Lets talk about my experience so far with my 2010 Toyota Prius with high miles. Yes, I think everyone should have an old worn out beater prius, and possibly a miata too! Check out the 2010 Prius I picked up. I never thought I would actually own one of these cars, like ever... but its the most sensible car you can own and it is very practical also.

I own a 2008 prius. It has 411,234 miles and has original motor, original hybrid battery! Has had regular oil changes, tires, fluid changes, brake pads etc. And i have replaced water pump once and the regular 12v battery once. Literally EVERYTHING else is all original (ball joints, struts, shocks, bushings, calipers, tie rods, etc etc is ALL original) Dont ever knock a prius, best car I have ever owned.

I never-ever thought I would buy a Prius, but I was looking for a small car to keep the miles off my truck and wanted save money on gas. A local dealer talked me into trying out a 2012 with 130k for the day. It was actually fun to drive and fell in love with it and after some online research I ended up buying it. Most people have no concept about the how reliable and well engineered they really are!

I’ve had my 2012 Prius for three years now and love it too. Couple of tips: B mode is to avoid overcharging the battery when you’re going down a big hill. If you use cruise control down hill the car will switch to engine braking automatically when the battery is full. You can have Toyota disable the annoying reverse beep down to one beep. You might also be able to do that yourself with an obd scanner and the right app. But great review - you got so much right that so many other reviews had missed, hope the car continues to grow on you like it did for me.

Nice job Jake. I got my first Prius about 3 months ago. Its a 2005 and I love it. 46 mpg average over the last 4000+ miles. As others have said. Change the transaxle fluid. Also, if you havent, change you cabin air filter, spark plugs and clean the hybrid battery cooling fan. Those parts will get you a nice increase in MPG.

The 2010 Prius engine had a notorious problem of bad piston rings in the engine which is why the 2010 models burn oil. If you buy any other year you don't have this problem as Toyota fixed it right away for the 2011 models.

Thanks for your video Jake! East coast here, this past Monday traded my '05 Mini Cooper S towards an '11 Prius with only 30k miles. There are a lot of other Prius reviews on CZcams but as an enthusiast for my little sports car, your driving & commentary really helped make things real and put it all in perspective. Actually I was bragging to my coworkers about this Cali car guy who had a Prius DD. My commute is much more relaxing now and I'm saving $110 per month on gasoline...tough to beat. The regenerative braking means I no longer have anxiety about using my brakes to stop. As others have commented, it's a lot peppier than I expected. And though I occasionally end up on the receiving end of people trying to "cut the Prius" off (it's tough to draw the line with that) the car has made me much less of a danger to others on the road.

I have 464000k on my 2010 prius, I have cleaned the EGR all out with a commercial degreaser letting it sit over night in a bag, then pressure washing it out. The PCV valve is now routed to the ground as a PVC dump, dont rout it back to the intake... and only use premium gas it is cleaner and does not gum up (carbon build up) the motor this way.
When removed the spark plugs I made a carbon cleaner using (acetone, transmission fluid and sea foam) about 2 ounces each makeing 6 ounces total and evenly distributed in each cylinder. Next day suck the fluid out. Smoked a bit but will soften the carbon. My prius has no oil consumption whatsoever, totally unreal. Also a 2 inch lift helps a lot with ride quality. Hope this helps. It's my mini truck.

When I get in bumper to bumper traffic or hit a lot of red lights, even though it still takes time out of my day, it doesn't cost me money to sit at those red lights or in high traffic like a regular car that is always running and using gas to go nowhere. Easy and smooth to drive with the CVT. Enjoying it!

Nice video jake,my wife bought a 2010 Prius 4 in 2014 from dealer, lady owned car with 10,000 miles on clock, spot
less brand-new looking, here we are 2021 and only has 48,000.. just replaced the 12 v battery last week, asked the dealer if the old battery was by chance the original one because I saw the tell tale sign of the white marker spot car maker's use to identify original, sure enough,10 years on the battery, nice! $250,. I'm hoping the bigger batteries last 10 more years, we both like the car, same silver like millions on the road 😢,
In chicago driving isn't a joy but a ride on xpress way is definitely fun, very comfortable, so a battery and one brake job is all we did in 6 years ownership, if anyone is thinking about getting one,DO IT!

