    HI
    I just found this video and wanted to add some details you are missing in your review of the Prius years.
    Gen1 is not for everyone, so you are right on target there. However it is still a dandy car and is built on the old Toyota Echo frame. Tiny. I would not have a issue selling a working car to anyone.Though I would probably just keep it for myself. (I own two Gen1's)
    Gen2 often have headlight issues and are really expensive to fix. However you can just replace the ballast control and save a little. Maybe cost you $600 on the "cheap" to fix.
    More importantly though, the Gen2 center display is notorious for failing and will cost you something like $800 to replace, IF you can find a display. Dont buy a used one though cos it will probably fail soon too.
    Gen3 Prius had a variety of problems you should know about:
    In 2010 many where made with an engine ring defects and so used too much engine oil. (ring blow-by) And so running the engine out of oil if you are not always checking the oil level! Like every week!
    Also Gen3 had water pump issues and those are expensive to replace. Use only Toyota OEM parts for this. Keep away from the cheap knock offs from China or on Ebay. Unless you really want chance ruining your engine.
    Gen3 also still had HID headlight failure issues like Gen2 does. Also the license plate lamps always seemed to burn out too soon. Replace them with LED lamps.
    Gen4. This car is just simply ugly. I would not take one if it was free...Well maybe for free...Have you seen the steering wheel as viewed from the drivers seat? It looks like Optimus Prime wants to have fun with your pants zipper! Also the marker lights on the car's front corners are often getting broken, Expensive to fix.

      Excellent summary. I had not heard about the water pump issues on the gen 3. The piston ring issue is a big one on the 2010 and it also has a tendency to go though a head gasket by 170k miles. To avoid these two issues and the headlight issues, buy a 2013-2015 gen 3.
      My 2013 has just over 100k miles and does not go through any oil between oil changes. No issues at all with the car. I replaced the trans fluid at 90k and the rear shocks at 100k. Will do the plugs and front struts at 120k as well as a coolant exchange.

    • @michael47lamb
      @michael47lamb Před 3 lety +1

      @@mylesgray3470 I would love to own a 2014 but the price tag is still too high for me. FYI head gasket issues are almost always caused by low oil and low coolant too. Also unless you like wasting money in general, you can skip replacing spark plugs in any Prius since they all come with iridium plugs that last damn near forever. I have had the same plugs for 245k miles and they still perform perfectly.
      You could also have safely skipped replacing the trans oil since Toyota has a planetary trans and not a belt driven trans (belted that do need to have the trans fluid changed often) In the Toyota trans there are NO pressure pumps. Nothing to break down oil in general. The fluid in there is simply to keep the gears wet. Lasts forever as a result.
      Why do you think you need front struts? This seems very early for that. Struts go for about 160k miles, if they ever die at all. I have seldom ever needed to change one unless I have been driving on REALLY bad roads. and hitting lots of potholes.

      Mike Lamb Hey Mike, thanks for the info. I’m a mechanical engineer and like to do maintenance to the exact date recommended by Toyota, just to make sure my car is running like new at all times. I was installing the performance sway bar in the back so figured I might as well replace the rear shocks while I was at it and although they were still mostly good, the back end doesn’t rise when I come to a stop now and body roll is much less so they were a bit worn. Im about 2 years away from 120k so plugs and struts so it doesn’t bother me to spend the money to make the ride just a bit better. Most people are not nearly as critical about cars as I am and could easily get by not doing the maintenance till much later without really noticing. The quality of the parts is very high on this car so we have that option!

    • @michael47lamb
      @michael47lamb Před 3 lety

      @@mylesgray3470 I am a lot less fussy about my cars, so I put up with all sorts of small issues before acting on them. It is indeed nice that Toyota has such good engineering in general! Few things need fixed, like in right now. LoL

    I own a 2003 and a 2007, we love them! 200,000 miles on the 03 and the cell is still running strong. Another thing that people don’t know about the cell is that it is a compartment of many small batteries. Most of the time when your cell battery starts to lose power, it’s because only one of the cell batteries is dying. You can pop the lid of the cell, test the individual batteries and replace the one that’s lagging. You can get a replacement on eBay for about $30. Don’t let the cell battery scare you! We are lifetime Prius drivers👍

