  • Our 2023 TV shootout between the LG G3, Panasonic MZ2000, Samsung S95C & Sony A95L.
All competing TVs were 55 inches in screen size, and were calibrated in SDR and HDR modes to the common standards used within the film and broadcast industry, perceptually matched to a Sony BVM-HX310 dual-layer LCD mastering monitor. Thanks to Mr Maciej Koper who flew in from Poland to help with the calibrations.
All the TVs were masked, so the 13 video professional judges (mostly from TV & film production company Fulwell73) didn't know which TV was which when scoring different picture attributes.
Thanks to Fulwell73 for letting us use their outstanding facility for the shootout. The results neither represent the opinions or views of the company, nor do they constitute the endorsement of any individual TV brand, since the judges didn’t even know which TV was which throughout the voting process.
Thanks to UK electrical retailer Crampton & Moore for supplying the TVs & organising the shootout. If you're interested in purchasing a new TV, even if it's not the LG G3, Panasonic MZ2000, Samsung S95C or Sony A95L, please support this channel by considering buying from Crampton & Moore... call 0113 244 6607 or email david.conner@cramptonandmoore.co.uk
Thanks to HDMI 2.1 cable manufacturer Zeskit for supplying all the HDMI cables used at the shootout. Visit zeskit.com/dis... to get 5% discount (valid until 31 December 2023).

There is one *flaw* although you just say it's a weakness that really can't be overcome without a lot of effort and energy and likely expense. The displays should be randomized for location between tests. I suspect as the shootout went on, bias starts to develop towards certain sets that stayed in a certain spot. Judges develop suspicion of what is what and that can sway perceptions. Again I think you did a tremendous job and am grateful for the results. Well done Vincent!

A possible source of bias, but impractical prob to correct, is that the TVs look to be in the same physical position across tests. So an early positive or negative impression in the test might color the opinions on later clips. Theoretically I think they should be shuffled each time the judges leave the room, and be hopefully sufficiently masked that they coudn't even see which one was which. But that sounds impractical and I'm not sure there even is any observable trend of that kind in these scores anyhow.

You’ve got a "friend" who has the Sony while you have the Samsung, well I have all 3 and I can tell you, even from a layman’s point of view that Sony is the overall best TV. That doesn’t mean that Sony’s cost is justified as no one can make that assessment except an engineer at Sony who partook in manufacturing the tv, is aware of all the cost of the parts and all the work put into making the TV, as well as the TV’s. Yes, Sony is indeed very very expensive and will not be affordable to most but that doesn’t degrading the product.

There’s no way anyone would pick the S95C next to the LG G3 and Sony A95L unless they are in calibrated modes or their eyesight is terrible. Switch to Cinema Mode and the G3 smokes the S95C overbrightening highlights but that’s what you paid for, right?. Otherwise the G3 is almost indistinguishable from the C3 and you wasted all your money…
The A95L wins with its superlative processing, skin tones, and mini contrast even though it’s less bright but the S95C looks out of place side-by-side.
I was at a Costco with 2 S90Cs next to 2 X90Ls (yep, you read it right). I couldn’t believe the X90L’s picture quality. No wonder everyone is recommending it. I expected the S90C to rule supreme but the content favored the X90L with no micro contrast or low light scenes.

Thanks for these shootout results. It's a close match! The one surprise for me is that the Panasonic came in 4th (but as a U.S. resident I needn't feel deprived of purchasing their flagship model). Oddly enough I might opt for the 3rd-place LG G3 - due primarily to price considerations. I'd love to own the Sony A95L, but I'm a retiree on a modest budget and it pains me a little to pay $2500 for a 55" TV. The Samsung S95C is very reasonably priced but I'm a bit worried about the build quality (I've had top-of-the-line Samsung products in the past that didn't last - I admit my personal experience is a "small sample size"). LG OLEDs are affordable and they seem to work reliably for years. I realize other buyers will make choices totally different from mine!

