  • Many have been wondering why my DC40 didn't perform well in the big mess test.
In this video I check it thoroughly if there is any leaks in the airpath and then test the suction & airflow.

Good video there - did you check the rubber seal all round the flexible floorhead soleplate, which often gets very clogged with dirt, as it moves in and out and can accumulate dirt. If that rubber gets a hole in it, or a split, it will leak suction. I did notice that strange noise again when you tested the hose on the back of the machine, and covered the pipe up, suggesting there was a leak in the hose, which is maybe why the result from the hose was very low at just 1/10. I will have to do a big mess test with my Dyson Light Ball I think, but I dont have a deep pile rug like you do, so its hard to compare results, and my machine, although similar to the DC40, has a completely different design of power head. Maybe it simply looks like Dysons do not do so well on long pile rugs, but they do better on shorter pile carpet, like most people have in the UK, as I dont think shag pile is very popular here like it was in the 1970s.

I checked the rubber seal in the soleplate and it is in a good condition. Yes the hose definitely has a leak and it can be heard in the video. I am not too bothered about it, because I very rarely use upright hose. New mkII cleaning head won't fit to this model. It might improve the pick up performance slightly, but I think it's not worth it even if it would fit. It might be that this model DC40 isn't the best for medium to high pile carpets. Lets see what future tests will show.

The floor head on the MK1 looks different to our MK2 head, the brushroll looks like the main difference plus the suction selector switch on the mk2. Heads are interchangeable though i believe. Why don't you do a test to test the cyclone efficiency like pick quite a lot of fine particles up with it? like sugar or flour.

This mkI head is indeed different from the mkII head. MkII head is (what I have seen) slightly better. I would like to try the mkII head, but apparently it doesn't fit to this older DC40.
eBay sellers selling the mkII head say this in their listings.
It would be interesting to see how well this cyclone system separates flour. Probably much better than any other bagless vacuum what I have.

You are struggling with every other Dyson owner.... “Whoa! Wait. It sucks?”
    Yes.