    I’ve driven a fair share of Prius mostly Gen2 and Gen 3 I’ve also driven a few of the Prius V (also called the Alpha)
    The Prius C has a 1.5L so great fuel mileage
    The Prius V has a 1.8L and is also great for space both front seats and Back seats
    They very high tech till today compared to other vehicles from other manufacturers
    Thinking of getting a Gen 3 or V
    Here in Fiji 🇫🇯 there’s a lot of used hybrids being imported from Japan 🇯🇵 it’s even gone to roads where Toyota didn’t expect them to go and they do save a lot of money 💰
    No regrets with it if you getting it
    Pay attention to maintenance or any warning that the car gives you get it fixed right a way if you don’t then a lot of other problems occur and that’s where the high maintenance cost will kick in
    Thanks for this video even though I’ve driven a lot of them some things you said I didn’t know do thanks especially the issues will do more cross checking before getting one
    Toyota’s hybrid is the best nothing beats it
    Don’t be afraid of them especially the batteries 🔋 hey see Tesla it basically runs on battery only
    I haven’t seen or driven a Gen 1
    But from my experience the Gen 2 got the best mileage I don’t mind that egg shape never did if it saves me money who cares how it looks
    Anyways keep up the great content 👏🏾👏🏾🙌🏾

    I think Toyota just saw the Prius as like a flagship for them. They put their heart and soul into the development of it. The epitome of Toyota, simple, reliable, and fuel efficient. In 2010 they also had a lot of advanced safety features like pre-collision warning, and lane keeping. The sunroof in the gen 3 had solar panels that could run the ac fan to cool it off before you got in.

      So funny you ask. We just bought a gen 3 with the solar tech package. It's the only one with a sunroof. The solar panel powers a fan that vents the car when parked to keep it cooler. You get remote control a/c to run ac for 3 minutes if you are parked outside your house in range when it's hot out so it's not blistering hot when you get in. You also get heads up display (I think, because that's what we have) which projects your speed onto your windshield. All just extras for like $4500 from the factory for the upgrade. Catalytic converters theft isn’t a big up issue with the 2nd and 3rd gen Prius. The 2nd gen is especially targeted but the 3rd gen is underivable without it because the coolant drains out. Cost to replace, $2,000 to $4,000. You can protect your cat with a “cat shield” which is a plat riveted onto the underside. It’s $160, about $300 installed. Good idea if you live in the city and have news reports of Prius cat converter thefts in your area like Seattle and major cities in California do.

    Hi,
    Nice video and great information.
    I would also suggest having any Prius checked out by a Prius mechanic before you buy. That would be money well spent. There are car repair places that specialize in hybrid cars like the Prius.
    I don't own a Prius yet, but I'm leaning toward a 4th Generation 2016 trim level 3 or a 2017 with all the safety features. Also, I'm told the Generation 4 Prius handles better and is quieter. Even though it's consider ugly by some, it's a better engineered car. I have learned a lot on Priuschat.com Also, I talk to Prius owners every chance I get. You can learn a lot from them. Especially the taxi cab drivers.

    How often will the g1 Prius's battery need to be replaced?

    • @thecollegepicker
      @thecollegepicker  Před 5 lety +2

      It's not a definite answer. It depends on all of the things I was talking about in the video. Sometimes the battery is out live the life of the car, sometimes the car outlives life the battery, sometimes you have to rebuild it once, sometimes you get a battery build and have to do it again.I have been driving my generation 1 Prius for about 2 years. I have not changed the battery, it's a 2002. The lady I bought it from said that Toyota took the battery at 60-something thousand-mile gave her her new one so they could study the old one but I don't know if that is 100% true but she really doesn't have a reason to lie about it either. I don't have documentation of that happening. I don't recommend getting a generation 1 unless you are do it yourself.

