      Considering we are in a similar situation it wouldn't be hard to believe they would take a similar path. The DS was extremely popular and is one of the best selling consoles. It was a revolutionary console for having 2 separate screens with one being touch. It ammases a huge library of games and large player base. The next handheld comes along and they just add to the formula with a 3d screen and better performance while also allowing backwards compatibility so all those players have a reason to upgrade.
      However since the switch is the first console in a long time (gamecube for consoles, and the gameboy for portable) to not offer any sort of backwards compatibility, though unlikely due to the continued use of cartridges and is likely to be similar to the switch (with some little gimmick to entice upgrading), they could have started down a road that would lead to the end of backwards compatibility.

    Regarding cartridge usage: a huge problem with any optical media is that it’s incredibly prone to skipping if it’s jostled. CD players solved this in the early 2000s by reading data into memory so that, in the event of a jostle, it can detect and read from the buffer, thus preventing skips. However, in an audio CD, you can do this more easily; after you play the data for seconds 1-3, you’re going to need the data for seconds 4-6, so it’s easy to know what you need to load into memory. It’s a bit more difficult with a video game - the game doesn’t know what data you’re going to be accessing ahead of time, so it’s harder to know what to buffer. Optical media on a portable system may require increased load times to buffer more data, or increased costs for fast internal memory so more data can be buffered throughout / it can be loaded more quickly. Part of the expense of cartridges has been that flash memory prices were incredibly high through late last year due to shortages. As that’s calmed down, it seems likely that Nintendo’s next system will be able to offer larger bucket sizes for cartridges (anticipating an absolute max of 256gb which rarely if ever gets used) at the same if not better prices as the Switch’s lower capacity cartridges.

      To be fair, at this point, the consoles coming out nowadays aren't really revolutionary steps above what came before. The jump from N64 to GameCube, or NES to SNES are more obviously apparent than the difference between what the Wii U and Switch can put out. The hardware isn't really being as much a limit anymore on the types of games one can create.

    I believe there's some confusion about backwards compatibility because some developers talk about it in the same sentence with cross gen compatibility on new games. And sure, a new game available on the old system doesn't provide incentive for the new system to be bought, but that's a different thing. Hopefully Nintendo is smart enough to understand this simple distinction, but I never like things that rely on hoping Nintendo understands something the rest of us see as obvious.

    Nintendo is rumored to be using 3DNAND on the Switch 2 as opposed to the 2DNAND used in Switch cartridges.
    Despite its name and being newer and more advanced technology, 3DNAND is actually cheaper to produce and more effective in terms of storage sizes and read/write transfers.
    It seems like a nobrainer to me that Switch 2 cartridges will be more cost-benefit efficient, have bigger storage sizes and keep costs low (or prevent increases, at least).

      Yep you're correct, it's most likely 3DNAND manufactured by Macronix (which is the current supplier of 2D NAND for Nintendo). Cartridge capacity will go up to 128GB

    The type of games Nintendo publish make it so that raw power isn't necessary, but I do hope it's at least significantly more powerful than the switch, if for any reason, at least so that the developers aren't struggling with development the way that they currently are for the system

    • @Buglin_Burger7878
      @Buglin_Burger7878 Před 9 měsíci

      The devs don't need to push things as far as they are.
      Wind Waker on the Gamecube shows how important a visual style and looking nice can do when working with less. We are pushing graphics too high on all our systems not actually embracing healthy styles.

    • @2intheampm512
      @2intheampm512 Před 9 měsíci

      The Switch-Next is a whole lot more powerful. Uplift over current Switch: 9x CPU performance, 10x GPU performance in handheld and 7x docked to docked, 4x memory bandwidth, 3x memory capacity. I can list the full specs of the SoC if you'd like but it is rather technical, so I hope the performance uplift summary is sufficient :)

    Honestly, backwards compatibility is the highest deciding factor whether or not I buy the next system day 1. I’ve got a bit of a backlog so I’m not in any rush to buy it if it doesn’t have that feature. Bonus points if they actually have free updates for older games to make them run better (looking at you Pokémon scarlet and violet).

      why would u buy a nextgen console just to play the old switich games that u can play now on ur current switch. The reason why anyone would buy a new console is cuz a new game release only for that console. A new Mario game only for the switch 2 would really sell the new system.

    I think a lot of people will buy a switch 2 in order to play their old switch games with better performance so not having any backwards compatibility would be insane.

    • @otozinclus3593
      @otozinclus3593 Před 9 měsíci

      The Switch 2 won't be able to play Switch 1 Games with better performance, that's only something a port can do.
      The Switch 2 will likely solve backwards compatibility by adding 3 or 4 ARM Cortex 57 Cores (the one the Switch 1 used) and play Switch games on these, just like they just added the GBA CPU to the DS and added the DS CPU to the 3DS.
      Switch 1 Games are not programmed to use Switch 2 Hardware, they don't even try to access it. Games made for Switch 1 will perform the same on Switch 2. DS games which lag also lag on the 3DS for the same reason

    Okay so I'm pretty sure the new Nintendo Console will just be like the DS and the 3DS well I don't know if that new console will be much better then the DS and 3DS but I'm okay with it I just don't know what games Nintendo will put in that new console but I'm okay with it and also we love you too Arlo keep making the videos that you make and also we need to talk about the Nintendo Direct for next month because if we're gonna have remastered versions of Triple Deluxe and Planet Robobot and also TomoDachi Life coming to Switch with the new Mii Maker Editor because people just make so many good Miis with that Mii Maker Editor it just looks so cool

    @3:51 If all this is true, then it means that production for the new console is probably already underway and they'll begin accumulating at the beginning of next year. They probably have a day-1/week-1 number of units sold number that they want to hit and so they'll be doing everything they can to ensure they have at least that much in supply by Q4 2024.

    I'm sure the next nintendo console will be backwards compatible because people will be buying the original switch games for years to come so nintendo will still be making a lot of cash no need to worry about the next nintendo console nintendo said we will listen to what the people want I guarantee we will not be disappointed great vid keep up the good work

    A lot of people act like Nintendo will obviously just bring back the "deluxe" model (ports of last-gen games still at premium prices) for Switch, but that ignores the fact that them doing that with the Switch was mainly because the Wii U didn't really let them get full return on investment for most of their big exclusives. Not saying they were justified in how they handled it, I'm just saying that's what probably justified it for THEM.

    Hey Arlo, the Switch Pro wasnt actually cancelled or planned. Insiders passed along info that a new Nvidia Tegra chip was in production, which coincided very well with production of a new dock and model (the OLED dock and SWOLED). The dock specs in particular led to analysts believing that this was a full Switch Pro and not a minor hardware revision as the OLED dock has upgraded display out to support 4K 60 signal output to 4K TVs. So the reporters put all this info together, and not unreasonably speculated that the SWOLED was actually a Switch Pro with an upgraded Tegra chip. It was a case of slightly poor interpretation of the available data than an actual cancellation of the Switch Pro