Disappointing to see the low luminance color issues of the A95L. Last year's A95K has the same problems. Sony gotta figure this out since the S95C doesn't have them.
Also, with 3 out 4 TVs supporting DV, it's a shame that you couldn't do a DV category. The A95L seems to have some DV issues as well and these kinds of videos are the best way to motivate the manufacturers to do some fixing.

Hi Vincent, hope this comment is received well. As an owner of an A95L TV I've noticed the desaturation on my unit as well especially when I'm displaying this specific value image - RGB 16,2,2 or #100202 on fullscreen mode. I've probably found a workaround/solution that can be applied. Just go into your Adv. Color temp settings and over there turn the G-Bias to -5 or whichever highest value that you can see where the green subpixels are not wildly active anymore when viewing the above mentioned color image. Now this will produce a red hue so inorder to balance it out just match come as close as possible with your R-Bias to -4 or -5 for a neutral whitepoint. I've observed that after doing the following changes the desaturation is almost gone and you can try and play all the difficult low luminance scenes and find that there is no problem anymore. Changing this setting on all DV, HDR, SDR modes work. What my thinking in doing so was that there were almost 70-50% green subpixels active when viewing low luminance red colour as mentioned above so in theory bias settings are for luminance adjustment which led me to believe turning down G-Bias would help a bit and it really did. Hope you can maybe confirm this as well and what would be the repercussions of doing the above changes since I'm not a pro by any means

I wonder if having a Sony reference monitor skews the results in their favour because they can use the same technologies and processing in both displays making them more similar. I'd like to see if there is a shift in scores if a Flanders or some other high end reference monitor is used.

Hi Vincent, one suggestion for next year: present each TV separately, one at a time, in a random order, for each judge one at a time in a predefined spot. I know this would take a lot more effort, so of course you’ll have to evaluate whether it’s worth it; it would make the test more scientific by removing the bias that could be introduced from a judge discovering which TV is which by comparing obvious signature characteristics such as viewing angle performance, full field white brightness or color saturation. It’s way easier to pinpoint those signature characteristics when the TVs are side by side. And, of course, bias can influence decision even unconsciously, so the more we remove the better.
Finally, another suggestion is to present out of the box settings in a random order (but same content for every TV) and without telling the judges that it’s out of the box settings, so that the scores will be comparable to the calibrated ones.
    Thanks!

It is not Applea to Apple comparison in image quality. But it definitely is feature that you have to think when buying TV… for example it seems that Philips 908 is really good in dolby vision mode, but has errors is other mides that they are fixing for the next firmware uodate!
So it will have impaxt of what mkdes the TV offers and and what modes you use in each TV.
But it is not the Same as what image quality the TV can offer when using similar settings. And that is what this shoot out is all about.

    • @MaaZeus
      @MaaZeus Před 9 měsíci +1

@@kaeji_namitsuaIt isn't trash but people tend to put a bit too much weight on the feature. It really isn't a big deal with current movies and current TV's compared to the good old basic HDR10. In the future, maybe but not now. Dynamic metadata is nice as an idea but unless the movie has some very extreme contrast changes between scenes it doesn't do much. And still when compared side by side the difference is tiny. It is a future technology, when we start to push beyond DCI-P3 colors and brightness way beyond what current consumer TVs can output then it starts to really matter.

@michaelmarcel1894: Dolby Vision tonemaps to the capability of each display (through EDID detection) using Dolby's own "black box" algorithm, so to extract the best Dolby Vision performance from each Dolby Vision-capable TV for comparison purposes, we would have to feed one separate Dolby Vision source (e.g. Apple TV or 4K Blu-ray player) to each Dolby Vision TV, which would have taken too much time and effort. Even streaming Dolby Vision content from each TV's internal TV apps would take ages to set up due to syncing and internet bandwidth issues.

However the G3 price is eye tearing. Out of the box, Samsung shockingly was far ahead of the rest.
