Glad you covered this. I'd honestly abandoned the idea of really delving into Unity, but after they backpedaled (and after I tried a bunch of engines) I realized that unity is still the easiest engine to get to grips with for a beginner, of which I am. The sheer amount of learning materials and such are just not there for most engines. That being said, I think the most important point is this:
    from unity FAQ:
The fee will only apply if ALL of the following criteria are met:
Your game is made using a Unity Pro or Unity Enterprise plan.
Your game is created or will be upgraded to the next major Unity version releasing in 2024.
Your game meets BOTH thresholds of $1,000,000 (USD) gross revenue on a trailing 12 month basis AND 1,000,000 lifetime initial engagements.
So the fee not only won't apply to the fast majority of devs even if they are making money, but they have to be making serious money, be on pro, and be on the next major unity version.
Thomas brush made a good point in that Unity is probably the better option, but it's inconsistent in terms of decision making. Hopefully with the leadership changes that will be better going forward.

I've been in your discord for a little bit now :D Andevrs is my handle. I've been playing with the Game Kit Controller asset on unity and made a few videos on it. Seems like a good start for any non-programmers. I was surprised to find anything like that. Also love your tutorials

Fortunately, otherwise it would take a lot of time to learn Unreal 5