    Regarding 2nd gen, 2004-2009, Prius. The battery replacement problem has been lowered to a reasonable price. However, after 125K miles/9 years, the brake brake actuator system starts to fail. ( $4000 at STEALERSHIP ) There are rubber gaskets that just wear out. The reasonable fix is a salvage brake actuator from junk yard. You might think bleeding your brakes & fresh fluid will buy more time. Don't just bleed the brakes! There are reports that an old but working brake actuator may die under the stress of a bleed. Just do a "refresh" by turkey baster suction old brake fluid from brake reservoir and pop open a NEW CAN of brake fluid. Do this once a year & you're good. Peace. Source: Prius chat forums.

    I thought of just ONE MORE Prius issue that you need to know about.
    The Mysterious Shaking Steering Wheel. This sometimes happens in older Prius'. Gen1. Also Gen 2 to some degree as well.
    My Gen 1 was the first time I this out found personally. There are a few videos and blogs on it. Here is a link to one youtuber: czcams.com/video/3vLwX8nBL88/video.html
    Do not be confused by his title of SOLVED since his solution was to have the Toyota dealer replace the power steering rack. The warranty period is long over by now anyway
    What is going on with this issue in a Gen1 (Gen 2 is a little different) is the steering wheel shaft has a circuit board around it in the power steering rack and pinion box (under the hood). That circuit board has a couple little springs with electrical contacts that will bounce around in cold weather (less than 30F) when the lube in there is stiff or just gone with age. Thus the computer doesnt know where the wheel position is and so seeks it (ie shaking wheel). This is not normally dangerous if you keep calm and hold the wheel still with your arms until you stop the car and shut it of for a minute. This re sets the steering computer.
    So if this should happen to you, simply control the car to a stop quickly (but do not panic and stop in the travel lanes!) Once you stop the car, turn it off and restart it. The shaking usually goes away until next time. It might be months later too. It is a really random event for sure! If this happens most every week then replace the rack, or sell the car.
    The matter is a factory design defect and there is nothing more you can do unless you want to spend some $3000 on a new power steering rack. Some people claim to have taken the rack apart and tinkered inside but this is a doubtful fix at best.
    FYI, In the Gen2 Prius the circuit board is under the dashboard in front of the driver and steering wheel itself. Take off the dash cover and bang on the computer steering box. I read that his fixes it too. lol

    • @michael47lamb
      @michael47lamb Před rokem

      @@finashone7732 I guess it would depend on how much money you have to spend. Used car prices are really high at this time too. So if you have deep pockets then newer Pruis' are much better than old ones. 2014 and up are really nice, but pricey cars. If you dont have so much spare cash then 2005 to 2009 are really nice assuming you can find any that are not beat to hell by now. Also 2012 and 2013 are decent.
      IN ALL cases avoid 2010 and 2011, they often have bad engines.

  • @michael47lamb
    @michael47lamb Před 4 lety +2

    I forgot to mention a couple things: 1) on some of the Gen2 Prius there was a issue with the MG2 stator burning up. This is the part of the trans that drives the wheels. The problem was due to the design of the trans cooling system not allowing coolant to circulate in one spot on top of the stator. This caused the insulation there to overheat and short out. Result is a dead trans. About $5000 to fix.
    From what I was able to find, the cause of this was owners towing trailers and/or living in very hot hilly areas. Putting lots of stress on the trans. So NEVER tow anything with a Prius is the lesson to learn from this! Always drive a Prius gently if you want it to last a long time without expensive repairs. Never take it off the paved road, or get it stuck in sand, snow or mud and spin the wheels. These will all cause excessive stress in the electrical drive train.
    2) There was also issues with wheel bearings, especially in areas that use a lot of road salt in the winter OR areas near the ocean (salt water again,) The main problem with this is that some (not all) of the bearings had a lack of grease in them and so they started making noise at some point. I took one of my bad bearings apart to see what had happened inside to make all that noise. What I found was that the steel was still in good condition, BUT most of the lube has disappeared and so melted the plastic bearing cage, allowing the ball bearings to rattle against each other. Just plain old poor QC at the factory!
    Salt related corrosion around the bearings mounting makes it hard to replace them too. Otherwise the bearings are not too hard to replace on Gen2 and up but the front bearing on the Gen1 is a major pain to replace, you will NEED a bearing press for sure. I have been there myself!
    A shop will charge you about $400 to replace ONE bearing, the car has 4 of these of course.