I have a 2010 Prius as my daily driver, everything you've said about the car pretty accurate. However, it DOES have Bluetooth, i didn't even know Bluetooth existed on this car for like a year since i had it, got pretty lucky one night messing around with the controls. The main difference is mine is the Japanese variant - it came with a touch screen display unit (everything on there was in Japanese) so there might be a difference there but it supports Bluetooth and can save two separate phone profiles at a time also has an auto play function so if my phone was previously connected and I start the car up it would immediately play whatever was last playing on the phone.
Overall a very nice car if you want a little bit of torque but also save up on gas mileage.

I like city driving and the engine turns off itself and it becomes quiet....well..i am starting to like toyota prius now...normal mode is enough for speed. I always use normal mode and eco mode all the time. I never used power mode..I feel like i am on a boat because it is spacious and has so much room for 5 people. U can also throw a mattress in the back if u fold two seats in the back..just tint rear windows and rear shield with 5% tint and maybe use some velco strip with black curtains or blanket at night in the middle of headliner hanging down so that people can't see u sleeping in the back...the beeping kinda annoys me when i reverse haha..but it's okay i am used to it now..

I have a 2013 Prius V (Wagon) and I have 130,000 miles. Based on my experiences of having mine for 2+ years. I’d say it’s been very durable and reliable. It was pre-certified by Toyota when I got it and had a clean Carfax with all the service records. Other than replacing my front and back brakes and rear Caliper, and recently buying new tires plus the normal scheduled maintenance. It’s been very trouble free for me. All the electronics work perfectly fine and the car handles beautifully in the snow. I’ve driven through 6+ inches of snow and pure white out conditions without experiencing any lost traction and without getting stuck. Last winter was brutally cold and it started up every time. I’ve driven on multiple road trips; 7 plus hours of non stop driving (except for refueling/food/bathroom breaks) and it never gave me an issue. I’ve driven the car fully loaded with 5 passengers and a trunk full of everyone’s luggage and everyone was comfortable throughout the ride. Recently I did a 1000 mile road trip and it cost me a total of $34 in gas and I averaged 45 miles per gallon. Another road trip before that was 1300 miles and I averaged 45 miles a gallon and still it only cost me $35 in gas. It was all highway driving for both trips. My old job had me driving 550+ miles a week and I averaged 49 to 50 mpg on a full tank and averaged between 490-500 on a tank. My new work commute is under 300 miles a week and I still average around 47 mpg on a full tank. I do my mpg calculations using the Fuelly app. Overall I have no complaints and it’s a car I really enjoy driving and I often take the scenic route to and from work so I can drive it a little longer. I would really recommend the car for a growing family. Plus it has more interior space than 80% of small SUVs and 50% more space than the standard Prius. I was able to haul a 5 foot tall 44 gallon water heater from Lowes a few months ago and still had extra room to spare. So any home improvement store runs you need to do, big grocery store runs, family road trips, you can't beat the car. Especially since you're driving a car the size of an SUV but with excellent gas mileage.

It has heated, leather seats, auto dimming mirror and everything inside works great! I'm learning to drive it too get better mileage. Although it gets better mileage than the Scion I just had, it's not getting anywhere near what I expected. The batteries were tested and bus bars cleaned bc they were corroded. I know get 58 to 64 mpg in this cold weather, and up to 70 to 84 mpg UK in the summer. I only have to fill the car every month or just over which costs around €47 to 55 at most. That gives me a range of 530 miles - winter and 566 in the summer.

