před 2 měsíci +1

The Switch launched with like... 5 games. It was a less-than-stellar release. But what made people buy it was BotW, which ended up becoming game of the year. But, after BotW, the system just kinda sat for a while until more came out.
Backwards compatibility should be a thing. But... backwards compatibility means there's not a lot of reason to upgrade. Unless there's a compelling reason to.
Now, all the games you know and love on the Switch being upscaled over time will probably be a thing, but that will only pull in those that have a real problem with the Switch's current resolution. It still needs to be something that pulls people in. Dread 4 would be an outstanding candidate. Or a new 3D Mario that really stretches what the system does (but hopefully we aren't pushing the Switch 2's APU to the max on day 1 like we did with BotW). Some major 3rd party titles that were never available on the Switch 1, like Elden Ring, would be huge for the Nintendo fans that don't have a gaming PC and don't want extra consoles.
That's the kind of stuff that will sell the Switch 2. I don't see it being as popular as the Switch, but, the more this gets discussed, I think Switch 2 will be a continuation of the Switch. The Switch Pro, if you will. I think the OG Switch will continue to be a thing. Games compatible with one will be compatible with the other. But running on Switch 2 should unlock higher frame rates, resolutions, and maybe even additional graphics options that aren't available on the OG Switch. It makes the Switch 2 a nice upgrade path to someone who's Switch has died or is feeling sluggish, without Nintendo having to reinvent the wheel. They can keep doing what they're doing and succeed.

Sort of unrelated, but I found a vr headset in Animal crossing, and that got me thinking about Nintendo and vr. They always need a hook for thier new systems, and given Switch's success I can see Nintendo wanting to add more than just processing power to the switch2. VR fits that bill almost perfectly, all the cool consoles are doing it, and the joycons are already nearly vr controllers. Adding vr content that only required a headset (as a bundle or sold seperately), could be seen as a big draw for newcomers, fence sitters, and upgraders. One that they would need to meet or exceed the switch's initial success. Not saying it would work, just that it would be a very Nintendo thing to do.

Odyssey2 has had to been a concept since before odyssey was released and been working on at least since release. In my opinion this could be a reaction to palworld from Nintendo. Maybe Nintendo had a big IP Pokémon game (maybe legends: kyruem) and was about to go normal Nintendo mode and release an unfinished game but palworld forced them to take their time and release a full game upon release. Maybe Nintendo has multiple launch titles for the release of switch2

MP4, was announced at the very beginning of the switch lifespan. Imagine buying a switch *for* MP4 with the very reasonable assumption that it would release on it, then waiting lengths of time comparable to Duke Nukem Forever, only to get told that you now have to buy the switch 2 to play it instead. If there's only one or two games I'm playing on the system ever, that's not worth the cost. I'm not spending hundreds of dollars to play a game.

I'm perfectly happy waiting for early 2025 for the Switch 2 in all honestly. There's a ton of games in my backlog that I've yet to get to and a slow year gives me the chance to go through them one by one.
Save the biggest, brightest games for the Switch 2, let that system have all the attention it needs, while the Switch quietly steps into the background.
In my opinion, 2023 was a good finale for the Switch, with Nintendo putting out so many amazing games, even in a year stuffed with genre-defining masterpieces. The fact that the 7-year-old Switch still stood out on its own while the competition was going absolutely insane only cemented its legacy.
2023 was the year the Switch defended its title and 2024 is the epilogue, the quiet before the storm that will be the successor.

In an era of unfinished games and day 1 patches I am in full support of delaying games (or consoles) until they are finished. Yes, it sucks waiting, but it sucks even more paying full price for something that was clearly not finished. A few more months of polish to make the new stuff really shine, or to get the hardware quirks sorted out, can only be a good thing for consumers in the long run. The Switch has had a great run with a fantastic library, surely we can wait a little longer for the new thing to release.

So curreny rumors are stating that in the wake of the cancelation of the March 2024 reveal of the Switch 2, a General or Mini Direct will be in April and the Switch 2 reveal will now be the June Showcase. Another rumor is that Prime 4 is releasing this fall/holiday, meaning it was a crossgen Switch 2 launch title but now it's just the major Switch title for the holidays. BUT that also means that Nintendo ditched it for something they had more confidence is which shows how much they actually value Metroid vs, say, Mario or Zelda. It was already rumored that a 3D Mario was slated for launch, but there are also rumors of an Ocarina of Time Remake as well as 4K remasters of Twilight Princess and Wind Waker. I'm wondering if Ocarina of Time Remake was delayed out of 2024 and they really want their Breath of the Wild moment for launch again and they moved just for that game. Or maybe it was already slated for early 2025 and they decided they couldn't hinge their bets on Metroid, 3D Mario, and third parties for launch.
