The big question everyone wants the answer to is how long batteries last on BEV’s, and the cost/viability of replacing them. This hybrid has had the battery replaced under warranty but presumably the battery here is smaller/cheaper? So would a BEV battery also only last around the same 178,000 miles as this, and would all the manufacturers go bust if they all replaced the batteries under warranty? And where would you, the dealer, have been if the battery needed replacing when out of warranty? All subjects for future episodes? Was the £4,400 bill for just suspension work or did that include the battery? Not clear in the vid...

Good point on the keeping older cars running. As I get older and contemplate the rampant pillaging of the earth for resources, it’s heartening to see older things (like cars) being kept going. It’s a weird satisfaction but satisfaction nonetheless. Good one for putting the time and effort to keep these cars on the road Matt. You could easily take the easy option of scrapping or passing them on as an easy trade sale.

Cheap to buy, cheap to run, hybrid battery almost new (I was given the invoice from Toyota) and takes you from A to B smoothly, silently and in total relax. Not all drivers want to race. There is a reason why this is the default Uber taxi, they are truly one of the most reliable and economical cars ever made. The only thing that stopped me owning one is that these are the main target for catalytic converter thieves, and the scum bags are everywhere in London. I don't know what this situation is like right now, but there was a time when they were being stolen at such a rate, the waiting list to get a new CAT from Toyota was something crazy like 6 months, and all the time you are waiting, the car is not roadworthy.

As a person who moved into this country the first thing I was recommended was "go get a Japanese car, they won't fail you" As this video shows
My first car here is Toyota Corolla 2006 petrol with 115k mileage, 100% working serves me well with the AC so strong it got me cold in the heatwave days in 2021. After a bit of settling, I switched to an 89K mileage Nissan Note 2014 because of loads of option extra and cruise control needed.
This little Note is just the same as what I always drive in Japan, whether in the hot weather like Okinawa, or the gigantic city in Tokyo to the snow mountain of Nagano, or in this country from London to Plymouth, and Broadstairs back to London, they were never let me down, all function with a green tick.
They maybe lack of drivability to their counterpart in Europe, but the reliability of them is always trustworthy.

Toyota have the VIN numbers on all the pannels and doors if you ever suspect they have been in a bump. Looks very clean. At 200k miles it's definitely got 100k more left in it. Common issues on these are the EGR valves and head gaskets. But supply and fit centers will fit replacement low milage engines for £1000 so usually the way to go if the HG ever pops. Ideal tools to do a Job.

I had an Auris hybrid as a company car and at first I thought it was boring but that's not what it's about. It's dependable and once you've settled into that not much feedback thing it was like driving around in my favourite armchair, and after a stressful day sometimes thats exactly what you need. I had another Toyota that had proper textured carpet in the headlining and headlight protectors for the headlights like another set of headlights that went over the top which was odd, these old folks homes on wheels I have a bit of a soft spot for. There's a lot to be said for just wafting along.

I stupidly part exchanged it for a Ford Kuga as I wanted a bigger car for myself and the family...it's not been a bad car at all, but the running costs and build quality of the Prius was sorely missed....along with the keyless entry 😉

Still driving my 2003 Prius, it is just reaching 200,000 miles and is pretty much as good for mileage as it was the day we got it. Still prefers long runs in hot weather, doesn’t like cold starts and short journeys. We’ve been expecting to need to replace it for the last couple of years, but it just keeps. on. going! Plenty of dings, knocks, scrapes and dents on the outside though.