I love my Prius 2010, just replaced the brakes, tires, struts. Oil leak fixed. Big battery was replaced under warranty. Head lamps buffed out. Inverter serviced, transmission and radiator flushed. Cabin air filter replaced, spark plugs replaced, alignment done. Still have to do shocks, engine filter, air conditioning refresh. Windows tinted. Leather seats will need attention and I love having the sunroof. Getting ready for a long long drive. Two drawbacks if you run out of gas... car computer system will need to be reset, filling up with gas will not work... and you’ll have to be towed. If you overfill the tank, it messes up the gas regulator and the miles of gas left on display, could be incorrect and you could run out of gas! Always keep rank near half full. All work completed... next is the body... fender, under covers

2010 is probably the highest risk year of Prius since the gen 1 (pre 2004). There was a piston ring problem on many of them (1st year of gen 3), that was solved by the second year of gen3. Plenty of them will be fine but it is a higher risk than the years immediately after or before.
I owned a gen 2 Prius that I let go around 270k when the engine was burning oil pretty badly and it needed wheel bearings replaced (costly labor because of where they are located on a Prius. I am looking to get a gen 3 or gen 2 used.

a bit late on this one, but I agree with everything you said. I would add that this CVT is NOTHING like the CVT found in Nissans that tend to break constantly. there is no belt drive like other CVTs. I've seen a few videos on here that kind of help me understand how it works. It's basically a traditional auto trans with the electric motor creating the continuously variable effect. Finally, sitting at stoplights with no engine vibration/noise is an absolute delight I had never even thought about.

You got a right and perfect car ever made by Toyota. This car can last forever if maintain it properly. This car is built for driving everyday so as long as you keep using it, it will last. Actually, you had a JBL Sound System in this car. you can see the JBL Logo on the speaker GRILL. MY CAR IS 2011 Prius 4 with Solar Roof and had it for 8 years now with 152,000 miles on it. No single issue beside scratches on paints and pumper. the front bumper cover and rear were easy to remove. I had replace my front headlamp cover due to yellow color built on it. I got a pair of aftermarket on ebay for only $97 ea and install it and made my car look like new again. This car is easy to maintenance and replace plastic parts around the car. Look on ebay for parts. Enjoy the Great car my friend.

@@desilifeinamerica2880 I don't buy cars with rebuilt titles personally. I would look for one in the second gen if you want a low priced one, the third gen gets slightly better epa mileage.
200k miles is not too bad but there are some caveats, First try to get a second gen as new as possible, the batteries tend to average about 14 years of life if driven regularly. the second gen has a problem with it's speedometer display, the part is actually called the combo meter or combination meter, there is a chip that will fail on the board and the car will get wonky, it will not turn off or the display will not display correctly, it is a cheap and easy fix, you can find people on ebay that you can send in the board and get it fixed for pretty cheap. czcams.com/video/pb19p8zYeTg/video.html also, at 200k and up you may have to eventually replace the front wheel bearings, the job is not too difficult if you attempt it yourself, there is a tutorial on youtube that will walk you through the steps without having to pull the CV axles.
      czcams.com/video/swQX6opo-8Q/video.html
There is only one other problem that I can think of that you need to look out for, the headlights, if you buy a model with the HID electronic headlights there is a chance down the line one could fail, and they are not cheap, but, there are aftermarket kits out there that are cheap alternative that you can fix it with. so it is not as big a deal as it used to be.
These are generally the main issues you COULD have with a second gen Prius, you may have none of these problems as well.
There will be people on here or elsewhere that will warn you about the MFD or touch screen going bad but, there are so many of these cars that have been sold over the years that grabbing a replacement from a salvage yard should be pretty cheap.
I hope this helps you, I also hope that it doesn't scare you into not getting one, the Prius tends to be bullet proof, and reliability is through the roof.

If you look carefully in the owner's manual, you will see that Toyota recommends changing fluid every 60.000 miles if you drive in lots of city traffic or in high temperature climates. I change mine every 30,000 miles, which is what most Toyota mechanics do on their personal cars.
